Teams

Goals

3 mins Kevin Danso dispossessed Jacob Murphy deep in the United's half and Brennan Johnson took possession. Advancing towards goal he hit a low shot from the edge of the box that deflected off Dan Burn and beyond the diving Nick Pope. Brennan replicated Son's "camera" celebration. 0-1

38 mins Joelinton and Bruno exchange passes as they broke over halfway and Gordon continued the attack as Bruno dashed goalwards down the right hand channel. Gordon switched play to the left, playing in Harvey Barnes.

Reaching the box, he cut inside in trademark style to elude Pedro Porro before hitting a rising right-footed shot that beat Antonin Kinsky via his near post. An absolute beauty.

Full time: Spurs 1 Newcastle 1

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"Another really competitive game. Quite strong both teams in the sense of some good challenges.

"A very Premier League like game which is again what you want at this stage. We're building and I think it was an improved performance again from us.

"Good response to a difficult opening to the game. I thought we were the better team in the first half - the second half was probably more even.

"Delighted with how the players responded today and how we looked physically.

"We conceded a goal really early but a really strong response which is what we're going to need and we did that really well last year.

"Delighted with the players, delighted with the effort and commitment."

On the Isak situation:

"You have to earn the right to train with us.

"We are Newcastle United. The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad - you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here.

"We will make sure that any player does that to earn the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.

"Of course I'd like him to be (at training), but whether he will I don’t know at this moment in time. We have been here with the time difference, preparing for training and for games. Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home."

On transfers:

"There’s not much time, especially when you consider you’ve got to get whoever comes in, and I’m talking any position here, up to speed with how we play, intricacies of what we do. It’s not easy.

‘We’re still actively in the market. We’re looking for players. Obviously we lost Callum Wilson who in himself is a massive loss and then you add that to Alex (Isak) who’s not been with us. We’ve certainly felt their absence.’

On the collective response to Son's substitution:

"I think it was very instinctive from the players. I think that speaks volumes for him as a person and him as a footballer that both teams recognize the way he's played the game.

"I think it's not just his ability. It's his attitude. The way he's handled himself, conducted himself has been impeccable in England. So I think that was great to see from both sets of players. I was very pleased with my players' reaction to that."

Howe pre-game press conference quotes:

On Alexander Isak:

"I know where he is (Spain), really, through the media. From that perspective, it’s difficult for me to go into any kind of detail. The situation is far from ideal and is quite complex.’

"I am very much removed from anything that's happening back home. I was made aware that there was a bid yesterday - that bid was turned down all before I even heard about it. There's people back in England dealing with the situation.

"I really don't know what's going to happen next, but from our perspective we still support Alex in every way, and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.

"It’s difficult, because you don’t know what is going to happen from this point. We can only deal with the reality. The reality is we had a first bid from Liverpool and I believe that was turned down. From this point onwards, let’s see what happens.

"In terms of trying to upset players and all that kind of stuff, from my perspective, we can only talk about our conduct. We try to do things in the right way.

"Signing players is always complex. We just try to do what we think is right. I can’t talk about other clubs, that’s not for me to say.”

On the transfer market:

"We're looking for the best players that we can get. Whatever our target position is, we're looking for the best so I see all situations open and available to us.

"I feel that's the only way that we're going to get to where we want to go, which is to maximise, and it's quality over quantity. It always has been. That's always been the way that we try to work and the way that we try to recruit, and I think we've done it pretty well to this point.

"It's been a challenging summer, because we've missed out on various targets for loads of different reasons, but we're still very competitive, and we're still in there trying to bring very good players to the club - and that won't change until the window shuts."

They Said

Thomas Frank said:

"I thought it was a good game between two competitive teams. We scored a great goal from high pressure where we were winning it high. It was a big, big part of what we like to do.

"I also think we won it high, maybe four, five or six times where we could have created more of those situations and then we dropped a little bit back. Then in the second half, we got back to more of that. Fair result in an even game."

On James Maddison:

"It's like in life and football, I think sometimes life and football can be brutal, but also sometimes very beautiful. So I think it was brutal in what happened to Madders. It looks like a a bad injury.

"Of course we don't know exactly the status on it. It didn't look good - it’s the same knee as the previous injury. Of course, we don't know the full assessment of it, so we need to see that.”

On Son's substitution:

"Unbelievable, beautiful scenes with his teammates. The big respect from Newcastle, can't praise that highly enough from their players on the pitch.

"I knew he would play this game no matter what. If this was potentially his last game or not, he would captain the team.

"So I think the only thing was I spoke a little bit with him that I'd like to make sure we'd honour him in the right way, and of course have a little bit of a professional view on it. So I needed to have other players on the pitch as well. So bits like that.

"We had the walk around and then the teammates gathered around and he was emotional. In the changing room it was more of the same. I just said a few things but not much because it’s about Sonny and then he said a few things. It was beautiful."

Stats

The last friendly meeting between these two sides came after the 2023/24 season, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia. Following a 1-1 draw, United won a penalty shootout 5-4.

Lewis Hall made a return to action having recovered from the foot injury that he suffered against Liverpool back in February.

Joe Willock missed out with a calf injury and is expected to be out for up to six weeks. Sven Botman wasn't risked after reporting a tight groin during the Arsenal kickabout.

Martin Dubravka failed to join the squad in Seoul as predicted. Initially omitted as a deal for James Trafford loomed, the failure of that saw the Slovakian penciled in to travel, only for conclusion of the Aaron Ramsdale loan deal to see Dubravka stay in the UK - negotiating a transfer to Burnley.

There was a first outing for Mark Gillespie since May 2024 when he started the 0-8 loss to an A-League XI in Melbourne, Australia. His last competitive senior game was in September 2020.

United debuted their new green change kit, with the match details in Korean on the chest. The back had player names in Korean and English, with squad numbers in a bespoke Western typeface.

Our opponents donned a black change kit without player names and with squad numbers in a distinctive colourful font. Those numbers were designed by Korean artist Jaehoon Choi and reportedly inspired by the ‘Taegeuk’ Yin-Yang motif included on the Korean national flag.

Along with the one-off kits worn in Hong Kong for their meeting with Arsenal earlier in the week, these shirts were quickly placed on sale worldwide by Spurs.

Following defeats in Singapore and Suwon, United concluded their three game tour of Asia in Seoul on Sunday by coming behind to play out a deserved draw against Premier League rivals Spurs.

The fixture gained added significance when confirmation that Son Heung-Min's time as a Lillywhite was drawing to close made this both a homecoming and a curtain call for the local hero.

The North Londoners have made five separate visits to South Korea since 2005, four of them since signing the Korean international from Bayer Leverkusen almost exactly a decade ago.

Unsurprisingly, that meant the World Cup Stadium was overwhelmingly there in support of Spurs but the black and white contingent of travellers and locals made themselves known.

Matters were competitive on the pitch despite the obvious sentiment on show: the line-up Newcastle fielded and the feistiness of recent league meetings leading to some flashpoints as temperatures rose, despite the cooler 28 degree conditions and occasional rain showers.

Former Spurs colleagues Trippier and Son clashed when the latter was through on goal, the United defender yellow-carded for what would have been a red card offence in a competitive fixture.

The undoubted edge to proceedings was underwritten by Joelinton, who doesn't appear to have the word friendly in his vocabulary and became entangled with a trio of opponents during his shift.

Fellow Brazilian Guimaraes meanwhile shook Cristian Romero warmly by the throat shortly before the end of a first half during which Newcastle conceded early, but recovered to make and miss several notable chances before stylishly levelling.

Thomas Frank's side had their own moments as well; Mathys Tel racing clear from the halfway line on 18 minutes, only for Nick Pope to read the striker's fancy footwork and save with his boot.

Returning unchanged for the second half, Gordon came close to giving the Magpies the lead in the 50th minute but he couldn't steer his effort inside the post from Matt Targett's centre.

There was a worrying moment when Bruno slipped and stayed down but the midfielder continued after treatment and moments later Gordon volleyed in Murphy's cross but was flagged for offside.

Then came Son's farewell, leaving the field to an impromptu guard of honour from both sets of players on the pitch and warm embraces off it.

A further lengthy delay followed as former Magpie target James Maddison was stretchered off; going down in agony with nobody near him after a sharp turn.

Bruno came close in the final minute with a shot that cleared the crossbar after substitute Park Seung-Soo had done well to dribble and set him up. Despite numerous stoppages for substitutions and injuries, only two minutes were added and it ended all-square.

And while Son may have gone, the contest ended with each side fielding their Korean starlets: 19 year-old Yang Min-Hyeok for Spurs and United's 18 year-old Park. Same time here next year? Rule nothing out - unless we've been forced to sell him to satisfy some arcane Premier League legislation.

The Magpies exited with the minimum of fuss after saluting their followers and began their return to Tyneside. It's fair to say that the manager had plenty to occupy his thoughts in the air, including but not limited to the thorny issue of forwards - be they Swedish, Slovakian or whatever.

There were green shoots from the green shirts tonight, but our current rate of progress in the transfer market needs to accelerate significantly this month if we're to have genuine aspirations of building on last season.
