Season 2021-22
Wolves (a) Premier League

Saturday 2nd October 2021, 3pm

Conditions: Dismal

Programme: £3.50

2 - 1

20mins Question marks over the positioning of Darlow, as Jimenez was able to gallop forward through midfield and release Hwan, who placed his low effort into the gap created by the goalkeeper at his far post. 0-1

41mins Saint-Maximin fed Joelinton on the left side of the box and he shot against the approaching Sa, who stayed down after smothering the strike. The ball pinged around before falling to Jeff Hendrick, who rattled it home from just outside the box in front of the South Bank, beyond Sa who by now was back on his feet. Had he stayed down the effort may have been ruled out. 1-1

Unbelievable, Jeff: Hendrick celebrates his howitzer

Half time: Wolves 1 Newcastle 1

58mins Wolves won it with a similar strike to their opening goal; Jimenez advancing through central midfield and releasing Hwang to dash into the area before beating Darlow with a low effort from the left of the goal. 1-2

Full time:
Wolves 2 Newcastle 1

We Said

Steve Bruce said:

"There was nothing in it either way.

"I didn't think we deserved to get beaten....but I have said that too many times. It is another one that has crept away from us.

"We will have a look at the game, I didn't think we deserved to get beaten but I have said that too many times. We'll go to work again and hopefully we can get some of our injured players back.

"We are in the Premier League, we are one of four
(sides) who haven't had the win. We are still searching for it.

"It's been so close but I keep saying the same thing, I didn't think we deserved to lose.
Overall we gave as good as what we got and unfortunately, we have come away and…I feel like a long playing record.

"It is the story of our season so far, it could have been our day but unfortunately it wasn’t.

“It is not easy but the experience I have had over the last nine hundred and odd times, whatever it is, helps you - but it still disappoints and upsets you. The first thing I look at is could we have done anything any better, could I have been better in the week.

"I look at myself straight away and think could I do better? So we will keep bashing away."

They Said

Belittled....and Lage

Setubal-born Bruno Lage said:

"That's the dynamic we want to create. When you look at our goals, it's not just about Raul and Hwang, we want to see how they start. We are happy with that, that's our way to play.

"When you find that space in-between the lines, you have to have those kind of players that can receive the ball and the other guys to attack the space. That's the dynamic we want.

"It's very hard to defend it. Newcastle also did this very well, they blocked our defensive line and found the spaces in-between the lines.

"That was the plan, to try to push and open more of the spaces. It was very good because we worked all week on that situation. It brings more confidence as the players start to believe more in our work.

The first 45 minutes was very good on our part, we controlled all the game.

"Since the first minute we had that feeling that we were going to win that game. From the way we are playing, the way we are training all week and after we started the game with support from our fans.

"It was a good feeling for the 90 minutes and we created a lot of chances. We looked at Newcastle and how they tried to play against us with the line of four and then the line of five.

"I think we found, every time, the right spaces to go. When you look back at the way we scored the two goals, it's a good feeling for our side.

"I think we did a good performance. Today we had more time on the ball and played with big confidence to manage the ball, playing against a team who, when they start losing, begin to press but we had the confidence to continue with the ball.

"After the goal they scored we came to the second half in the same way, to not be afraid to have the ball, especially if we need to go back to our goalkeeper – we will create our chances.

"The players did that very well and we created the best chances to win the game."

On Hendrick's goal:

"I think our goalkeeper spent too much time on the floor for the game to continue. The game continued and we had the ball in our possession. We lost the ball and they shot on our goal without our goalkeeper.

"It was too much time and we can see what happened with Jose (Sa). It was a challenge on the floor and you never know what happens."

Seven PL games in and Newcastle remain winless with three points from a possible 21. Had their games ended at half time, they'd now have 9 points and be sitting twelfth.

This was the seventh time that these two sides have met on this ground in the Premier League and the first time United have been beaten, winning once and registering 1-1 draws in the other five.

Before today, United last lost at Molineux in the top flight in November 1977; a 0-1 defeat during a Division One season that would end in relegation.

Jeff Hendrick is only the third Newcastle player to appear as a first half substitute and find the net before the interval.

Gary Speed accomplished that feat at Coventry City in September 1998, with Nolberto Solano emulating him two months later at home to Wimbledon.

This was Hendrick's third goal in our colours, all of which have come away from SJP in the Premier League. Netting on his club debut at West Ham in September 2020, he then struck again at Leeds United last December.

Another fruitless day for the Magpies in the home shirt/white socks combo.

A Spanish double - Federico Fernandez played the second half wearing a "19 Manquillo" shirt, as did Manquillo. Note the home fan wearing a Mexican wrestling mask - although Kendo Nagasaki did come from just up the road...

Steve Bruce is still one short of his 1,000th game as a manager but after making it seven Premier League games without a win on Saturday, 999 should see him calling the emergency services.

His side were comfortably beaten at Molineux by a Wolves team who scored their first home goals of the season - a brace from Hee Chan Hwang giving Bruno Lage's side back to back victories following their Saints success.

A Newcastle side who had mustered 20 meaningful efforts at Watford a week earlier were able only to conjure up a pile driver from substitute Jeff Hendrick that got them back level before the break.

Minutes before that unexpected equaliser Wolves should have gone 2-0 up but Trincao somehow hit the bar when presented with an almost open goal and it looked like United had prospered from that miss.

Hwang had shot Wanderers into the lead on 20 minutes when Raul Jimenez played in the South Korean forward; Karl Darlow rushing off his line and giving Hwang ample opportunity to steer the ball home.

Allan Saint-Maximin had the chance to put his side ahead in the 51st minute and seemed a certain scorer but his shot was straight at goalkeeper Jose Sa, who blocked from point blank range.

That miss proved costly when Jimenez again fed Hwang and he was able to easily tuck the ball past Darlow again from the left side of the box.

There seemed little chance of a second equaliser as forward efforts got ever more frantic and less effective, Jacob Murphy failing to shoot or pass when well-placed and nothing falling to fellow replacement Dwight Gayle.

The game, like a number of players, limped to its inevitable conclusion, leaving the Magpies next to bottom with just three points out of 21.

Joe Willock was also added our list of casualties, struggling with a side strain for some time before eventually bowing to the inevitable and coming off on 36 minutes.

His departure saw United revert to a back five; Hayden going into the defence as Hendrick entered the fray, to what could be described as a cool reception from the travelling contingent.

Within six minutes though the jeers had become cheers, as he was in the right place at the right time to thump home an effort from outside the box after Joelinton's challenge on Jose Sa had left the 'keeper stranded.

But that was a rare moment of unexpected joy when our shortcomings were painfully evident: defensively sloppy, unimaginative in midfield and overly-reliant on ASM up front.

Back at the venue when he made his Magpies debut in 2019, it's difficult to recall a single contribution Miguel Almiron made today, while Joelinton was rather more involved but with zero end product.

The next transfer window is still 13 games away and it's by no means certain that the panic buying of some previous seasons will be replicated - Bruce failing to convince the powers-that-be barely two months ago that the holes in his squad were an issue.

Only the return of Callum Wilson gives his manager or the long-suffering fans any glimmer of hope during the international break before the visit of Spurs.

Increasing pressure from the stands on Bruce doesn't look to be replicated within the club though, apparently content to be "ticking over" presumably hoping that circumstances allowing for a successful sale arise.

For ticking over though, read misfiring badly - with the pervading gloom in the away section echoed by grim weather in the Black Country on Saturday.
