Badge re-imagined

NUFC have announced plans to alter the club crest from the current version, with an initial consultation exercise in the form of an online survey for ST holders and members.

That dropped into inboxes on Friday, with a cut-off point for completed entries of next Friday (May 16th),

A subsequent survey is promised following a fan workshop staged at SJP and online this Wednesday (May 14th).

Premier League:
Chelsea (h)

This Sunday sees the Magpies play their penultimate PL home game of the season, hosting the Blues in a Noon kick-off that's live on TNT Sports.

Newcastle go in search of their sixth successive home league victory since losing 1-2 to Fulham in February.

They've won 11 times SJP in the PL this season - matching the 2023/24 total. They last managed 12 in 2022/23, but before that one has to go back to the 2002/03 campaign, when racking up 15.

If you're anywhere near Waterstones at the Monument, ex-Magpie Paul Ferris is signing copies of his new book, "Once Upon a Toon" from 11am.

(We'll have copies of the book to give away next week).

NUFC confirm that all home ticket holders entering SJP between 10am and 11am will receive a voucher for a free drink that must be redeemed by 11.30am.

Team:
Lewis Hall and Matt Targett remain unavailable while Jamaal Lascelles is back in full training. The issues that affected Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier at Brighton aren't expected to affect their availability for Sunday.

Joelinton has returned and may yet play some part in the remaining three games of the season, spending time in Brazil and then having a knee injection in Barcelona.

Coach Jason Tindall returns after a one game touchline ban prompted by racking up three yellow cards.

CFC: Wesley Fofana, Omari Kellyman and Christopher Nkunku remain out, while Marc Guiu is doubtful.

Ahead of their visit to SJP, a 1-0 home win over Swedish side Djurgaardens on Thursday completed a 5-1 aggregate success and booked a spot in the Europa Conference League Final.

A 2-1 success at Fulham in Chelsea's last PL away game ended a winless sequence on the road in that competition stretching to eight games (five losses, three draws).

Referee:
John Brooks - fourth posting of the season for the Leicestershire official and a second in the PL after the 1-0 victory over Arsenal. Brooks also took charge of the 2-0 Carabao Cup success at Arsenal and the Final at Wembley.

Newcastle U18s conclude their league season on Saturday , when they host North Section champions Manchester City in a 10.30am kick-off at Little Benton.

The visitors arrive having won 21 of their 23 league games this season, including a 7-1 victory over the Magpies in Manchester back in November.

Chris Moore's side are currently fifth in the table, two points ahead of the mackems - who end their season later on Saturday away at runners-up Manchester United.

City's season continues when they meet South Section winners Aston Villa with the national title at stake - Villa defeated them 3-1 in the FA Youth Cup Final on Monday.

Senior Cup warning

This season's Northumberland Senior Cup Final between Morpeth Town and Heaton Stannington takes place at Gallowgate on Wednesday night, May 14th.

That's a 7.30pm kick-off and spectators can gain access via turnstiles at the East Stand. Prices are £8 adults, £4 concessions and £2 U18s.

Be aware that payment is strictly cash only - no cards or any other payment method will be accepted.

2025/26:
Celtic (a) on sale now

Newcastle have confirmed a second pre-season kickabout, at Scottish Champions Celtic on Saturday July 19th.

That's a 3pm kick-off and the Magpies have been given 7,200 places, which are now on sale to 2025/26 season ticket holders with 8 points or more.

As was the case for March's Wembley visit, away travel groups won't be in use and seats are individually selected from a seating plan. That was visible on a smartphone but some desktop users report that they struggled to see it.

It's also worth repeating that more than one section is on sale, but in order to see the others, you need to click on the arrow to the right of the screen.

NB: some seats in areas 118 and 119 in the usual away corner have restricted views due to a pillar. These look to be included in the 1,200 that NUFC will be selling for a slightly cheaper price after the full price ones sell out.

NUFC state that this game will be excluded from the usual away ticket transfer scheme.

Prices: £25 adults, over 65s £17, 13-16s £17, U13s £12.

(There's no relevant scheduled rail work that weekend).

This will be United's first game in the East end of Glasgow since a 1-2 loss in August 2004. That was the third visit of the Premier League era, following a 0-2 reverse in July 1999 and a 1-1 draw on a red-hot day in August 1995.

The most recent meeting of the two sides took place at SJP during August 2007, ending in a 4-1 win for the Magpies.

For Eddie Howe it's a belated opportunity to lead a side out at Parkhead, having rejected the chance to become Celtic boss during 2021 - supposedly after failing to reach an agreement on the appointment of his backroom staff.

Premier League:
Arsenal (a) ticket update

NUFC confirm that tickets for the Premier League fixture at the Emirates will come in digital format, to be sent out via email on Monday May 12th.

Ticket forwarding will be open at Thursday May 15th at 4.30pm and close on Sunday May 18th at 11.30am.

If you are intending to forward your ticket (limit of two per season) then don't download the ticket, otherwise it will need to be reissued - which is a pain in the a**e....

The latest book from author Spencer Vignes is a biography of Chilean international Jorge ("George") Robledo, who arrived at St.James' Park from Barnsley along with his brother Eduardo ("Ted") during 1949.

Interviewing family members and their contemporaries, Spencer tells their largely unknown story, culminating in George's FA Cup Final winning goal for United in 1952.

Born Or Died:

1934 Bill Punton born, Glenkinchie, Scotland. (1954-58)

Signed from Portadown for £6,000 in February 1954 to understudy Bobby Mitchell, Bill debuted in a 4-3 home win over Manchester City two months later.

Thirteenth man for United's 1955 FA Cup Final win over Manchester City in pre-substitute days, Bill's second senior game didn't come until September 1955.

Featuring sporadically during that season and the following two, his only senior Magpies goal came against West Bromwich Albion at SJP on Boxing Day 1956.

Overlooked following a defeat by Blackpool in November 1957, Punton joined Southend United the following summer in a swap deal involving John McGuigan.

Within a year he'd signed for Norwich City and became a great favourite at Carrow Road, scored in their 1962 League Cup Final win (when it was played over two legs).

Sold to Sheffield United for £7,500 in November 1966, his final transfer took him to Scunthorpe United - where his boots were cleaned by a young Kevin Keegan.

Appointed player/coach of Yarmouth Town in 1969, Punton retired from playing at the age of 40 in 1974 and was then appointed manager of the Bloaters.

Ending a 21 year association with Yarmouth when taking over Diss Town, he led them to FA Vase glory in 1994 before later scouting for Lowestoft Town.

Becoming BBC Radio Norfolk's local football pundit, Bill spent his 76th birthday at Wembley, analysing Wroxham's 1-6 loss to Whitley Bay in the FA Vase Final.

1946 Ian Mitchell born, Falkirk, Scotland.
(1970-71)

Forward who attracted the attention of a host of clubs when impressing for Scottish Junior side Woodburn Athletic in the early 1960s, turning down Rangers, Hibernian, Hearts, Spurs and Manchester United in order to join Dundee United in July 1962.

A schoolboy international signed on amateur forms before turning professional in 1963, Mitchell made over 300 appearances in the next decade, scoring 133 goals and winning recognition at U23 level for Scotland.

Scoring against Barcelona in his side's first European adventure of 1966, he featured in both legs of the Fairs Cup tie against Newcastle during the 1969/70 campaign.

Becoming a Magpie in July 1970 at a cost of £50K, Mitchell's first outing for the club was at Tannadice in a pre-season friendly that his new employers won 2-1.

A competitive debut came four months later, coming off the bench during the away leg of the Fairs Cup tie against Pecsi Dozsa.

Three starts and one further substitute appearance followed that season, with Mitchell's only goal coming in an FA Cup tie against Ipswich Town at Gallowgate.

Failing to feature in the side during the opening weeks of the 1971/72 season, Ian returned to Tannadice in October of that year, in an exchange deal with Alex Reid.

Playing on for the Tangerines until his release in September 1973, Mitchell had a brief stay at Falkirk before joining Brechin City, playing at Glebe Park between 1974 and his retirement three years later.

Living and working in Dundee thereafter, he sadly died in April 1996 after a long illness.

Memories of Mitchell's time as an Arab were invoked in January 2013 when 16 year old John Souttar made his senior club debut - breaking Ian's 50 year record as Dundee United's youngest ever player.

1959 David Barton born, Bishop Auckland. (1975-83)

Central defender who came through the junior and reserve ranks at SJP and made a winning first team debut in January 1978 away at Leeds United.

Remaining at the club following relegation, Barton began to force his way into the side in the 1978/79 season, scoring on the first day of the season in a 2-1 loss at Millwall.

The 1979/80 season saw David form a partnership with Stuart Boam as United topped the table at the turn of the year.

However, hopes of promotion nose-dived as the team lost form and Barton was left out - scoring an awful own goal at home to Watford hardly helping his cause.

Fitness problems saw David struggle to hold down a place under new manager Arthur Cox and what proved to be his last game came at Crystal Palace in May 1982.

Out of the side following the arrival of Jeff Clarke, loan spells at Blackburn Rovers and Darlington the were followed by a free transfer move to the latter in 1983.

Within a year though, injury had forced Barton into retirement and United sent a strong side to Feethams for his benefit match after gaining promotion.

David played on at non-league level with Blyth Spartans and Coundon. 1990 saw him managing Newton Aycliffe, while he later served as Spennymoor United assistant boss.

His son Gavin played as striker in the Northern League, appearing for both Esh Winning and Crook Town.

1962 Death of George Jobey, 76.
(1906-13)

Defender who played for United in both 1911 FA Cup Final games - a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace followed by a 0-1 loss in the replay at Old Trafford.

Later joining Arsenal, Jobey was the first home goalscorer at the newly-opened Highbury in September 1913.

1964 Frank Pingel born, Resskov, Denmark. (1989)

With Newcastle struggling for goals and in a relegation battle, manager Jim Smith sold 'keeper Dave Beasant to Chelsea in January 1989 in order to strengthen his squad.

Danish duo Frank Pingel and Bjorn Kristensen arrived from AGF Aarhus on trial and while a deal for the latter would take some time to conclude, striker Pingel's deal was made permanent for £260K after just one day on Tyneside.

Although supposedly a target man, Pingel failed to gel in a ground-breaking Danish /Brazilian strike force with Mirandinha.

Debuting from the bench in a 1-3 loss at Aston Villa, Pingel's sole competitive goal came at home to Liverpool, when a cross diverted off the back of his head.

He also netted in a friendly match at Boston United, but added little to the relegation fight and was invariably substituted.

Returning to Denmark with Brondby that summer in a £200K deal, Pingel later played for 1860 Munich (Germany), Bursaspor (Turkey), Fenerbahce (Turkey) and Lille (France).

Winning 11 full international caps while playing in Turkey and France, Pingel made one final move, returning to Aarhus Fremad in 1995. Later coaching at the club, he then acted as their masseur.

PS: Frank returned to England in 1999 and was at Wembley to watch Newcastle in the FA Cup Final. Although we lost, he had a good day - having travelled over to cheer on the winners, Manchester United.

1992 Dan Burn born, Ashington.
(2022-present)

Newcastle's defensive rebuild in the January 2022 transfer window brought former Magpie junior Dan back to Tyneside in a £13m move from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Standing six foot seven inches tall, Burn was at United's Academy from the age of 11 until 13.

Joining Darlington aged 17 after playing for New Hartley Juniors, Blyth Town and Blyth Spartans, he made his Quakers debut in League Two during December 2009 - remaining there after their relegation to the Conference.

Scouted by Premier League Fulham, he agreed a move to Craven Cottage in April 2011 amid bids from both Everton and Alan Pardew's Newcastle.

Loaned out to League One Yeovil Town and Championship side Birmingham City in successive seasons Dan was recalled by Fulham for a top-flight bow in January 2014.

Playing on for the Cottagers following their relegation that season, he left Craven Cottage under freedom of contract in the summer of 2016, signing for fellow Championship side Wigan Athletic.

Suffering relegation and promotion during three seasons as a Latic, Dan completed a move to Chris Hughton's Brighton in 2018 - but was loaned back to Wigan.

Burn became a regular starter in the Premier League from the start of the 2019/20 season - appearing at centre half and left back.

Debuting for Newcastle in a 1-0 home victory over Aston Villa during February 2022, Burn's impact along with the other mid season signings was such that his new side pulled well clear of the drop zone.

He established himself in the back four at left back in the successful 2022/23 season and scored a memorable goal against Leicester City at Gallowgate in the Carabao Cup en route to the Final.

Dan kept his place in defence for the 2023/24 season, initially at left back before switching to centre half after a catalogue of injuries in that position.

He also netted memorably against PSG at Gallowgate in the Champions League and twice against former side Fulham: in the PL at SJP and FA Cup at Craven Cottage.

But they paled into insignificance compared to a monumental week in March 2025 for Dan.

Scoring the opener in the Carabao Cup Final victory against Liverpool, he was back at Wembley hours later for his international debut - starting for England in a World Cup qualifier against Albania.

Four days after the end of their league season, United faced French opposition at SJP, in a friendly staged as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations.

The Magpies included winger Hugh Cameron, following his acquisition from Torquay United.

The game kicked off at 6pm on a Wednesday evening, with the visitors including five French internationals in their line-up.

Fellow French side Strasbourg were due to face United, but bad weather grounded their flight. Rennes - already in the UK for games at Huddersfield, Blackpool and Carlisle - stepped in and travelled to Tyneside.

Team: Fairbrother, Cowell, Batty, Harvey, Brennan, Crowe, Walker, Taylor, Robledo, Hannah, Cameron.

1951 Jackie Milburn was absent from the Magpies side, scoring the winner for England in a 2-1 defeat of Argentina at Wembley - less than a fortnight after netting a brace there in the FA Cup Final win over Blackpool.

A testimonial organised to benefit former player and manager Joe Harvey saw him take charge of Newcastle once more, facing Don Revie's select XI.

Former Magpie Malcolm Macdonald broke off from filming BBC's  Superstars programme to appear, while future Toon bosses Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness arrived from Celtic and Middlesbrough respectively.

Also coming from Ayresome Park for the night were John Craggs, and David Mills while Bob Moncur journeyed from Carlisle.

Newcastle fielded a full-strength side and had an injury scare when goalkeeper Mick Mahoney had to go off with a head injury.

However he was deemed fit enough to return for Newcastle's final home league game against Aston Villa five days later.

Veteran defender David Craig was unable to appear for the Magpies due to fitness problems.

The season ended in the sunshine with United snoozing (quite literally in the case of boss Willie McFaul on the visitors bench).

A meaningless game was rather more charged off the field though, with "scabs" chants directed at home fans - a reference to the conduct of a section of Nottinghamshire miners in the strike of 1984-85.

A post-match pitch invasion by away fans saw their advance on the Trent End halted by a cordon of police horses and seats ripped out and thrown on the pitch from the section of the Executive stand United fans occupied.

Meanwhile other Toon fans became upwardly mobile, climbing the floodlight pylon that was sited on the away terrace.

Having already sealed promotion and the First Division title, United signed off in memorable style in front of an incredulous SJP.

Brian Kilcline and Barry Venison collected the trophy before kick-off and the Magpies then proceeded to christen their new Asics shirts with six goals in front of the Gallowgate End.

A seventh followed after the break as Andy Cole continued his hat trick and the whole ground rocked to the strains of the "gets the ball, scores a goal" song for some time.

Rather less tuneful was Sir John Hall's post -match rendition of "We are the Champions" caught by TV microphones.

Also on hand to join in the celebrations were local band Lindisfarne, who performed from a lofty perch above the Leazes End as the new Sir John Hall Stand began to take shape.

A downcast Alan Shearer blamed himself for not securing the three points, after having his 82nd minute penalty saved as we stumbled to our 15th draw of the season.

Boos rang out at the end - presumably they would have been cheers if Jones had dived the wrong way for Al's kick - on a depressing day when players seemed to lack any self-belief, which was echoed in the stands.

The players were misguidedly sent out on a painful lap of "honour" with most of the 52,000 having already left the ground as hopes of a Champions League place faded.
