Goals

Half time: Magpies 0 Gunners 0

56 mins A foul throw gave United possession and once Saint-Maximin sent Joelinton down the left his dangerous cross was turned into the Gallowgate net by White under pressure from Wilson.

It looked all the world like a deserved goal for man-of-the-match Wilson and the sort that was undoubtedly credited to strikers from previous eras.
1-0

85 mins Sean Longstaff's dinked pass into the box saw Ramsdale come off his line and smother the ball as Wilson closed in, but Bruno was on hand to fire past Cedric Soares on the goal line to seal the victory. 2-0

Full time: Magpies 2 Gunners 0

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"(It's a) big turnaround from that game (the 0-2 loss at the Emirates in late November when Howe was first able to occupy the dugout post-COVID).

"That was a really frustrating day; we left the stadium that day in a difficult moment. We knew we had a massive second half of the season. Luckily the players responded brilliantly to the challenge.

"This was the best performance since my arrival: the motivation was personal pride and performing in front of our supporters and leaving on a good note into the summer.

'We were very aggressive, good physically. It's not an easy game, Arsenal are top quality. Credit to the players.

"We knew this was something we hadn't achieved - getting something against the top six. In the future we'll have to compete against these teams. We have to have confidence we can win anywhere. This will help us today.

"A whole host of things have helped us turn the results around - unity, team spirit and January definitely helped with quality players coming in. The mentality of the group, they were determined not to get relegated.

'The hardest thing for me this summer is to keep that (collective spirit) intact while changing the dynamic of the group.

'There's a massive connection between us and the fans. The minimum we can give them is 100% effort every time we play. That's what they want to see. I think we've delivered that in the main.'

"It was a brilliant all-round performance. We played with intensity and never let up. We approached the game in a brilliant manner and we did the Premier League proud tonight.....we deservedly beat them.

"We wanted to press Arsenal and not let them settle into a rhythm but also for the first time in recent performances we saw a team that could have the ball comfortably and be creative.

"Arsenal competed well and fought well but they left spaces for us and we exploited them.

"Callum Wilson worked incredibly hard to get back to full fitness. He deserves all the accolades tonight.

"It's been a brilliant thing to be part of. We've done it through team spirit and unity. We'll remain very calm in this moment because it's a brilliant win but that's all it is.

"We have to work to improve in the summer. We're a massive club with big ambitions but my job is to focus on how we do it rather than talk.

"(It was a) brilliant way for us to sign off here: very, very pleased with the performance. I think it’s our best performance, by some distance, since I’ve been at the club.

"
(I'm) very, very proud to be connected with the club, an incredible debt of thanks from me to the supporters for how they have handled what was a very difficult situation this year.

"When you think back to Cambridge and Watford, how they reacted after those games was absolutely magnificent.

"I think that paved the way for us to build some confidence and some unity and spirit to go on the brilliant run that we’ve been on. The support tonight was absolutely incredible.

"The atmosphere around the stadium was something I’ve not really experienced before. Just a big thank you to them.”

They Said

Mikel Arteta spoke to Sky Sports:

"Newcastle deserved to win the match and were much better than us. We had nothing in the game. They were much better in every department and we were poor with the ball.

"A lot of things happened during the game, like substitutions for injuries, but it's not an excuse because they were much better than us.

"It's true that we could not cope with the game that we had to play here. We tried to change some things but it didn't make it better. We had moments where we looked better but then the execution was so poor and the goals we gave away were extremely poor.

"It's extremely disappointing that Newcastle were 10 times better than us and the performance was nowhere near the level we need to be at if we want to play in the Champions League.

"I am incredibly disappointed. It's a very painful one. It was in our hands and today it's not in our hands. We have to beat Everton and wait for Norwich to beat Spurs. There's always a tiny chance in football."

He then warmed to his theme on the BBC:

"Incredibly disappointed. The way we started to the finish, Newcastle were better. They deserved to win by a mile. It's a really difficult one to accept.

"We have to cope with those nights and we didn't cope with those nights.

"We haven't been able to deal with situations throughout the season. The squad suffered a lot with injuries but that can't be an excuse.

"Newcastle were 100 times better than us, the way we competed today (was disappointing). In every department you have to earn the right to play and we didn't do it.

"We have to put our head down and accept the performance was nowhere near the standard required for the Champions League. From tomorrow we'll prepare for Everton. It's still mathematically possible."

Granit Xhaka had Wimbledon on his mind:

"From the first minute to the 90th we didn’t deserve to be on the pitch today. What happened was a disaster performance and like this you don’t deserve to play Champions League, you don’t even deserve to play Europa League.

"It’s very hard to take at the moment. I don’t know why we’re not doing what the coaches ask for. If someone isn’t ready for this game, stay at home. It doesn’t matter the age. If you’re not ready or you’re nervous, stay on the bench, stay at home, don’t come here.

"We need people to have the balls to come here and play. We knew this game was maybe the most important for us but, with a performance like this, it’s not acceptable.

"If you don’t listen to the coach, if you do your own stuff and whatever you think on the pitch, it doesn’t work. People speak always about leaders. We are not playing tennis, we're playing football, we're 11 against 11, we need everyone on the pitch.

"It doesn’t matter the age - if someone isn’t ready for this pressure like today, stay at home and watch the game from home. You can’t come here and perform like this. We can’t accept it. We looked today very, very bad."

Stats

United beat Arsenal for the only the second time in 21 games - the North London side winning 18 of the previous 19 meetings in all competitions.

The White OG was the first scored our favour against Arsenal since Ciaran Clark's header in September 2018 at the same (Gallowgate) end of SJP.

That ended a PL goal drought of 595 minutes against the Gunners (715 minutes in all competitions, including an FA Cup tie settled in extra time).

A couple of other milestones tonight:

A first victory & clean sheet anywhere against Arsenal since a 1-0 win at the Emirates in November 2010 (Andy Carroll).

A first victory & clean sheet at SJP since a 1-0 win in December 2005 (Nolberto Solano).

A first victory over Arsenal anywhere by more than one goal since a 3-1 win at Highbury in December 2001 (O'Brien, Alan Shearer, Laurent Robert).

A first victory over Arsenal at SJP by more than one goal since a 4-2 season closing win in May 2000 (Gary Speed 2, Shearer, Andy Griffin).

Despite winning just one of their first 11 home games, United reached 30 points at SJP for the first PL season since 2011/12:

2011/12 38 points from 19 matches
2012/13 28 points from 19 matches
2013/14 27 points from 19 matches
2014/15 26 points from 19 matches
2015/16 28 points from 19 matches
2017/18 28 points from 19 matches
2018/19 25 points from 19 matches
2019/20 26 points from 19 matches
2020/21 23 points from 19 matches
2021/22 30 points from 19 matches

The Magpies ended their PL home campaign having scored 26 goals, exactly matching their 2020/21 total.

Discounting Bank Holidays, this was Newcastle's first PL Monday home fixture since a 3-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in December 2012.

Bruno Guimaraes
netted his fifth goal for the club, four of which have come in his last six appearances.

Ben White became the third opposition player to put the ball into his own net this season when facing Newcastle in the Premier League, following Eric Dier (Spurs) and Mason Holgate (Everton). That's the highest PL OG total in our favour since the five that we benefited from in 2011/12.

With one game remaining, Newcastle have 46 points, their highest top-flight total since reaching 49 in the 2013/14 season.

Newcastle destroyed Arsenal's Champions League dreams with a fantastic two-goal victory at St. James' Park on Monday evening, bringing their home fixtures to the most memorable of conclusions.

An intense atmosphere inspired United to their best display under Eddie Howe; Callum Wilson's pressure breaking the deadlock before a late second from Bruno Guimaraes put Mikel Arteta's side out of their misery.

Making his first start since last December, United's number nine was in unstoppable form despite having dislodged one of his front teeth and split his lip midway through the opening half.

Wilson's run into the box to meet Joelinton's cross tempted visiting defender Ben White to stick his boot out, diverting the ball past his own 'keeper. Our top scorer then twice came close to extending his tally, volleying an inspired centre from Bruno over before a spectacular 40-yard effort was a whisker away.

On a night when the crowd fully lived up to their twelfth man status, the eleven players who started the game outclassed their opponents in every department - Jamaal Lascelles also giving a tremendous performance when called upon to replace concussion victim Fabian Schar.

Wilson led the way with typical guile and a turn of pace that raises hopes that he may have improved his durability not just his fitness - a willingness to get in where it hurts also dispelling fears that he was anything other than 100%.

Longstaff was at his most relaxed and confident for a long time while there were hints that Saint-Maximin was trying to curb his individual instincts, even tracking back after a fashion

Only one team ever looked likely to win, but given the prize Arsenal were playing for, it defies belief that they came up so short - even taking into account an injury list that lengthened during the
game.

The home players still had to respond and they did that from the first whistle; captain Wilson leading the way, ably assisted by his colleagues who showed great heart, skill and endeavour to eclipse the meek Gunners.

Pressure and possession weren't initially followed by efforts on goal, Allan Saint-Maximin coming closest in the first half with a trademark run and shot that Aaron Ramsdale pushed round his post in the 36th minute.

United were ahead ten minutes after the interval and substitute Jacob Murphy was denied by Ramsdale before a visiting side committing more and more resources to their attack were undone at the back in the 85th minute.

The post-match scenes were as memorable as those beforehand; reactions from those whose attendance here spans decades rather than years suggesting that this was an occasion without parallel: all for a team who began the game fourteenth in the table, nine points ahead of the drop zone.

That is anything but logical, but a momentous climax to a home campaign seemingly destined to be a debacle, only to evolve into our best run of form here in a decade really is worth celebrating - capped by a genuine scalp to end what was a run of nine losses to teams currently in the top five.

To have ended on such a triumphant note is difficult to take in, but the belief that better days await is now evident on the field, in the boardroom and in the stands. That's the sub-text to what may appear excessive celebrations to outsiders; the sense of genuine anticipation and this not being a one-off like Howay 5-0, the Old Trafford Semi-Final victories or Barcelona at home.

Avoiding relegation this season was imperative, but rather than stumbling over the line as in previous years, tonight's glorious finale repaid the support handsomely - despite having little tangible to play for. Bonuses and prize money may be at stake, but the lure of a sunbed has often been greater round these parts come May.

Victory left the Magpies 12th in the table ahead of Sunday's trip to Turf Moor with a top-half finish still possible: nothing short of supernatural. You really do dream of nights like this, but not usually after a season like this.
