Goals

35 mins Lee Dong-gyeong was allowed to advance unimpeded over the halfway line, finding Kim Jin-gyu out to his left approaching the United area and nobody occupying the right back slot . The Jeonbuk Hyundai striker shot past Nick Pope at his near post from just outside the six yard box.

His goal celebration was reportedly inspired by netting against "a big fish", by impersonating one. Initially wriggling on the pitch he was then caught and displayed by his team mates. 0-1

Half time: TKL 1 Newcastle 0

Full time: TKL 1 Newcastle 0

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"It was a really good test for us. Very tough conditions.

"We are disappointed to lose because after the second half performance, I thought we should have got something out of the game.

"The K-League's fitness levels are mid-season and you could tell they had that sharpness and experience of playing in this heat.

"The first half we started well and then faded in terms of our attacking intent. You want tough games and we will have got a load out of it physically which is what pre-season is for."

"We want to win and score goals but the most important thing is the Aston Villa game."

On Joe Willock:

"I don't have a major update yet but it didn't look great on the pitch.

"But at this moment, it doesn't look like a major, major injury. Fingers crossed it's not, because Joe has suffered enough. Hopefully he's OK."

On Park:

"I thought he did well. Not an easy situation to come into the game because there's a lot of expectation on him.

"For someone so young, I thought he handled it really well. And you can see he's got this ability when he goes one on one to chop the defender.

"He's got a really good body feint, and I was really, really pleased with him. So he can be really happy with his performance today."

Park added:

"I thought it'd be great to make my debut here at Big Bird, (nickname of the Suwon Stadium) and the coach gave me a great opportunity. He didn't really give me any specific orders. He just told me where to be on offense.

"My biggest strength is dribbling. I tried to show what I do best when I stepped onto the pitch. I’m glad the moment I was aiming for came out.

"I wanted to entertain fans here tonight, and I am glad things worked out well. I don't usually hear fans' chants during matches, but for some reason, I was able to hear them tonight. They made me feel more confident.

"When I joined the team, I really felt that the players were physically and athletically perfect. I realized I need to build more strength through additional weight training. I want to adapt to the team quickly and work hard so I can make my EPL debut as soon as possible.”

On the possibility of facing Tottenham's Son in Seoul on Sunday:

"I've never met Heung-min before. When I do get a chance, I will tell him I am a huge fan of his."

Howe pre-game press conference quotes:

On Alexander Isak:

"He is still our player. He’s contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that’s not in my full control.’

"We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club. My wish is that he stays and we see him playing again next year.’

"I’ve been travelling and today we’ve been working on the training for this afternoon. With these trips, they are always so intense. Of course, I’m in contact with the people I need to be in contact with back at home, but it’s very minimal contact when you’re away."

On new signings:

"It is an important time for us. There is lots to take in. We have to bring the right type of player in. We should in no way act out of character and should work how we always have in the window. That is in a strategic way.

"If the right player isn’t available to us for the right price, then we can't do the deals. Everything has to fall in line. We are looking to add depth and quality to the areas that we have identified.

"Fingers crossed we can get deals done."

On Sven Botman:

"We didn’t think it was a serious injury at the time and we've had that confirmed with a scan.

"He won’t play tomorrow.  He could play against Tottenham on Sunday, but possibly not.

"We hope he’ll be available for the double header at St James’ Park
(on August 8th and 9th)."

On new signing Seung-soo Park:

"I think it's slightly unclear what's going to happen short term with him - we're going to have to make an assessment on where we see him fitting in the best currently.

"We've had only a very short term impression, one or two training sessions. It's been very positive so far - he seems like a very good person, fundamentally, and it's all new experiences for him but I sure he'll do very, very well.

"We're very keen to look at this is a future market for us,
signing a similar profile of player, so this is hopefully the start.

"I'll do everything I can to try to get him on the pitch (in Suwon) because I think that'll be important for him and of course everyone that wants to see him play. I'll certainly do my best.

"We've got lots of information we'll be giving him but I think it'll just be a case of go out and play his normal game and that will be good enough."

They Said

Usually the boss of K League Ulsan HD, Kim Pan-gon said:

We only had yesterday to explain our game plans to the team and did a brief rehearsal, and the players did an excellent job. I realized just how smart and talented our Korean players are.

"Newcastle applied really good pressure early, but our players handled that really well. That's one of the strengths for our Korean players.

"It is a great experience for our players to be able to play against a good team like Newcastle. It is also a privilege to be able to face a European powerhouse on behalf of the K League. The K League plays with prestigious European clubs every year.

"When I was in Hong Kong, I played these games two or three times a year. It was a match against famous teams such as FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Manchester United.

"It's a great motivation for the players. It is also an opportunity to give fans more fun in soccer. The Korea Professional Football Federation and Coupang helped me a lot. They made it very comfortable. I hope to continue playing against good teams in Europe in the future."

On New Magpie Park:

"I've only heard about Park Seung-soo. Seeing him in person, he is quite fast and has good dribbling ability; he is a natural player. If he develops a bit more, he could become the next Son Heung-min."

Insert your own pun about fast food orders

On the whiteboard his side used during the game:

"I asked Gamst (aka coach Kim In-jik) to prepare a whiteboard. It's a part that was taken care of so that fans could enjoy it more.

On pre-match shouts of "Kim Pan-gon out" from disgruntled fans of his current side:

"I didn't hear that. If I had, I would have accepted it as criticism from Ulsan fans. I am sorry that such a voice came out at the festival."

Korean wor

Wednesday saw Newcastle suffer their third successive friendly loss of this pre-season, beaten by a Korean select side at a sweltering Suwon World Cup Stadium.

Making three changes from the side that had begun the 2-3 defeat to Arsenal in Singapore 72 hours before, United quickly threatened the Koreans - Lewis Miley's cross from the right diverted off target by Anthony Gordon.

The home side threatened soon after when current K-League top scorer Lee Jin-woo sent a low effort from the edge of the box wide of Nick Pope's goal.

After that though, there was little in the way of coherent attacking from either side until a drinks break on the half hour: desirable with temperatures touching 33 degrees at kick-off - three degrees hotter than in Singapore and noticeably more humid.

Anthony Elanga wasn't far away with a looping effort from Emil Krafth's right wing centre before the K-Leaguers went ahead in the 35th minute when Kim Jin-gyu beat Pope at his near post.

Newcastle made no interval changes, while the K League made eight alterations but the contest remained dreary for the most part, the visitors badly lacking up front.

An equaliser looked likely five minutes after the resumption from a replica of the home goal; Elanga pressing forward and playing in William Osula, who went for power and saw his effort blocked by the trailing leg of recently-arrived goalkeeper Kim Kyung-min.

Save for the pre-match and half time performances of K-pop combo IVE though, the biggest crowd reaction of the evening came when local lad Park Seung-soo made his Toon bow from the bench; replacing a clearly frustrated Osula who had squared up to an opponent seconds earlier.

Park's efforts livened up United and they pressed the domestic side back in search of an equaliser - captain Jamaal Lascelles twice directing headers wide.

The mantra remains that results don't matter in pre-season; minutes in the legs etc. and for six of the players to complete the full game will have done wonders for their BMI. Global warming may be changing the UK climate but we'll struggle to replicate these conditions at Gallowgate anytime soon.

For all of the perspiration and energy-sapping effort though, this team currently has the feel of a chart-topping band touring without their lead singer.

Eddie Howe suffered a further injury blow in the final seconds of normal time, Joe Willock staying down after a tackle and leaving the field on a stretcher in obvious discomfort with what appeared to be an ankle issue. Like an all day buffet, he's got enough on his plate already.....
