|Where Were We?
This page is very much a work-in-progress. It attempts to arm you with statistics that combat the tired accusation levelled at United fans: "Where Were You When You Were Sh*t?". True, 50,000 weren't watching us on wet Wednesday's against Wrexham in 1979 (they'd have a job with capacity in the thirty thousands) but there were still very healthy attendances watching some of the worst football imaginable. True, there are a few skeletons lurking in the St. James' cupboards.
Usually fans of other clubs will idly toss a random figure at you as proof positive that Newcastle used to "average under 10,000" and that we're just a bunch of glory-hunters. Eventually we hope to give an honest and factual appraisal of United's attendances but until then here's a few immediate put-downs for fans of other clubs who pluck figures out of the air. We could do with a bit of help on this one so please send us anything you unearth to firstname.lastname@example.org:
