We said

Elliott Dickman said:

"I thought first half we were good  - we've been working a lot on on distances as units - back four, midfield and staying connected and I thought first half we did that quite well.

"We scored two good goals and I'm really pleased with that aspect but we gave a goal away right on half-time, the timing wasn't great but there were plenty of positives first-half and we should've gone in 2-1 up.

"When you make silly mistakes it costs you.

"There's no other game platform for our team to play against a team like this. It's a great opportunity to play against senior sides and it's a great opportunity to come to grounds like this.

"It's a great opportunity to develop within that but we've got to make sure we do things right. As much as we're pleased with a lot of the first-half, in the second-half we were back to being a little casual and sloppy.

"We've given four really poor goals away and we've got to stop that. We've got to work really, really hard together.

"Regardless of whether we're playing Mansfield or an U23s side. The basics of defending, that we're tight and compact and hard to play against is really important.

About Joe White:

"I thought he was good. I thought his free-kick was excellent, he was unlucky with that. He showed little glimpses of some really good quality but we probably need to try and get him in the game a lot more."

Nigel Clough said:

"It was very enjoyable, whether there’s anything in it or not it was nice to put a good performance in and score some goals.

"We could have had double figures tonight.

"The attitude of players not involved in the starting 11 on Saturday and the performance of James Gale was very encouraging. He’s improving each week and each training session: he doesn’t look out of place in the first team.

"He made a goal, possibly the most important goal after he made a tackle in the left-wing position so I’m very pleased with him.

"I think getting his
(Johnson’s) goal against Tranmere a couple of weeks ago was good for him.

"We thought we’d give him an hour so he stays sharp,
(we thought we’d) let him get himself a goal and he’s got three!

"One of the things that pleased me tonight was that after he got his second goal, he got played half clear but played a magnificent reverse pass through to Tyrese Sinclair. That shows the quality he has and the unselfishness.

"It was great to get Ryan Stirk out on the pitch
(after his recent injury).

"Will Forrester as well, it was the first time we’ve seen him
(in the first team).
"I think that all three did very well tonight."

Stats

Newcastle's only previous competitive away game against Mansfield's senior side came in the League Cup in August 1992 - ending in a scoreless draw.

The reserve XIs of the two sides also met at Field Mill in the Central League, United winning 3-0 there in October 1987 and going one better with a 4-0 success in March 1995.

Northern Group H was settled at Hillsborough when Sheffield Wednesday beat Harrogate Town 4-0 to confirm top spot - although both teams qualified for the knockout round of 32. Mansfield finished third, Newcastle bottom.

Newcastle U21s concluded their Papa John's Trophy group stage ties on Tuesday with a tenth successive defeat in the competition, but played their part in what was an eventful and entertaining evening at Field Mill.

With neither side able to qualify for the knockout stage, just five minutes were on the clock when United's Dylan Stephenson received a perfect threaded pass from Lucas De Bolle and calmly finished across the 'keeper.

The League Two hosts levelled in the 16th minute when ex-Boro junior Danny Johnson was left unmarked to volleyed in a left wing cross from James Gale.

Joe White restored United's lead after 23 minutes, jinking into the box and beating two opponents before his side-footed effort was helped into the net via a deflection.

The Stags equalised again in the second minute of first half added time; John-Joe O'Toole firing past Dan Langley. 33 year-old O'Toole was the only player retained from Saturday's 1-0 FA Cup victory at the mackems.

The hosts went ahead for the first time in the tie on 53 minutes, Johnson ramming a fine left foot strike into the top corner of the net.

Visiting midfielder Joe White came close to snatching his second of the game soon after, seeing his free kick strike the Town crossbar.

Mansfield's Johnson then followed suit with an effort that rebounded off both posts, Langley then impeding him at the cost of a penalty kick that Johnson converted to complete his hat-trick on 70 minutes.

United's night then got worse when Tyrese Sinclair advanced into the box in the 77th minute and tumbled under challenge from Langley at the cost of another penalty. With Johnson substituted, Sinclair stepped up to send Langley the wrong way for 2-5.

The visitors struck again in the closing seconds, Stephenson breaking down the right and crossing low for 17 year-old substitute Michael Ndiweni to knock home.

Nigel Clough's side had the final word in the second minute of added time however; Langley parrying Sinclair's shot and Nathan Caine
tapping in to make it 3-6.

Many thanks to GW
