70 mins Erik Pieters carried the ball forward through central midfield and threaded a pass to his right between Jamaal Lascelles and Kelland Watts, picking out the run of Jay Rodriguez into the area.

With Watts appealing in vain for offside, the Clarets striker finished with a low first-time sidefoot from 12 yards out in front of the Jimmy McIlroy Stand.

We Said

Steve Bruce:

"It’ll be decent for Jonjo (Shelvey), he’s had a really tough time with it, you know, getting injured before we even started. It was cruel for him, he has to make it up somewhere. So he’s on the way to recovery.

"Well, Almiron will now start with the group, which is good, so he’s back, then, of course, we have got the illness to Allan Saint-Maximin, which we hope by the weekend will be OK.

“Yes we’ve got a few missing, (but) the ones who played, good for them.

"It’s unfortunate (for Paul Dummett). He’s nicked a calf at Doncaster the other night, which is a shame, as he’s had a really good three weeks. But we’ve been unfortunate in that department."

They Said

Sean Dyche said:

Fair play to Steve and Newcastle, a
lot of the sides know each other now. The analysis on each team is so deep but it’s still one thing that doesn’t normally happen – apart from in tournaments abroad – where teams from the Premier League play each other.

"But Brucey wanted the game, we wanted the game and he was happy to do that. Both sides had mixtures (of players), them slightly more than us due to their deeper squad.

"But I think everyone went about it in the right way. It was a competitive game. I think there was a reality to it, which is important, and it was tight – as Premier League games can be.

"We are juggling the game time. We want to make sure we can get to a point where everyone has had enough football and, equally, everybody is fit and well.

"The mentality has been really good and that’s important going forwards. I asked today about the squad mentality because we made a few changes and I thought it was clear to see.

"Everyone’s on board and everyone is working very hard. Everyone knows what we want to do and how we want to achieve it and the way we play and I think there was a good sign of that today.

"I thought we delivered a good performance. A lot of our play was productive, so we were pleased with that, and we had a really good shape defensively, which is always important to us.”

(Officially listed as "trialist", the 60th minute substitute for Burnley was identified as former Claret and free agent, Aaron Lennon.)

Waffle

Steve Bruce's side were beaten 0-1 at fellow Premier League side Burnley in an unadvertised, behind closed doors kickabout on Tuesday afternoon.

A 70th minute effort from Jay Rodriguez was the difference between the two sides; Newcastle's best opportunity a header from Joelinton before the break that struck the goal frame after a cross came in from the right.

The 21 players used during Friday's win at Burton Albion all featured again, while there was also a first appearance of pre-season for Jonjo Shelvey, after recovering from a calf problem.

Development squad trio Joe White, Jack Young and Tom Allan all got further pitch time, as did Kelland Watts.

Missing were Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow, Paul Dummett, Miguel Almiron, Javier Manquillo, Allan-Saint Maximin and Callum Wilson - the latter spotted training at Darsley Park at the same time as this game was in progress.
