Former Magpie defender Owen Bailey lined up against his old side after signing a permanent contract with the Tynesiders. That follows a trial appearance last week in a friendly against Hartlepool United.

A Gateshead side led by old boy Mike Williamson and stacked with other former Magpies deservedly beat Newcastle's current second string at the International Stadium on Saturday.

One of those, Adam Campbell, fired the Tynesiders ahead after 12 minutes, before former SJP reserve midfielder Greg Olley made it 2-0 before the half hour, defender Charlie Wiggett succeeding only in helping it over the line.

The visitors struggled to get back into the game before the interval, United striker Dylan Stephenson seeing a 40th minute effort disallowed for offside.

Rather than swapping the entire side as they had a week earlier at Darlington, the Magpies made just two half time changes - one of whom made an almost instant impact.

It took Stan Flaherty just three minutes to make a surging forward run before finding Stephenson, whose left foot effort skidded under the 'Heed goalkeeper to give him his third goal in as many pre-season games.

Gateshead regained their two goal lead almost immediately however; former NUFC trialist Cedwyn Scott racing on to a through ball before shooting home.

A steady stream of United replacements followed, but it was home substitute Paul Blackett who was next to net, doing so with his first touch on 64 minutes after Campbell played him in.

That was to be the final goal of the game but a demoralised Newcastle side could have ended up on the end of a heavier defeat, had the home side taken the subsequent chances that came their way.

A trio of players who appeared for the first team at Burton the previous day - messrs Allan, Young and White - all started here, meaning that Gateshead's billing of the visiting team as a Newcastle XI was technically accurate - although this was always a Magpies U23 game with Chris Hogg in charge.

Many thanks to GW.
