Stats

17 year-old forward Kacey Wooster and 18 year-old midfielder Baran Yildiz struck their first U21 goals on what was their public bow at this level. They had reportedly featured in last week's behind-closed-doors game against Hull City U21s.

United's trialist was confirmed as 17 year-old Raymond Offor from Irish side Shelbourne. The Dublin-born central defender is an international colleague of Magpie midfielder Rory Finneran.

Standing at 6 foot 5 inches, Offor was seldom tested in the air as the hosts won few set pieces in the opposition half but looked comfortable in possession and covered the ground quick enough.

Missing from the Newcastle line-up was last season's goalscorer Johnny Emerson, currently recuperating after a hernia operation.

U21 players Sean Neave, Anthony Munda and Alfie Harrison were with the senior squad in Asia.

Following the departure of U21 coach Diarmuid O'Carroll, assistant Robbie Stockdale looked to be in charge of the side, with goalkeeping coach Tony Caig also present.

Ex-Magpie Matty Pattison was on the South Shields staff while former Toon reserves Dan Ward and Kyle Crossley didn't feature - the former playing for the first XI 24 hours before and the latter set to be sidelined for some time following an injury sustained in pre-season.

Newcastle U21s were back in friendly action on Sunday, returning to the First Cloud Arena to face National League North side South Shields in their second pre-season kickabout.

The corresponding game had ended 1-1 a year ago, but the hosts fielded a weakened line-up this season after sending a full-strength side to Hartlepool United 24 hours earlier.

United went ahead in the fourth minute when Leo Shahar's ball down the right touchline found Trevan Sanusi and his low cross allowed Joe Brayson to fire past the Mariners' trialist goalkeeper.

Brayson and Garang Kuol came close to extending the lead, while home defender Brayden Reid thumped an attempted clearance off the frame of his own goal.

It was 2-0 seven minutes after the break; Shahar playing in substitute Kyle Fitzgerald and his low pull back from the right hand byline tapped in by fellow replacement, Kacey Wooster.

A goalkeeping error led to Turkish youngster Baran Yildiz knocking the ball into an empty net from the edge of the box to put the Magpies three ahead on 76 minutes - a scoreline that began to reflect the dominance that the visitors had enjoyed all afternoon.

Another defensive mix-up then saw Wooster get his second in the 81st minute; home players looking for an offside flag that never came as Yildiz robbed Logan Robinson on the edge of his own area.

Sanusi made it 5-0 after 87 minutes; rewarded for his persistence after his first effort was smothered and winning the race to the loose ball before slotting home.
