We Said

Eddie Howe
(
watched the Pope XI for the first half against the senior Burnley side and then stayed in situ as the Darlow XI faced the same opposition) said:

to follow

(Sporting Director Dan Ashworth was also in attendance)

They Said

Vincent Kompany (who emulated Howe so therefore saw 90 minutes of his senior side and nothing of his more junior XI) said:

"No injuries is the main thing, I thought the running was good. It was competitive, there wasn't much in the game and we worked well.

"There was two very competitive squads out there, in us and Newcastle.

"I wanted to stretch the squad and see what our maximum capacity is, it's a good way to compare what we have."

Stats

Jamaal Lascelles captained the Darlow XI Dan Burn took the armband for the Pope XI.

24 players were used by NUFC here, with no mention of the following: Martin Dubravka, Chris Wood, Jamal Lewis, Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez, Kelland Watts, Alex Murphy and Jay Turner-Cooke.

Left back Matty Bondswell made his second senior appearance for the club, a year to the day that he got on for the final five minutes of a friendly victory at Doncaster Rovers. He sported squad number 34 today.

Clad in the 44 shirt, Santiago Munoz meanwhile made his first team bow for the Magpies.

This was the fifth and sixth time that Newcastle and Burnley's first XIs have met in less than a year:

Aug 2021 lost 0-1 (a) BCD friendly
Aug 2021 drew 0-0 (h) LC (lost on pens)
Dec 2021 won 1-0 (h) Premier League
May 2022 won 2-1 (a) Premier League
July 2022 won 3-0 (n) BCD friendly
July 2022 won 6-2 (n) BCD friendly

Burnley wore last season's home kit (without sponsors) for both games but declined to supply any team line-ups - meaning ours are just an attempt.

There's only two United's

Newcastle warmed up for Tuesday's friendly against Benfica with a behind closed doors kickabout against Burnley in Lisbon on Saturday.

Eddie Howe and his opposite number Vincent Kompany agreed to play eleven-a-side matches simultaneously on adjacent pitches - an arrangement that isn't uncommon in youth matches but was a first for us at senior level.

United lined up with two XIs of similar stature, but the Championship Clarets fielded one experienced line-up and one rather more youthful ensemble.

So far so good, until half time was reached and it became evident that while the Burnley sides were remaining in situ, the Newcastle ones were swapping pitches and therefore opponents for the second period.

That created something of a headache in quite how to record events on the pitch(es), with our initial offering based on what happened on each pitch during the full 90 minutes.

NUFC however opted to report the games as a training session comprising of four 45 minute practice matches, with no 90 minute "full time" outcomes.

Obrigado to our man in the bushes, GW
