Comeback
complete
Result:
Wolves U18s 2 Newcastle U18s 4
Newcastle's
U18 side were in the Black Country on Saturday, facing Wolves at
their Compton Park HQ.
United came close to opening the scoring after 13 minutes, Kacey Wooster
almost catching home 'keeper George Hardy off his line with a lob from
distance.
Making his first start at this level, Newcastle's Kyle Fitzgerald then
pinged a shot off the outside of the post from just inside the area with 24
minutes played.
The home side went ahead six minutes before half time, when a snap shot from
Mateus Mane ended up in the bottom corner of Will Anderson's goal.
A smart stop from the visiting 'keeper at his near post then prevented
striker Mane from doubling the lead just before the interval.
Winless in their last nine league games, Wolves went 2-0 up five minutes
after the resumption when a corner kick fell to Mason Stevens. His initial shot
was blocked by Anderson but Ollie Stafford converted the rebound.
That two goal advantage lasted less than 10 minutes though, before Jake
Durrant's cross from the United left was headed back across goal by Kyle
Fitzgerald for Alex O'Donovan to fire home from barely a yard out.
And the lead was wiped out with 12 minutes to play, O'Donovan setting Mo
Waddani free on the left and his centre slotted home by Fitzgerald - his
first Toon goal.
Waddani then thought he'd put his side ahead for the first time in the
match, only to see it ruled out by a raised assistant's flag.
Within seconds though the ball was in the Wolves net again, Wooster rounding
the 'keeper and Bjorn Marwa getting the final touch to send it into his own
net.
That came in the 85th minute and it was 4-2 soon after; Fitzgerald's driving
run doing the damage and Wooster making no mistake with his third goal in
two games.
Team: Anderson, Bloomer, Durrant, Johnson, Epia, Cogdon, Fitzgerald,
Harper, Wooster (Yeutembip 90+2), O'Donovan, Waddani (Lucas 90+2).
Subs n/u: Holland, Ndiweni, Gilligan.
Booked: Epia
The Magpies were forced to make changes from the side that defeated
Liverpool 3-1 last weekend, Logan Watts promoted to the U21s and Sam Alabi
and Michael Mills away on international duty with England.
That also resulted in a very youthful bench, with a debut at
this level for 15 year-old defender Lesecond Yeutembip, fresh from making
his England U15 bow.

The Mail

side who beat their Newcastle counterparts 5-2 on aggregate in the league
playoff final.
That came just days after Darren had made his senior debut as a substitute
against Arsenal in the Premier League at Highbury.
Signed by Sir Bobby Robson in a £2.5m deal, Ambrose made his United debut in a
reserve game against Manchester United at SJP and netted within half an
hour.
His senior bow for Newcastle came from the bench away at West Bromwich Albion on the final day
of the 2002/03 season.
The following September then saw Darren mark his home debut by scoring against
NAC Breda in a UEFA Cup tie, barely six minutes after coming on to replace
Craig Bellamy.
That came in the 89th minute and his two other goals that season - at Leicester
and Southampton - were 90th minute efforts.
However, the arrival of Graeme Souness as manager the following season saw
Ambrose drop down the pecking order, with a mid- season injury hardly helping
his cause.
Despite netting at Old Trafford and Craven Cottage on his return to the
side in the closing weeks of the season (adding to a spectacular Boxing Day
strike at Bolton), he was sold to Charlton in July
2005 for £1m.
Sent off at the mackems on his Addicks debut, Darren suffered relegation in May 2007 and was loaned back to
former club Ipswich Town in November
2008.
However, he returned to the Valley a month later and suffered another
relegation, this time down to League One - becoming a free agent at the end of
the season.
Joining Crystal Palace on a free transfer, Darren's time at Selhurst Park saw him in the
goalscoring form of his life, once netting in six successive matches.
Sadly the second administration in his career saw the Eagles exchange playoff hopes for a relegation battle - with the player himself admitting that
he felt "jinxed".
Narrow escapes from the dreaded drop came in both 2009/10 and 2010/11, with
Darren returning to Tyneside as Neil Warnock's side were beaten during our
"year out".
Warnock's subsequent departure to QPR was widely expected to see Ambrose
relocate to Loftus Road but no move was concluded and he remained to help
Palace enjoy a run to the League Cup semi-finals in 2011/12. That
included an eye-catching 2-1 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford
that featured an unstoppable long range strike by Darren at the Stretford End.
Exiting Selhurst Park in July 2012, Darren signed
for Birmingham City days after the appointment of
Toon old boy Lee Clark.
Having only made a handful of appearances for Blues, he went out on loan to
Greek side Apollon Smyrni in January 2014, scoring six times but
failing to prevent relegation.
A free agent once again, he
played for Colchester United in pre-season before re-joining Ipswich in
September 2014.
However, that
second spell at Portman Road was decimated by injury and he departed the
following year, signing for Colchester and marking his debut with a
goal
against Blackpool in August 2015.
Following one season with the U's, Darren retired to pursue
business interests including a barber's shop in Ipswich. He also worked as a pundit on
Sky Sports and matchday host at Selhurst Park.

2008
Rory Finneran born,
Manchester.
(2024-present)

Midfielder
who came through the Blackburn Rovers Academy and had the
distinction of being their youngest-ever senior debutant
when facing Cambridge United at the age of 15 years and
312 days in January 2024.
Joining United that summer a fee dictated by a tribunal,
the Irish youth international made his bow for the U18
side in a 1-1 home draw with Millwall in August 2024.
A first U21 outing the came the following January
against Gateshead in the National League Cup.
1893 William Bradley
born, Wardley.
(1914-27)

Goalkeeper who began his playing
career in local league football but was signed from Portsmouth at a cost of
£300.
Appearing in wartime league matches during the 1918/19 season, Bill's
competitive first team debut came in a 1-0 home win over Preston North End in
November 1919.
Acting as understudy to first-choice Jimmy Lawrence, United signed veteran
Sandy Mutch when Lawrence left SJP in 1922.
Bill appeared in United's FA Cup First Round victory over his former club
Portsmouth in the 1923/24 season but then saw Mutch play in all of the
following rounds as the club made it to their first Wembley final.
Mutch then injured himself at Aston Villa in a league game less than a week
before facing the same side in the final.
Bradley was simultaneously keeping goal for Newcastle reserves as they lost to South
Shields reserves in the final of the Newcastle Infirmary Cup at
Gallowgate.
That was actually his third reserve game in just four days - all at home
- following a
North Eastern League fixture on the Friday
and a Northumberland Senior Cup Final win over Blyth Spartans on the
Saturday.
Joining up with the first team squad at their pre-Wembley base in Harrow, Bradley's
place in the side wasn't confirmed until the day of the final, when
Mutch finally bowed to the inevitable and pulled out.
Bradley duly lined up against Villa in those pre-substitute
days and although reportedly "very shaky under fire to begin with"
later "turned out to be the hero of the game" as Newcastle
won 2-0.
Mutch then returned to the starting XI for the opening two games of the
following season, before Bradley became first choice for the remainder
of that campaign.
The acquisition of Willie Wilson then saw Bill drop down the pecking order once
more; exiting in 1927 to join Ashington, who at that time were playing in Third
Division North.
He later appeared for North Shields and joined their board of Directors
following his retirement, living in the town and running a newsagents
shop.

1980
Diego Antonio Gavilan
born, Ascunsion,
Paraguay.
(2000-04)
After the signings
of Kevin Gallacher
and Helder, Sir
Bobby Robson's first
long-term venture
into the transfer
market came when
this unproven winger
arrived in a £2m
deal from Cerro Porteno in
his native Paraguay.
Nicknamed "Sparrowhawk", Gavilan was a slightly-built wide player
who never really looked at home among the muck and bullets of the Premier
League - and even less so when appearing for the reserves at the likes of
Bedlington, Blyth and Whitley Bay.
His senior debut came as a substitute in the closing stages of a 2-2 draw at
the mackems in February 2000 and what proved to be his only senior goal came against
Coventry City at SJP
two months later.
Just two first team appearances followed in the following season and after
failing to adapt to life in the UK he went on loan to Mexican side Universidad in December 2001.
At the end of that season Gavilan appeared for Paraguay at the World Cup Finals, making
one start and two appearances from the bench in South
Korea.
A wages dispute with Universidad then saw him heading back to Newcastle while
seeking further loan moves and a switch to Brazilian side Internacional was
quickly concluded.
Granted a free transfer by Newcastle in January 2004, Gavilan moved to
Argentina two years later with Newell's Old Boys (an earlier switch to Italian
side Udinese having ended with him returning to Internacional).
Selected for a second World Cup Finals that year, he was never called off the
bench in Paraguay's three group games, including a narrow defeat by England in
Frankfurt.
A return to Brazil came in 2007 with Gremio and later moves
in the same country took him to Flamengo and Portuguesa.
In 2009 Gavilan surfaced in Argentina with Independiente, before yet another
switch, this time to Olimpia in his native Paraguay.
Diego's South
American odyssey
then took another
turn when signing
for Peruvian club
Juan Aurich before
heading back to his
home city briefly in
2012 with
Independiente.
Following his
retirement from
playing in 2012,
Gavilan began
studying for his
coaching
qualifications and
trained young
footballers at a
school in Ascunsion.
A coaching career in Paraguay soon followed, taking him to Deportivo Capiata,
Sportivo Trinidense, Sol de America and back to Deportivo Capiata.
2019 then saw him venture to Brazil, when taking charge of the Pelotas club.
July 2023 saw him in
charge of Paraguay
top tier side Cerro
Porteno.

1990 Ben Tozer born,
Plymouth.
(2008-11)
 In
one of his last acts as Newcastle boss, Sam Allardyce sanctioned a £1m move
for Ben from Swindon Town in January 2008.
The defender made six senior starts and one sub appearance while at
the County Ground, the deal representing good business for Swindon, who had
signed him barely six months earlier from Plymouth's youth side.
Appearing for our academy and reserve sides, Ben captained the reserves to
success against Blyth Spartans in the Northumberland Senior Cup that season.
He was then named on the bench
by Kevin Keegan for the Premier League season closer at Everton (whom he'd been
on trial with, before opting to join Newcastle).
However, a
cartilage problem sustained in the early weeks of the following season required
surgery and sidelined him until April 2009, when returning
for the
reserves.
After featuring in pre-season, Ben's senior United debut came in the League Cup
defeat at Peterborough in September 2009.
His second appearance - and first in the league - then arrived in the
home win over Doncaster the following month, following the dismissal of
defender Zurab Khizanishvili, Tozer appearing in the 87th minute.
Ben was then an unused substitute for an FA Cup Third Round tie in January 2010
against his hometown team and former club, Plymouth Argyle.
With no prospect of first team football at SJP following our promotion,
Ben appeared for Yeovil Town and Leyton Orient in
pre-season, but no loan followed.
Borrowed by League Two Northampton Town in September 2010, he debuted in a famous
League
Cup win
over Liverpool at Anfield.
Scoring his first senior goal on his home debut (against Bradford City), a red
card against Hereford United however ended his month-long loan spell
prematurely. Tozer
returned to Sixfields in November 2010 for the remainder of the season and then
made the move permanent in June 2011, following his release by Newcastle.
Loaned to
Colchester United in November
2013, Ben
returned to Northampton before
departing in the summer of
2015.
Later serving Yeovil Town, Newport County and Cheltenham Town,
Tozer joined National
League Wrexham in August 2021 and captained them to a
Football League return two years later.
He moved on to N ational League side Forest Green Rovers
in June 2024.

2000 Meanwhile, Mr

The club had won a small victory in blocking attempts by the SOS group to call
Kevin Keegan as a witness - the then-England boss submitting written evidence
instead.
And the verdict was to see Blackburne side with the club, whom he ruled had
acted in a "fair and reasonable" manner.
In a not-unrelated development, the club appointed Rogan Taylor of the

Red faces all round for United at Fratton Park, after Craig Bellamy
had shot past ex-Magpie Shaka Hislop to net for a fourth successive game.
With a minute of normal time remaining, the ball broke for fellow Newcastle
striker Lomana LuaLua to fire home.
That he was able to score was due to our collective inability to defend corners,
but his presence on the pitch at all was due to clerical carelessness - given
that he was on loan from Newcastle to Portsmouth.
Despite being common practice with other clubs, no clause preventing him facing
us was inserted into the loan deal by United.
The Premier League subsequently altered their own legislation to automatically
exclude loan players from facing their parent clubs.
