Teams

Goals

11 mins Kieran Trippier's centre from the Newcastle right was headed back across goal by Joe Willock to Callum Wilson, who was lurking at the back post to touch it home from almost on the line at the Hammersmith End.

A brief VAR check confirm that there was no offside, without any need for the referee to consult his pitchside monitor.
1-0

33 mins An extended passing sequence saw the ball played across from the United right to the left and back again, until Miggy Almiron swapped passes with Bruno Guimaraes on the right hand side of the penalty area before planting a sublime left foot volley over the goalkeeper's head.

Comparisons with efforts from Peter Beardsley at Hillsborough and Papiss Cisse at Stamford Bridge followed, but given that both those efforts came from the left flank then the exchange of passes with Cole and right-footed volley from Pedro at Loftus Road in January 1994 is nearer the mark.

And while it was unclear from the far end of the ground whether Miggy had meant it, one viewing of the footage confirmed that it was befitting of "worldie" status, rather than "flukey"...
2-0

43 mins Trippier's corner from the right was met by Sven Botman, whose header flicked off the post; Sean Longstaff reacting first to slot the rebound between 'keeper and post from just inside the six yard box. 3-0

Half time: Cottagers 0 Magpies 3

57 mins Jacob Murphy made unimpeded progress down the United left, passing to Willock who raced into the box before squaring it for Miggy Almiron to knock home at the far post at the Putney End. 4-0

88 mins The visiting defence failed to deal with the cross of Neeskens Kebano from the left hand side of the box and the simple headed finish of Bobby Reid that evaded the advancing Nick Pope. 4-1

Full time: Cottagers 1 Magpies 4

We Said

Eddie Howe:

"It has been a long time coming. We have had a long wait for the second win of the season. Right from the start we had a good feeling, with good energy, and created chances early on.

"Obviously, the red card made it easier but I am very pleased with the players' response. Their attitude - we wanted more, we weren't happy with what we had, always trying to score.

"It's been a very difficult two weeks. Obviously, we have had the international break, with players going away, but we have also had a bit of illness in the camp, so it's been a mixed two weeks but it didn't show in our performance.

"Today was a day that was all positive for us. It was a really good performance from the group. It was a very important game for us – we knew we needed to win.

"We knew we needed to perform well – we know how difficult this ground can be and how good a team Fulham are.

"The sending off certainly helped us, but even before that, I felt there was a good feel about the team. I thought the body language and our attitude to the game was spot on.”

On the red card:

"It's difficult; I haven’t seen it again, but my initial feeling was, ‘Ooh, that’s high’. Whenever there’s height and force, the player’s safety is in danger.

"I thought Sean was lucky to get up from that one. I think the referee had a similar view – hence why he gave the red card."

On Almiron:

"I’ve seen it. Crystal Palace last year, the goal he scored that day was an individual goal and had similar parts to it to today’s goal.

"He’s capable of doing magical things and for me that was a magical goal. Bruno
(Guimaraes) again was involved and they’ve got a really good understanding the pair of them.

"I’m delighted for Miggy, he’s such an infectious character, his work sort of epitomises our play really so it was great to see.”

On Callum Wilson:

"The one he’s missed early on he’ll probably be disappointed with. The goal that he did score is a typical striker’s finish. He’s in the right place at the right time to finish the move off.

"He’s a hugely important part of our team, a focal point. We rely not just on his goals but his movement, his work rate. His appearance in the team gave us confidence.

"Knowing Callum as I do, I don’t think anything really fazes him other than trying to be the best that he can be. He’s got an incredible attitude to the game, an incredible way of looking at life and football.

"He will see it as healthy competition. It will inspire him to perform better because he knows he’s got someone (Isak), plus Chris Wood, breathing down his neck and that’s very healthy for the team."

On Joelinton:

"Joelinton picked up a knee injury against Bournemouth and hadn’t trained. He wanted to be involved, the type of character that he is.

"I wanted to protect him, knowing how important he is. He was there if we needed him in an absolute emergency, and my hand was forced with him.

"Hopefully, a week’s training will make a difference for him, and he’ll be back next week, and available for selection.”

On ASM:

"Hopefully, Allan will be back next weekend too. It’s always difficult to give a guarantee, but he did train with the team yesterday and trained well.

"For me, it was too early to involve him. We need to make sure that when he comes back, he’s fit enough to do himself and the team justice. Hopefully, with a good training week under his belt, he could be close.”

On Matt Targett:

"Matt had been ill, so we decided not to risk him. That’s why I said in the press conference yesterday it had been a difficult two weeks for us – not just in terms of injuries, but illness running through the team as well. I’m delighted to come here and win off the back of that.”

They Said

Marco Silva
said:

"Yes it was a disappointing afternoon, a strange afternoon. The red card made a huge impact in the game and the second goal killed our belief.

"It is difficult to talk about the challenge. I have strange feeling after seeing it many times on TV. People who play football know if you keep stopping the moments you will probably find five or 10 red cards in a game.

You have to keep looking at the moments to understand what you are seeing. The referee was clearly there. He told me it was a clear yellow card.

"After so long a time to find one picture of Nathaniel's tackle it is difficult for me to accept. If it will always be like that, I would accept it. But I am 100% sure that in moments like that, one will be a yellow card and that's it.

"This is the difficult situation to understand. We need to see consistency in these situation or you have to give the yellow card.

"I think in the next few weeks in tough matches you will see moments like this one where it will be a yellow card. These decisions feel strange to us.

"So congratulations to Newcastle. The scenario was made much easier for them after the red card. Even so, with 10 players in the first half, we should do much better in certain moments.

"In certain moments we were not aggressive enough. I can say the three moments they scored in the first half we could do much better.

"I am really confident that 11 v 11 the result would have been different."

Stats

This was only the seventh time in 521 PL games that Newcastle have scored three goals away from home before half time:

Oct 2022 Fulham (a) 3-0 up, won 4-1
Mar 2012
West Bromwich Albion (a) 3-0 up, won 3-1
Feb 2009 West Bromwich Albion (a) 3-1 up, won 3-2
Aug 2007 Bolton Wanderers (a) 3-0 up, won 3-1
Apr 1999 Derby County (a) 3-2 up, won 4-3
Sep 1998 Coventry City (a) 3-1 up, won 5-1
Dec 1995 Wimbledon (a) 3-0 up, drew 3-3

The last time Newcastle scored three goals in the first half of a PL game was against Southampton at SJP in February 2021 (3-1 up).

The last time Newcastle scored three goals in the first half of any game was at Morecambe in the League Cup in September 2020 (5-0 up).

United hit four goals away from SJP in the PL for the first time since a 4-2 win at Leicester City in May 2021. That was also the last time that they scored four times anywhere in the PL.

A three goal margin of victory on the road was last achieved via a 3-0 success at Norwich City in April 2022.

The Magpies last won 4-1 away from home in July 2020, racking up that scoreline at Bournemouth - who at the time were managed by Eddie Howe.

Following victories in May 2019 (4-0) and May 2021 (2-0), United secured their third consecutive win at Craven Cottage - something never previously achieved.

In terms of PL away win sequences, three in a row matches previous runs at Spurs, Leeds United and the mackems. Our only sequence of four consecutive PL victories to date came against Crystal Palace.

Miguel Almiron
now has 12 PL goals to his name, level with Allan Saint-Maximin. He's is joint top scorer this season with Callum Wilson on three. Almiron's highest PL total for a season is four, he managed just one goal in 2021/22.

Callum Wilson
netted for the 23rd time as a Magpie, all of them in the PL. That total takes him clear of Laurent Robert, level with Kieron Dyer and three behind Michael Owen.

Sean Longstaff
scored his first goal of the season and fourth for United in the PL. That nudges him one ahead of Paul Dummett and Kieran Trippier, level with Jacob Murphy and one behind Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle's wait for a second Premier League victory of the season ended in spectacular fashion on Saturday, as they continued their excellent form at Craven Cottage.

Successes here in both 2019 and 2021 came against a Fulham side already condemned to relegation, but today's dismantling was of a side who'd beaten Brentford and Brighton here and were held to a draw by Liverpool.

The VAR-dictated dismissal of Fulham's Nathaniel Chalobah for a high challenge on Sean Longstaff after just eight minutes put the hosts on the back foot and within three minutes United were a goal up.

Fit again following a four game absence, Callum Wilson was in the right place to touch home Joe Willock's header across goal from point-blank range, another VAR check soon confirming that he was onside.

There was no doubt about Newcastle's second goal of the game on 33 minutes though -  Miggy Almiron swapping passes with Bruno Guimaraes on the right hand side of the penalty area before planting a sublime left foot volley over the goalkeeper's head.

That second goal saw Aleksandar Mitrovic, hobble off after barely touching the ball and fellow SJP old boy Kevin Mbabu was also replaced before the break.

By then though the blue-clad Magpies had claimed a deserved third goal, Sven Botman heading against the post from a corner and Sean Longstaff reacting first to sweep home the rebound.

Unchanged for the second half, United added to their tally 12 minutes after the restart when Murphy and Willock combined to give Almiron a simple chance in front of an away section that included new signing Garang Koul.

Eddie Howe took the opportunity to rest both Bruno and Wilson, the lively Elliot Anderson arriving and coming close to his first top-flight goal.

The youngster thought he'd laid on a hat-trick goal for Miggy on 69 minutes, only for an offside flag to halt celebrations - Ryan Fraser similarly frustrated in the last minute of normal time.

By then Fulham were on the scoresheet, as a visiting defence with a trio of second half changes failed to deal with the cross of Neeskens Kebano and the simple headed finish of Bobby Reid.

A good number of home fans had given up and gone by then though; some of those paying £90 for the privilege of sitting in the new Riverside Stand abandoning their posts at the end of the first half.

The sending-off inevitably affected what followed, but at eleven v eleven this barely looked like a fair fight; Wilson hitting a post early on and Fulham looking completely unprepared for the task in hand from the first whistle.

Their cause wasn't helped by the suspension that robbed them of influential midfielder Joao Palhinha, while two 90 minute shifts for Serbia in the last week left Mitro anything but in the mood for a first goal or victory against his former employers.

Buoyed by the return of Wilson and Bruno, Newcastle dominated to an extent that the final score barely conveys their superiority until they lost their way late on. It's no exaggeration to say that we could have got eight.

Despite just losing once in seven league games this season though, that failure to add to the opening day victory was starting to become a concern after frustrating draws against Palace and Bournemouth.

As it is, team and manager gained a tangible reward for their efforts today ahead of a hectic series of games - with other reinforcements still to return.

Payback also for Toon fans, who once again overcame significant transport obstacles to get here - rail strikes extending journey times and costs while also putting paid to the hoped-for riverboat jolly.  Beer always tastes good after an away win - especially in London.
