"It took them a wonder goal for all the possession they had. We produced a bit of magic ourselves too, but of course we had to defend and I think the players were magnificent in their work.

"They’ve got a good attitude. We’ve got that horrible one in us - we can be inconsistent. 

"Today, they were manful in their work - they had to run a million miles against a quality team. I was delighted with their attitude.

"I think the whole crowd, with (Miguel) Almiron, they sense it as much as he does. When he gets in front of goal they’re willing it in for him. Last January, Almiron lifted this club... he was terrific. I inherited him in the summer and he’s a great lad.

"Almiron was outstanding. And (Alain) Saint-Maximin - the way we play is difficult for them because we’re 50, 60 yards away from goal when they pick it up. I'm delighted for Miggy. He's got an assist - great goal from Jetro. 

"We've seen three quality goals and we've got two of them, so it was lovely to watch.

"We go up and down too easily, especially away from home. We have to improve. Consistency is what we're striving for. We have to keep working at it and keep plodding away.

On Jonjo Shelvey:

"We put him back in for West Ham and he scored and made one and he did very, very well (and) played very, very well against Bournemouth.

"We played at a good level. It was not easy because they defended deep. We scored two goals but we also let two in which is disappointing.

"With substitutions sometimes players forget positions. We found a way to get through but unfortunately at the end we conceded a goal. There are teams that defend deeper like this, it happens all season.

On Newcastle's safety-first tactics:

"It’s what we've lived the last four years. We found a way and today, we found it again. but unfortunately, at the end, we conceded a goal. 

"There are teams who play higher or deeper - not all teams play the same way. We play the same way as last season. The way we played today was at that level. 

"We could not score all the chances we had; they scored the two chances they had. Sometimes it happens. The score at 1-2 in the last minutes, we conceded free kick we could have avoided. The quality from (Jonjo) Shelvey made a difference.

"We played well, and (Martin) Dubravka made good saves. We arrived in front of the ball many times, unfortunately, we could not score. Last season, we played badly. We played poorer than today.
