Ryan Fraser found Miguel Almiron with a header towards the left hand
side of the Palace area and the Paraguayan got away from Scott Dann to
deliver an immediate cross that Callum Wilson fed back to Jonjo Shelvey,
who was lurking just outside the D in a central position.
21 mins Dutch midfielder Jairo Riedewald supplied an emphatic finish from similar range to Shelvey at the other end of the pitch, his effort deflecting off Ciaran Clark to give Karl Darlow no chance. 1-1
25 mins Gary Cahill was left unchecked as he headed in a free kick swung in from the Palace right by Eberechi Eze. That dead ball situation had been caused by an illegal checking of Jordan Ayew by Jamal Lewis. 1-2

Steve Bruce said:
"I was pleased with the performance, we had an awkward 15
minutes where we’ve conceded two goals from a mistake and set-piece,
but apart from that, I couldn’t be more pleased with how we went
about our work.
"I think we’ve had 20 attempts on goal and two, three, four, five in
the first half when we should have been more clinical.
"As often in the Premier League, it's defining moments. Apart from that 10-15 minute spell, we had the better chances and should have taken something from the game.
"Crystal Palace do what they do and go back to defend deep so you have to prise them open.We had Ryan Fraser playing at right-back by the end to try and break them down but it was not enough.
"I said about a month ago after Sheffield United, we are going to try
to change. The players had been comfortable for a long time. We are trying to
change. It's what I want to do and I think the players are enjoying it.
Roy Hodgson commented:
Despite going ahead after just 71 seconds, Newcastle saw their
winless home streak extend to five games at a wet and windy Gallowgate on Tuesday night.
