With no U21 Premier League game scheduled this week, Peter Beardsley's side hosted Canadians FC Edmonton at Little Benton on Friday afternoon.

The team from Alberta are in preparation for the new North American Soccer League season and arrived on Tyneside after wins in Scotland over teams from Airdrieonians and Patrick Thistle

United went ahead in the 10th minute when striker Luke Charman latched on to a low Callum Williams centre from the right and shot home.
That was the signal for the visitors to up their game; former Magpie Tomi Ameobi firing wide on 21 minutes before Sainey Nyassi headed just over soon after.

A quick break just after the half hour led to a second Newcastle goal, Dan Laidler crossing from the left and Charman's neat dummy allowing Callum Roberts to pick his spot from just inside the area.

Edmonton continued to look dangerous and Ameobi exploited the lack of an offside flag eight minutes before the break to convert a Daryl Fordyce pass.

The second half saw both teams make a clutch of replacements, with youngster Mackenzie Heaney
(pictured above)
making a good impression on his U21 bow. Linking up well with fellow U18 regular Callum Smith, Heaney shot into the side netting and picked up a loose ball before striking the goal frame in the 69th minute with the 'keeper beaten.

Striker Sadi Jalali headed home an equaliser for his hometown club on 73 minutes and United fought a rearguard action in the closing stages as Edmonton looked to maintain their 100% record on tour.

However they were unable to supply a winner, with appeals that the ball crossed the goal line during one almighty scramble in the six yard box waved away.
