Goals

39 mins Son Heung-Min's foul on Joe Willock gave United a free kick just outside the box. Fabian Schar beat the defensive wall, goalkeeper Hugh Lloris and a VAR check for a handball by team mate Chris Wood to net.

The scorer ran the length of the field to celebrate in front of the away support, one of whom let off a
smoke bomb that soon dispersed. A bit of a damp squib then, which was to become a suitable metaphor for what followed. 1-0

43 mins A Spurs corner taken by Son on the left was reached by Burn but his awkward header back towards the corner flag reached Son via a combined deflection off Chris Wood and Eric Dier.

Son atoned for his earlier recklessness by providing a fine swinging cross for Ben Davies to glance home a header from six yards out.
1-1

Half time: Spurs 1 Newcastle
1

48 mins Schar's wayward pass from the right went straight to Dejan Kulusevski in the centre circle. He found Harry Kane who advanced to the right hand corner of the box before sending it over.

Although the unmarked Son looked to miss it right in front of goal, Matt Doherty was following in at the back post and stooped to beat Martin Dubravka; Javier Manquillo in attendance but unable to intervene.
1-2

54 mins Six straightforward passes took Spurs from their own six yard box to the opposite end of the field; the killer ball from Kane on halfway sending
Kulusevski scampering away down the right before playing in Son - who took a touch before passing the ball into the net. 1-3

63 mins A goal that appeared to be scored in slow motion: Son sweeping the ball out to the left wing from the edge of the area, Doherty taking Kulusevki's pass, finding space to cut back and dropping a cross into the near post area that scraped the studs of
Emerson Royal before bouncing into the net. 1-4

83 mins
A poor first touch from ASM just over halfway allowed Dier to assume possession and he nipped it forward to Son. He in turn slipped a pass to Lucas Moura, who played in
Steven Bergwijn before Burn tugged him by the neck. The Spurs substitute wandered forward to stroke the ball home from almost on the penalty spot. 1-5

Spurs 5 Newcastle 1

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"We contributed to that (scoreline).

"We were 1-0 up and executing a good plan. We were controlling them as best we could. We did the first part of the game well. The second goal is the key thing.

"It’s what we didn’t need to do. We chased the game in a way you can’t against this time of team. We took risks and didn’t execute it well enough. Against these teams you have to get every aspect of your game right: in the second half we didn’t

"They have players who can hurt you. Some of their football will be the highest level. It’s something we’ll have to learn from.

"I don’t think (it will affect) morale. In hindsight we might look back on this as a good thing. It might realign our thoughts and get us back to the basics.

"We’re still in a huge fight to stay in the division. That’s six away games in seven. Now we return home and they’ll be massive games.

"After a second half like that you want to play again very quickly. I want to put the memory of this game away.

”We produced a very good performance up until the moment Fabian
(Schar) scored. I was hugely disappointed to go in at 1-1. Bar a few nervy moments at the start I thought we'd controlled them.

"The key goal is the second goal - the manner of it from our perspective, we needed to feel our way into second half.

"Then we chased the game in a very aggressive way and played in a way we shouldn't have done. We were far too open but it was in our desire to chase the game.

"We became expansive, took risks with the ball and then got punished by a top-level team. Some of the goals they scored on transitions were very good. We didn't manage that part of the game at all.

"It's a massive period coming up for us. We're aware this run of games we've just exited out of was difficult for us, a lot of away games, and we're pleased to return home where our form has been good.

"We need the crowd and stadium united to make that atmosphere as intense as we can for our opponents. This is going to be a massive spell which will go a long way to dictate our fate this season.

"This is a little jolt and reminder we can't get ahead of ourselves. We have to fight and battle for every point. We have to use the pain of today in our next games and get the stadium absolutely rocking."

They Said

Antonio Conte said:

"This league is very difficult to try to be in the race for the Champions League. We want to stay there until the end. We have to try to continue to play this way with intensity, accuracy. My team is improving in many aspects.

"I’m very happy. I was happy before the international break. I said it was a pity we had to stop. I asked my players today to start in the same way we left. It was a good performance. Newcastle are a good team. They’ve changed totally now. Tactically they are very good. It wasn’t easy, we made the game easy.

"The first half we tried to be in control of the game. It was hard to find space. It was good to go 1-0 down because I’ve seen the right reaction of the players.

"In the past maybe when in difficulty you could lose your mind. Instead the team were very focused and a lot of positive things I’ve seen today.

"We know we have eight final games. Arsenal has a good advantage. We have to try to stay in the race and give our best, to make our fans happy. Our fans enjoy watching the team playing this way, scoring so many goals.

"At the end of the season not to regret. If we give everything, then we’ll see what we can reach.

"The space between games so we can work and not play every three days is helping us. When you come in during the season you have to prepare for game, game, game.

"To have more days to work with my players is helpful to us as I have more time to transfer my philosophies on football to my players. This is very important. We can improve. This performance and the last few performances have given us great confidence but in England this league is difficult.

"To play against us is difficult at the moment."

On Harry Kane:

"His performance was amazing.

"I said to him it was a shame he didn't score but he played in a fantastic way. To have a player like him in your team makes you strong. To know we have him in our side is very important because we he can score and create to chances.

"First of all I like the person. Some players with talent don't want to work hard. I have found a player who is a great man. He set the example from the very first day. This isn't normal because usually when you are top player you can work less, sometimes you are a bit lazy.

"He is a big example for his team mates. I have seen his desire to be competitive in every competition."

Stats

This was Newcastle's third visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and their first loss, after a 1-0 win in 2019/20 and a 1-1 draw last season. All three games came against different home bosses (Pochettino, Mourinho and now Conte - we only faced an Espirito Santo side at SJP).

Fabian Schar netted his second goal of the season and his ninth for the club - all in the Premier League. That takes him ahead of Miguel Almiron and Joelinton, level with Jamaal Lascelles and just two behind Jonjo Shelvey and Allan Saint-Maximin.

Schar became the third Magpie to net direct from a free kick in the PL this season, after Jonjo Shelvey and Kieran Trippier.

His goal was the 13th that we've scored away from home this season, one more than our previous lowest total in a full PL campaign. That tally of 12 came in 2015/16. The Magpies also managed 13 in 1997/98.

United conceded five goals in a PL game for the first time since a 2-5 loss at Leeds in December 2020. Just two of the starting line-up here survived from that Elland Road defeat, Ryan Fraser and Joelinton.

As was the case here today, there were five different opposition scorers in that game and we conceded four goals in the second half for the first time since that night in Yorkshire.

Spurs became the second side this season to complete a PL double over Newcastle, following Chelsea.

It's now 12 PL games since Newcastle were last trailing at half time (0-2 behind to Manchester City at home in December 2021).

And today was the tenth time that they have taken the lead in a PL game this season but not gone on to collect all three points.

United wore their black kit, or a third different version of it. Clad in black shirt, shorts and socks at Villa, Brighton and Leeds, the visit to West Ham saw them don gold socks. They reappeared today along with gold shorts.

Newcastle's extended four game road trip came to a humbling conclusion in North London on Sunday, going ahead before suffering a third successive defeat that ended their unbeaten run at this venue.

Having failed to net at both Chelsea and Everton only to concede late winners, Eddie Howe's side renewed hostilities after a two week break that sent internationals around the globe and the rest of the squad to Dubai.

And like the warm weather training camp in January, the positive impact on the team initially seemed favourable as United held their own against an inconsistent Spurs side before breaking their own mini scoring drought.

However the illusion of comfort and control was almost instantly banished as Spurs levelled. Unlike our maiden victory here back in 2019 when Joelinton had scored before the half hour, the Magpies were unable to retain that lead until half time - and what happened after the interval was simply disastrous.

The break was at least reached with both sides level on goals and numbers; a flare-up in added time seeing referee Martin Atkinson book three players. Rodrigo Bentancur's attempt to nut Allan Saint-Maximin was deemed only to be a yellow card offence; Joelinton perhaps also fortunate that his wasn't a different colour after forcibly shoving the Spurs man to the ground.

The second half was a rather different matter however and within ten minutes Antonio Conte's side had a two goal lead that looked like increasing; the vision and movement of Kane and Son teasing and tormented the visitors.

Eddie Howe's response was swift and positive; Bruno Guimaraes and Jacob Murphy introduced as the visitors sought to provide a threat rather than go for damage limitation. Sadly though it was to be Spurs who got the next goal: a 1-4 deficit with over a quarter of the match left hardly auguring well.

The hosts made changes of their own and thankfully wasted chances to damage our goal difference still further - the arrival of Jamaal Lascelles to flank Schar and Dan Burn only partly stemming the flow. The latter player endured a difficult afternoon that may mute some of the recent wind about England selection and/or being our best ever January transfer arrival.

At times we were cut to ribbons and a bewildering number of positional changes that left Murphy up front and Shelvey in defence at one point prompted unwelcome recollections of similar randomness under Bruce.

A fifth goal belatedly arrived courtesy of substitute Steven Bergwijn, but Spurs at least failed to put half a dozen in our net in one game for the first time since 1950 (a 7-0 conquest of us en route to them winning the title).

Losing to a side who ended the day fourth is no great shock, but the speed with which we imploded was concerning; the return of Shelvey perhaps too early after illness and the individuality of Saint-Maximin a hindrance rather than a help.

Although they remain nine points clear of the bottom three, Howe's assertion that Newcastle remain in a relegation fight is completely correct; relying on the bottom teams continuing to fail isn't an option.

A three point haul from our four game-long road trip matched our prediction - and gave a pertinent reminder that we're very far from the finished article, or consistently competitive. That reality check may be no bad thing.

Players and fans now return to the comparative sanctuary of SJP for a trio of games after a month away, looking to extend a three game winning run there. Friday's visit of Wolves always seemed a more likely source of points than today's test and when the dust settles, that really hasn't altered.
