Eddie
Howe said:
"I can't be negative today - the players stood up. I think they were
really good mentally today.
"I'm happy with the point. I thought we were magnificent, front-foot, very
aggressive. We had chances to score.
"I think we had a bit of a lull in the game until the red card and
then came on strong again. I'm disappointed we didn't win. I don't think we
dominated, chance-wise, the way we wanted. We were maybe a little bit too
anxious to score but the players really turned up and gave everything."
On Alexander Isak:
"We do (have to
forget about him) he's not here with us.
"We have to focus on who is here and get the best out of them. The players
are aware he's not here, the focus will be on each player playing to the best of
their ability.
"I want him to play. I want him to train. I've had those conversations
(with him) but the details of those will remain private
"There
is no change to the situation. All my focus has been on the training, Aston
Villa and the transfer front in terms of getting players in - that is
all-consuming for me.
"Alex's situation has been unchanged for a while and that will continue to
be the case.
"Me and Alex have enjoyed a great relationship. I don't think he
would have done as well has he has done without that. Without his team-mates,
without the supporters.
"He is a highly
intelligent person and he knows he wouldn't have had the success he's had
without everybody connected with Newcastle.
"We'd like a resolution, we need that clarity. I'm
not in control of it, only one person is. I've made my stance pretty clear.
On the fans - and post-match "greedy
bastard" chants:
"Our supporters acted really well today because they supported the team
when we were playing. They've always done that unbelievably well. We have had
some tricky moments.
"I think afterwards, if they want to say something they are free to do
that."
Unai
Emery said:
"Grateful for our supporters. Full
stadium, the first match we were, everybody, motivated and excited to start here
winning.
"Of course, this is the 22nd match not losing at home and it is very good
as well to achieve it, but (to) lose like we did today, two points at
home, maybe is not the best.
"We are not happy when losing two
points at home. They deserved more after having better chances than us.
"The first half, we did not control the
game like we planned. We were not threatening them. They created one or two
chances and the goalkeeper, Marco [Bizot], did fantastic.
"The second half, we were building up
and creating opportunities in the box. The red card changed the match.
Of course, in my mind, was (that) we have to try to get one transition
and to score one goal to win, but firstly, we needed defensively to set a high
commitment, everybody in (their) task, and they did it.
"And, of course, we didn’t concede a
lot of chances. More or less, we were defending a lot of corners, and I think we
have to accept this result."
Emery's programme notes:
"We cannot avoid that the summer has been challenging because the financial
rules were conditioning our investment - and our squad. This is a situation that
we knew, we accept with full responsibility and we will overcome trying to work
harder and be accurate in our decisions.
"Financial control rules came to football to avoid bankruptcies and payment
defaults, with a good purpose. But as professionals we should review it, for
this good tool will become a limitation for the clubs that are doing good
management, who will never be allowed to dream and get higher goals."
Anthony Elanga made his competitive debut for United, the 270th
different player to represent the club in the Premier League and the fourth
Swede
to have done so, following Andreas Andersson, Emil Krafth and that other bloke
who wasn't here.
Fellow new boys Malick Thiaw, Aaron Ramsdale and Park Seung-soo were unused substitutes.
Dan Burn made his 150th competitive NUFC appearance in all competitions (125th in the PL).
Newcastle failed to take maximum points from
their opening PL fixture for the first time in four seasons, after a 2-0
home victory over Nottingham Forest in 2022, a 5-1 success against Villa at
Gallowgate in 2023 and a 1-0 win against Southampton on Tyneside last year.
It's now three games and 270 minutes since the Magpies last scored a
PL goal, when Bruno
Guimaraes shot home against Chelsea at SJP in the final seconds of normal time.
That win was followed by 0-1 losses at Arsenal, at home to Everton and today's
scoreless draw at Villa.
The last time United registered a trio of
consecutive PL blanks was in January 2021 (0-1 at Sheffield United, 0-3
at Arsenal and 0-2 at Aston Villa).
270 barren minutes isn't the worst spell under Eddie Howe - a two game
run in early 2023 bookended early and late goals, meaning the goal drought
stretched to 337 minutes.
Newcastle failed to find the net on the opening day of the PL season for the
first time since 2019, when they lost 0-1 at home to Arsenal.
The Magpies have now avoided defeat in their first PL game in each of the
last four seasons, since losing 2-4 to West Ham at Gallowgate in
2021.
This was United's third season-opening goalless draw in the PL, after 0-0 stalemates on Tyneside in 1998 and 2011.

Following a PL investigation into multiple transgressions last
season, Villa were unable to deploy the "multi ball" system today -
the first of a three game ban. They were also fined £120,000.
Jacob Ramsey wasn't considered for selection by either side - the midfielder
was officially announced as a Magpie the day after the game but the transfer
formalities look to have been completed in Newcastle on the Friday.

wor machine keeps turning
Following a pre-season perhaps best described as uncomfortable, Newcastle
lined up at Villa Park for their opening fixture on Saturday lunchtime without a
quartet of familiar faces.
Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff and Martin Dubravka have all left for Premier
League pastures new, but the absence of a fourth man from proceedings continued
to exercise the tongues of the media and the patience of Eddie Howe and his
club's exasperated supporters.
84 days after he last kicked a ball in anger for the club, Alexander Isak was
missing after his efforts to leave reached the point that he became a striker of
a different type and club fines kicked in.
Sadly that deadlock also meant that his present club lacked an orthodox
centre forward, Howe's lack of confidence in William Osula seeing Anthony Gordon
lead the line - the Wilson vacancy that was known about last season inexplicably
remains unfilled.
Their opponents may have gone into the game unbeaten on home ground for almost
12 months, but Villa were hardly in rude health after a debilitating transfer
window during which they'd been forced to confront the financial reality of PSR
in much the same way the Magpies were a year ago.
Our fear as the Isak saga unfolded was that what may well be spurious reasons
(broken promises over transfers, contracts, signings, staff, training grounds or stadia)
would be latched on to by other blue chip Magpies who no longer bought into the
"project" and wanted to cut short their "journey".
If nothing else, the spirited collective display from the green-clad Magpies
after the first 45 minutes of the season alleviated those concerns, even if the
bluntness of the attack was just as evident.
Villa reached half time having failed to have a single shot on target while United should have been in front in just the third minute when debutant Anthony
Elanga shot against Marco Bizot with Gordon on hand for a tap-in. Hopefully that
won't be Elanga's Jon
Dahl Tomasson moment....
Chances came and went for the visitors: better crosses from both flanks would have seen
them ahead
at the break while a familiar-looking back four protecting Nick Pope was spearheaded by Dan
Burn, who made a series of well-timed interventions to snuff out the occasional
Villan counter.
United's domination was less pronounced after the restart, but worries they'd
failed to capitalise on that earlier supremacy lifted when Gordon beat Ezri Konsa
and was pulled down in the 66th minute.
The break in play while he was banished saw United players visibly re-energised,
taking it in turns to exhort their fans to greater efforts and perhaps believing
that this after all, was to be our day.
But like the feeble free kick that followed (and other dead ball situations that
did nothing to boost the reputation of United's new set piece supremo Martin
Mark), it all fell rather flat.
Into the closing stages and debutant Bizot - who looked shaky but remained mostly
untested - dealt with Gordon's low shot after a mazy dribble. That came after
United's number 10 had assumed a more familiar left wing
role and Harvey Barnes worked an opening from similar range to many of his Toon goals
but blasted the ball into the crowd. Ozzy would have called it a shot in the
dark....
Sadly, our inability to profit from the situation presented to us meant that the
most-profile player today was the one who remained absent due to his own
misguided motives. A reaffirmation of team spirit and siege mentality is all
well and good, but that doesn't solve our scoring problem.
It's fair to say that had Isak played then one point would have become three,
but with the proviso that the Isak in question was the effective, defence-torturing
one; not the facsimile who cantered out late last season, when it was assumed he
was carrying an injury rather than a grudge.
Given the evident efforts of those who did put a shift in, it's equally
justifiable to claim that victory would have been achieved had the Newcastle
side included any effective centre forward or were more experienced with Gordon
in that role.
Pick your era: Albert Stubbins, Peter Beardsley, Andy Carroll. We've
seen it all unfold before, fumed, survived and prospered. No player is
irreplaceable, but at this point in time the frustration of seeing the
supporting cast improved after successive wasted windows only to then lose the
leading Mag threatens to overshadow everything else. 15 days to save a season.
