Stats:

Joelinton and Fabian Schar remain one booking away from serving one game bans while Sven Botman has returned to training but won't be considered for selection. Emil Krafth and Jamaal Lascelles remain out.

If they play, both Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes will complete a century of PL appearances for Newcastle.

Kieran Trippier's next game meanwhile will bring up the 100 for him as a Magpie in all competitions.

United are attempting to defeat Liverpool on Tyneside for the first time since December 2015; incurring five
losses and two draws since then as they remain stuck on 49 all-time league and cup wins against them.

Since drawing at home and away with Liverpool in the 2020/21 season, the Magpies have lost all six meetings despite scoring the first goal on three occasions.

Wor Flags confirm that their Kevin Keegan inspired display will not take place before this game, but that funds raised specifically for that purpose have been set aside for when it does happen.

Sky's resident Toon fan Pete Graves wrote on social media that KK is "unable to attend this Wednesday."

Arne Slot

The 46 year-old Dutchman has seen his side win 18 of their 20 league and cup games so far this season, the only two exceptions a 0-1 home loss to Nottingham Forest and a 2-2 draw at Arsenal, both in the PL.

Slot left SJP empty-handed on his last visit, part of the NAC Breda side beaten 5-0 by Newcastle in the UEFA Cup back in September 2003.

Giveaway -answer

Tyneside's premier hosiers Sock Council have restocked two of their most popular designs, inspired by classic Newcastle home and away kits of the mid 1990s.

Manufactured in Portugal, the Ferdinand (home) and Ginola (away) designs are available here along with dozens of other styles - not all football-related.

We had pairs of Ferdinand and Ginola socks up for grabs in a free-to-enter competition and set this question:

The final time that Ginola and Ferdinand shared a pitch for Newcastle competitively was a 1-1 draw against the mackems at Gallowgate in April 1997.

Ex-Magpies Paul Bracewell, David Kelly and Chris Waddle all featured for the red and whites - which future Newcastle outfield player was in the mackem line-up?

The answer was of course Michael Bridges and the name of the winner will appear here on Thursday.

U21s:
Boston three party

Boston United  3  Newcastle U21s  2

A late collapse on Tuesday night left Newcastle U21s in peril of missing out on qualification for the knockout stages of the inaugural Premier League Cup.

Having recovered from going behind to lead 2-1 with 15 minutes left, news that Leeds United had drawn at Halifax in another Group C tie meant that the second- placed Magpies were set to claim top spot.

However that rapidly changed as Boston scored twice in five minutes and Leeds won their penalty shootout to collect the additional point on offer.

Defeat for Newcastle in Lincolnshire saw the hosts go ahead of them into the second qualification spot. As a consequence, victory in the final game at Gateshead next month may not be enough for qualification.

Second bottom of the National League, Boston lined up with just five of the players that started a 0-0 draw against basement side Ebbsfleet United last weekend.

They went ahead when Sam Osborne hit a dipping effort from just inside the left corner of the box in the sixth minute; Aidan Harris seemingly to think it was going wide, only to drop over him and into his net.

The Magpies levelled on 14 minutes; Alfie Harrison's low shot from outside the box clipping the boot of Ben Parkinson and deceiving goalkeeper Aidan Stone.

Harris denied Osborne again in the 37th minute and two minutes before the break, Palmer charged down the right and found Parkinson who finished into the roof of the net from 12 yards for his ninth U21 goal of the season.

The turning point of the tie came early in the second period when Parkinson blasted over when Harrison was well-placed to finish. Had the Magpies gone 3-1 up then, the outcome could have been very different.

Amid a flurry of Newcastle substitutions, the Pilgrims levelled in the 76th minute after a scramble in the area; Pemi Aderoju getting the final touch from close in.

Five minutes later Boston regained the lead when two substitutes combined; Adam Marriott crossed from the right hand byline and Frankie Maguire bundling the ball home at the back post.

Team: Harris, Shahar (H.Powell 68), Murphy, Hayden (Bailey 61), Heffernan, McArthur, Palmer (Sedibeh 77), L.Miley, Parkinson, Al.Harrison (Huntley 77), Emerson (Donaldson 61).
Subs n/u: Taylor, Stanton.

BUFC: Stone, Aderoju, Coates (Scott 77), Green, Hazel (Marriott 62), Leak, Osborne (Maguire 62), Rowe, Ward, Weston (Chadwick 46), Woods (Richards 33).
Subs n/u: Lovelace, Hill.

Crowd: officially 386 housed in the main stand - an under-estimation of those present in our eyes.

Admission: £10 adults

Referee: Michael Crusham.

This was Newcastle's first-ever visit to the three-sided Jakemans Stadium that has been home to Boston United since December 2020.

However the Magpies played several times at their former York Street ground, beginning with a first team kickabout in February 1989 that the visitors won 1-0.

October 2003 then saw Newcastle reserves visit York Street to record a 3-2 Pontins League victory.

The last game there was a 0-4 friendly loss for the reserves in July 2004, Boston fielding ex-Magpies Paul Gascoigne and Chris Holland that night.

The draw for this season's FA Cup Third Round took place on Monday night, with Newcastle landing a home tie against League Two Bromley

The first-ever meeting of the two clubs will take place over the weekend of January 11th 2025.

Full Third Round draw:

Southampton v Swansea City
Arsenal v Manchester United
Exeter City v Oxford United
Leyton Orient v Derby County
Reading v Burnley
Aston Villa v West Ham
Norwich City v Brighton & Hove Albion
Manchester City v Salford
Millwall v Dagenham & Redbridge
Liverpool v Accrington Stanley
Bristol City v Wolves
Preston North End v Charlton Athletic
Chelsea v Morecambe

Everton v Peterborough United
Wycombe Wanderers v Portsmouth
Birmingham City v Lincoln City
Leeds United v Harrogate Town
Nottingham Forest v Luton Town
Sheffield United v Cardiff City
Ipswich Town v Bristol Rovers
Fulham v Watford
Crystal Palace v Stockport County

Promoted to the Football League for the first time via the National League playoffs in May, Bromley are managed by former Magpie coach Andy Woodman.

They reached the Third Round for the first time in their history thanks to a 4-3 win at Rochdale followed by a 2-1 success away to Solihull Moors.

At least one member of the Ravens squad has netted against the Magpies; Marcus Dinanga on target during a pre-season game in 2023 while a Gateshead player.

Fellow Bromley striker Olufela Olomola meanwhile played once for Newcastle U18s as a trialist back in 2014.

Defender Carl Jenkinson has previously played at Gallowgate in the colours of Arsenal and West Ham - wisely getting out of the way as Jonas Gutierrez memorably fired home against the latter in 2015.

Ticket sale information is awaited, but those signed up the home ticket scheme for FA Cup ties are set to pay £30 or £35 depending on their seating area.

The draw ends a run of five successive away ties for United, whose last FA Cup tie at SJP was the 0-1 loss to Cambridge United in January 2022 - the only time Eddie Howe has overseen a home tie in the competition.

Ticket prices for that were set at £10 (the published matchday price of £20 didn't apply as the tie sold out during the advance sale period).

All replays have been scrapped, with ties settled via extra time if drawn at 90 minutes and then penalties if drawn at 120 minutes.

This draw means that Newcastle will play three successive home games - the visit of Bromley followed by PL games against Wolves and Bournemouth.

And were United to defeat Brentford in the Carabao Cup quarter-final later this month and be drawn at home first in the two-legged semi-final, that would be played before Bromley visit - making it four at SJP in a row.

PS: This draw leaves Newcastle still to face Barrow, Crawley Town, Fleetwood Town, Harrogate Town, MK Dons, Salford and Wycombe Wanderers competitively from the current 92 in senior football.

U18s:
Divine intervention

Manchester City U18s  7  Newcastle U18s  1

Newcastle U18s suffering their heaviest defeat of the season on Saturday, with a familiar face punishing the visiting defence in the blue half of Manchester.

Amidst strong interest from the Magpies in 2023, West Ham midfielder Divine Mukasa opted to join Manchester City and provided ample evidence of what they missed out on with three goals and one assist here.

City raced into a four-goal lead before the break, Reigan Heskey - son of former England striker Emile - firing in from just inside the box after eight minutes.

Finley Gorman's strike from distance then doubled the home side's lead after 25 minutes before Ryan McAidoo jinked forward and shot home four minutes later.

Mukasa's first meaningful involvement then came six
minutes before half-time, picking out the advancing Dante Headley with a pass for him to bag a fourth.

Logan Watts gave United brief hope four minutes after the restart, heading in substitute Thomas Bryant's left wing corner kick.

Mukasa then came to the fore, noting that visiting 'keeper Adam Harrison was off his line as the game restarted and beating him from the halfway line.

Sean Neave was then fouled in the box at the expense of a penalty, but City custodian Max Hudson dived to his right to acrobatically deny United's top scorer - Michael Mills reaching the rebound but shooting too weakly.

17 year-old Mukasa chested the ball home in the 66th minute to make it 6-1 one to City, before completing his hat-trick with a tap-in seven minutes from the end of normal time.

Team: Ad.Harrison, Johnson, Watts, Craggs, Cogdon (Durrant 77), Ferreira (Bryant 46), Munda (Alabi 62), Finneran (Taylor 77), Mills, Brayson, Neave.

Ahead of our visit, Thomas Frank's side visit Aston Villa in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Since Newcastle's 4-2 victory there on the final day of last season, Brentford are unbeaten in all nine league and cup games on home territory. However they have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of those games.

Their PL record at the Gtech so far this season is won six and drawn one, with their tally of 22 goals scored in those games the best in the division.

Referee: Tim Robinson - first time in the middle for a Newcastle game this season for the Sussex official. A quartet of PL appointments in 2023/24 included three resounding home wins and the 0-3 loss at Everton.

Latest:
John McNamee RIP

The passing of former Newcastle United defender John McNamee has been confirmed, at the age of 83.

Glaswegian John made 132 appearances for the Magpies between 1966 and 1971, debuting in a 0-4 loss at Spurs on the last day of 1966
and playing his part as United pulled clear of the First Division relegation places.

The following season saw John etch his name in Magpie folklore, scoring a late goal at Roker Park to salvage a 3-3 draw and swinging on the net in celebration

In the starting line-up for United's European baptism against Feyenoord at Gallowgate in 1968, he featured as the club progressed in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup but didn't play in the two-legged Final success - celebrating his 28th birthday on the substitute's bench in Budapest.

Moving on to Blackburn Rovers in 1971,
John also played for Hartlepool United, Greenock Morton and Lancaster City, later working as a postman in Cockermouth.

Revealed to be suffering with Alzheimer's in 2017, a diagnosis of Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) followed - repeated head trauma that's now tragically associated with many footballers of his era.

Fundraiser concludes:

On This Day in History
4th December

Born Or Died:

1899 Charles William Spencer born, Washington, County Durham (1921-28)

Signed by United from local league football, half back Charlie was converted to a centre back at Gallowgate (although he'd actually begun his career as a goalkeeper).

Making his debut in a 2-1 home victory over Bolton in March 1922, the only goal of his Magpies career arrived against Stoke City at SJP just over a year later.

Capped twice by England in 1924 and 1925, Spencer played 34 times in United's 1926/27 championship-winning season but exited in summer 1928, joining Manchester United for £3,250.

After departing Old Trafford in in 1930, Spencer later served as player/manager of both Tunbridge Wells Rangers and Wigan Athletic, before taking charge of Grimsby Town between 1937 and 1951.

After a brief spell with Hastings United, Charlie took over at York City in November 1953. However he passed away barely three months into his tenure at the Minstermen.

1900 Christopher Swan born, Byker.
(1919-23)

Inside forward who joined United following World War 1, but struggled to hold down a first team place following his debut in a 0-1 reverse at Burnley in April 1920.

Departing for Stockport County on a free transfer, Chris later appeared for Hull City and Crystal Palace before ending his playing days with Scarborough in 1932.

Swan's death was recorded in Bournemouth during 1979.

1943 Les O'Neill born, East Hartford.
(1961-65)

Former pitman who began his playing career with New Hartley Juniors and joined United from Blyth Spartans.

Midfielder Les was a regular in the Magpies reserve side but made just one first senior appearance - a 5-2 loss at Portsmouth in October 1963.

Suffering a career-threatening injury that sidelined him for almost a year, Les left for  Darlington in search of first team football and later joined Bradford City.

However it was a five year spell with Carlisle United that brought O'Neill to prominence, his goals helping the Cumbrians gain promotion to Division One in 1973/74.

Les then scored at Stamford Bridge and Ayresome Park (twice) in Carlisle's opening two top-flight fixtures the following season.

A knee injury curtailed his career although he later turned out for Queen of the South.

Following his retirement from playing, Les became a milkman in Carlisle, returning to Brunton Park as a coach and also enjoying spells in charge of Penrith and Workington.

In 1991 former Carlisle team mate John Gorman recruited Les to his backroom staff at Swindon and he remained there until sacked in 1998 from the post of chief scout.

Les then scouted for Blackpool before linking up once again with John Gorman to oversee scouting duties for Wycombe Wanderers.

He later frequented the pro-celebrity golf circuit in Spain, along with fellow former Magpies Chris Waddle and Billy Rafferty - plus Stan Boardman. Calm down.

1962 Kevin Richardson born, Newcastle
(coach, 2011-22)

As a youngster, Kevin played for Montagu Boys Club in the West end of Newcastle but left as a teenager to join Everton.

The midfielder would enjoy a twenty year career with the Toffees, Watford, Arsenal, Real Sociedad (Spain), Aston Villa, Coventry City, Southampton, Barnsley and Blackpool - and also won a single senior England cap.

Backroom roles at the mackems (twice), Stockport County and Darlington followed before Kevin joined the Newcastle Academy coaching staff on a full time basis in 2011 - having worked with younger age groups since 2009.

Overseeing the U16 side, Richardson moved up to coach the U18s in early 2015 - after Dave Watson was promoted into the first team setup under Head Coach John Carver.

Watson subsequently returned to his U18 role, with Kevin assisting him - doubling up under Ben Dawson for the U23s, after Peter Beardsley was placed on gardening leave.

2019 found Richardson working with U18 Coach Neil Winskill and he remained at the club as a number of U23 coaches before he himself exited in October 2022.

Liverpool loanee Howard Gayle moved out of midfield and into the number nine shirt, while there was a first outing of the season for winger Paul Ferris.

The Addicks were inspired by big money signing Allan Simonsen, who scored a fine second goal.

Wind, rain, snow and hail made for miserable afternoon at Villa Park, with the onfield fare doing little to raise the temperature among fans.

Duncan Ferguson was to change all that however, getting on the end of a cross from Temuri Ketsbaia and out-muscling future Toon assistant boss Colin Calderwood to head in.

Completing a trio of future Magpie coaches, Alan Thompson appeared as a home sub and was then replaced himself, while Steve Stone remained on the bench.

Four second half goals made it a miserable day in South West London as defensive frailties once again undermined a promising first half display from Graeme Souness's side.

Laurent Robert, Ronny Johnsen, Titus Bramble and Shay Given all dropped clangers, making a tough job mission impossible and leaving United with just four points from six games.

2005 The draw for the Third Round of the FA Cup handed The Magpies a home tie against League Two strugglers Mansfield Town.

Ball number 27 was selected from the pot by Chelsea old boy Peter Osgood, while ex-mackem 'keeper (and Magpies coach) Jimmy Montgomery selected the Stags.

2006 Playing their final home league game of the year, Newcastle reserves were beaten 3-1 at Kingston Park by Middlesbrough -their first home defeat since April 2005.

After ten wins and eight draws, the table- topping Teessiders finally ended Lee Clark's side's run, despite United scoring first - thanks to a Carl Finnigan penalty.

2011 United were handed their first FA Cup Third Round home tie since since 2006 when paired with fellow Premier League side Blackburn Rovers in the draw.

Newcastle's four-match winning run came to an abrupt halt in South Wales, as just about everything went wrong in front of the BT Sport cameras.

The three-goal deficit was harsh on United as a combination of non-decisions from referee, Howard Webb and some bad luck undid us, but form also deserted the visitors.

Webb avoided penalising future Magpie Jonjo Shelvey for an intended head butt on Mathieu Debuchy and also overlooked three spot kick claims, but it was also a night to forget for Tim Krul - culpable for all the goals.

United's U21s qualified for the last 16 of the Checkatrade Trophy on penalty kicks against Macclesfield Town at SJP.

Elias Sorensen had given the Magpies a first half lead before Sol Campbell's Macclesfield Town side equalised five minutes from time.

That meant penalties which United won 5-3, Mo Sangare hitting the winning spot-kick.

2020 Newcastle's Premier League visit to Aston Villa was postponed after an outbreak of COVID-19 among the Magpies squad.

Following consultation with Public Health England, the club's Darsley Park training facility was closed until further notice.

Three squad members had tested positive before United's previous game at Crystal Palace and a further round of testing then added considerably to that tally.

At the 15th time of asking and a mere 195 days after they last collected maximum points, United finally ended their winless league run.

Magpies hero was Callum Wilson, who coolly collected a loose ball in the box before firing high into the unguarded Leazes goal on 40 minutes - spurious claims that future colleague Nick Pope had been impeded when losing possession rightly disproved by VAR.

1-0 up and with the finishing line in sight, the
Clarets looked to have claimed a point when Jay Rodriquez beat Martin Dubravka - only to be correctly ruled offside to almost audible relief.

The eruption of emotion at full time was truly memorable; home fans remaining in situ to salute the players who had finally taken a lead and retained it.
