Incoming coach Adam Lawrence said:
"We had a feeling that it could be this kind of night in terms of being a
tough test for the lads against very good League One opposition and it was.
It was a tough night with the level we came up against in all areas of the
game and what the lads are aspiring to get to.
"There was lots of endeavour and plenty of spirit but
it showed us the next level in terms of where the boys need to get to. It is
difficult to take in the short-term but there is lots of learning and
opportunities for growth and to improve further.
"When you look at the under-21s programme and taking
the next step, these games are as close as it gets. When footballers are
playing in the stadiums in front of crowds against this level of opposition
and established Football League players, this is a reality check for the
boys.
"In the periods of the game where it looked like we
could get back into it or had a little bit of a lifeline, we were too
vulnerable and conceded some soft goals. The lads are disappointed at that
and we're the same. It's our job to help them and be more prepared to learn
from this when we face these situations again.
"Personally, it's day two so I'm still learning people's names, let alone
preparing them for matches. I think it's up for the boys to understand that
these different competitions they're playing in and what they're involved in
are there for them to embrace and to attack the challenge head on.
"On the whole, it's been a mixed start in terms of
results but there's been decent performances in the league and I think
they've deserved more than what they've got. That's probably where the group
are in naivety and the next level of competitiveness and intensity in how
you understand those moments.
"That will be the next bits we focus on during this
period where we have an opportunity to train which will help us."
Uninvolved in the tie was 19 year-old Norwegian
midfielder Travis Hernes, who was concluding a season-long
loan switch to Dutch side Groningen - the Dutch transfer window closing 24 hours
later the UK equivalent. The Eredivisie side state that it includes a
purchase option at season's end.
Fellow U21 player Trevan Sanusi has completed a loan switch to French
Ligue 1 side Lorient.

Newcastle U21s began this season's Vertu Trophy group stage on Tuesday
against Huddersfield Town by matching their heaviest defeat in the nine
years that have participated in this competition.
Making eight changes to the side beaten 1-3 at Barnsley in League
One the previous weekend, the hosts took just eight minutes to open the scoring
when defender Jack Whatmough headed home an in-swinging corner from
the right.
Town went two ahead five minutes later; Marcus Harness sending Adam
Harrison the wrong way from the penalty spot after visiting captain Cathal Heffernan
was punished for a push on Leo Castledine.
The green-clad Magpies gained a foothold in the tie three minutes
into first half added time, when Alfie Harrison's left wing corner was
headed back across the box by Heffernan and Scott
Bailey's goalbound shot took a wicked deflection that deceived home
'keeper Lee Nicholls.
Inspection of the footage reveals that the vital touch came off the
backside of Bailey's colleague Sean Neave, who thus claimed his
fourth goal in five U21 league and cup starts this season.
However Huddersfield almost immediately restored their two goal
advantage; an attack down the right ending with the unattended Castledine
converting Joe Taylor's pull back.
A change of ends brought no respite for incoming U21 coach Adam Lawrence,
who saw his new charges fall further behind to strikes from Taylor in the 47th and 51st minute.
Magpies defender Charlie McArthur then turn home
Castledine's right wing cross into his own net at the near post to make it 1-6 seven
minutes into the second period.
Newcastle netted their second goal of the evening on 77 minutes
following good interplay between substitute Joe Brayson and Sean
Neave, the latter crossing for Dylan Charlton to fire home.
Another top effort from the real Ashington Express, GW.
