Interim U21 coach Robbie Stockdale said:

"
It’s been a tough night for us.

"I was happy with a lot of things especially in the first half. I thought we were a little bit unfortunate to go at two-nil down to be honest but against a strong opposition, really good opposition.

"You have to take your moments and I think we had some chances at key moments in the game, we didn’t take ours and if you don’t get everything correct without the ball, they’ve got players that can exploit you and hurt you and the game got away from us pretty quickly in the second half.

"If you compare the two teams, I think the biggest difference was how clinical Chelsea were at the top end of the pitch and they have got such good players, even the players that came on made an impact on the game.

"I felt for large periods our lads stood up to that and hung on in there. Even at two-nil, we had a great chance with Park’s header and those are chances you have to take and at two-one it can suddenly look like a different game.

"It’s a steep learning curve for the players, that’s what 21s football is and the one things we do have this year is lots of games and they have got to get over it pretty quickly, knuckle down and get the next game under their belt.”

It's now two PL2 home defeats in a week for Newcastle U21s after their colours were lowered by Chelsea at Whitley Park on Friday evening.

The Blues had kicked off their season the previous weekend by defeating reigning Champions Manchester City but were second best in the opening quarter of an hour as United dominated possession without creating any chances.

That changed in the 16th minute when the visitors opened the scoring with their first serious effort; a loose ball out of defence reaching Dujuan Richards and the former Magpie trialist supplied a precise low finish.

It looked like Chelsea had doubled their lead in the 26th minute when Harrison Murray-Campbell diverted the ball in from a corner but the referee ruled it out for a push.

The second Chelsea goal duly arrived in the 37th minute when Jesse Derry picked up possession on the left hand touchline, shimmied into the box and struck a low effort emphatically into the far corner of the goal.

A rare moment of creativity from the black and whites saw Trevan Sanusi centre from the right midway through the second period, only for Korean Park Seung-soo to head wide with the goal at his mercy.

Within a minute the Blues had a third; substitute Ryan Kavuma-McQueen bamboozling goalkeeper Adam Harrison when shooting home from a tight angle on the left.

That soon became 0-4 when Harrison blocked a shot from Leo Cardoso but Shumaira Mheuka had the simple task of converting the rebound in the 74th minute.

Chelsea's fifth came in the 84th minute when a free-kick from a central position was clinically executed by Harrison Murray-Campbell giving goalkeeper Harrison no chance.
