Despite racing into a 2-0 lead and including both Jonjo Shelvey and Rolando Aarons in their starting XI, Newcastle's second string were forced to settle for a share of the points at SJP on Monday.

Shelvey almost opened the scoring on seven minutes when he saw Canaries goalkeeper Aston Oxborough off his line, but placed his lofted shot just wide.

An opening goal wasn't long in coming though, Shelvey's ball into the box taken by on Callum Roberts, who set up Luke Charman for a routine finish at the Leazes End.

A second goal followed within two minutes, Dan Barlaser and Macaulay Gillesphey taking the parts of Matt Ritchie and Jamaal Lascelles - the midfielder sending over a corner for the defender to head in.

At that point it looked to be a question of how many Newcastle would score against a City side who had shipped four goals at Boro a couple of weeks before.

However the visitors survived and should have halved their arrears after half an hour, when striker Pierre Fonkeu headed over from close range.

City did make a game of it within five minutes of the restart, when Devonte Aransibia exchanged passes in the box before firing beyond Freddie Woodman.

Magpies defender Kyle Cameron then looked a certain scorer just before the hour when in front of goal with the ball at his feet, only for Oxborough to block.

Shelvey played the full game and his efforts to inspire United ended with him playing as an extra forward - Aarons having gone off after an insipid 45 minutes (by the way, his namesake Max in Norwich's side is a cousin).

The prospect of a Norwich equaliser began to loom as Newcastle ran out of steam and a soft penalty award after 83 minutes when Josef Yarney blocked Kieron Higgs gave the visitors their chance.

Adam Phillips duly tucked his spot kick past Woodman setting up an increasingly frantic finale during which Roberts ballooned an effort over from Shelvey's ball.

Peter Beardsley's side looked to have got off the hook and clinched the win deep into added time when Charman pushed into the City area. However he shot across goal and saw his effort whizz past the far post, with the unmarked Shelvey pleading for a pass.
