Elliott Dickman's Magpies are now unbeaten in their last seven league and cup outings and currently sit second in PL Cup Group G. The top two clubs in each of the eight groups qualify for the last 16.

Friday night saw Newcastle U23s notch up their sixth successive victory - seeing off their Birmingham City counterparts for the third time this season.

A scoreless opening 45 minutes at the Liberty Way home of Nuneaton Borough saw the hosts shade it and call visiting goalkeeper Will Brown into action three times.

A rare excursion by Newcastle into the City box just before the interval had ended with Joe White going to ground - but rather than award a penalty, the replacement match referee booked the visiting player.

The Magpies made their first change of the night midway through the second half; Tom Allan coming off the bench for his first outing since returning from loan at Morton.

And within ten minutes Allan won a free kick deep in opposition territory; White sending it to the far post for Matty Bondswell to bundle home.

United made sure of victory nine minutes from full time when White did win a penalty that he took himself. Archie Matthews blocked the initial effort, but was unable to prevent Niall Brookwell lashing in the rebound.
