Saturday saw Newcastle's second string in friendly action at Whitley Park against their Professional Development League opponents (a step below the Premier League 2 that the hosts play in).

The Magpies went ahead on 11 minutes when striker Yannick Toure rounded the visiting 'keeper and fired into the net - an almost instant reply from the visitors ruled out for an earlier offside flag.

Clear-cut chances for either side were in short supply, but Peruvian Rodrigo Vilca worked an opening in the 20th minute and shot narrowly wide.

Clad in a curious pink strip, the Blades levelled with a breakaway effort from midfielder George Broadbent on 68 minutes but it was Newcastle who had the better chances to win it in the closing stages.

A goalbound header from Jude Swailes following a 79th minute corner was cleared, while fellow defender Ludwig Francillette almost directed Stan Flaherty's deflected free kick into the net in added time.

There was an incident-free 45 minute outing from the bench for Magpies striker Florent Indalecio.
