Half time: Newcastle 0 Barcelona 0
58 mins 30 seconds after Bruno Guimaraes lost possession to Fermin Lopez
outside the Barca area, Jules Kounde whipped in a cross from the right side
of the Newcastle box that a dazed and confused Fabian Schar failed to
prevent Marcus Rashford from powerfully heading home. Heartbreaking. 0-1
67 mins Marcus Rashford's header to Robert Lewandowski was intercepted
by Dan Burn but he played the ball back to the on-loan Red Devil, who
stepped outside an attempted block by Sandro Tonali, accelerated and planted
a 20 yard right-footed rocket in off the crossbar. Unstoppable. 0-2

90 mins A goal of supreme quality almost lost in the enormity of the
occasion: an intricate eight man passing move across both sides of the
halfway line ending with Anthony Gordon side-footing home Jacob
Murphy's low arcing cross from the right from 12 yards at the Gallowgate
End.
1-2

Full time: Newcastle 1 Barcelona 2
Eddie Howe said:
"Yeah, disappointed. I think we were really in the game. We were
never out of it.
"The chances were there in that first half but against teams
like this there's never too many - and that's what's going to
happen.
"We kept going till the end - one goal was always going to
change the mood. They managed the extra time really well. we were
desperate for the ball and we couldn't get it off them.
"It was a whole-hearted, gutsy display from us - we just
lacked the quality at the end of it.
"We wanted to create a difficult environment with high-octane
football. I think it was there. We didn't get the bounce of the ball
off the presses.
"The chances were there in the first half. Against teams like
this you won't get many. We got punished.
"A lot of commitment, a lot of heart from the players. I
thought it was a good performance without being a great one and, to
beat Barcelona, it needs to be a great one.
"We had the chances. Two big moments in the first half that we
didn't take and, ultimately, when you concede the first goal, the
game swings on that moment.
"There was no lacking in terms of heart and courage. We can be
critical of a couple of things we could have done better but,
ultimately, we will analyse it, try and improve and try and grow
from this experience."
On starting with Nick Woltemade on the bench:
"I can't live in that world, I have to make decisions for the
benefit of the player sometimes.
"It was a really difficult one for Nick, of course any player
would want to start every game but I have to try to manage him into
the team.
And make sure he stays fit and that was always at the heart of
this decision. Knowing that we have Anthony (Gordon)
suspended for the next game as well.
"It is the same for Jacob Murphy as well, he is nursing an
achilles problem and we just want to keep the majority of the squad
as fit and healthy for as long as possible."
On Fabian Schar's fitness:
"I’ve got no more information right no. I’m in the hands of the
doctors. The only message I had was that he was okay to continue,
then it became clear that he couldn’t.”
On the Barcelona goals:
"We can do better with both. On the first one, it was
disappointing he was allowed the cross. The second one was an
unbelievable finish.
"When the dust settles we'll look back differently. These
nights are only magical if you win and we failed on that objective -
we'll learn from nights like this."
On Sunday's game at Bournemouth:
"The process is the same. I don’t think there are massive new
learnings. The biggest issue is psychological rather than physical —
the high of tonight, the emotion, and then having to go again in a
tough away league game.
"That’s the challenge - every European team faces it, and that’s why
these campaigns are harder than just Premier League football. This
will be our first test of that this season, and hopefully we can
rise to it.”
Hansi Flick
said:
"It was a fantastic atmosphere. We saw how
Newcastle were playing with high intensity. It’s what we expected. We had
the confidence and believed in our strengths.
"Newcastle performed well. They are a physically strong team with tall
players who are difficult to defend against in set pieces, but I greatly
appreciate how we handled it. We controlled the match, and I’m happy to see
what we achieved today.
"When they scored a goal, it wasn’t easy. We have a young team
that is always striving to develop and improve, and that’s what I see from
my players.
"We controlled the match, but we made a lot of mistakes. Sometimes, we need to play with more seriousness, and we have to work on
that. When you play against a team like Newcastle, which plays well on
transitions, it’s important not to make too many mistakes, but we defended
well today.
"It’s very important to
get three points from the beginning of the season. Last year we lost to
Monaco. It helps us to get better and better.
"It's the Champions League and there is always a great atmosphere. We knew
that it was important to not concede on the opening 15 minutes and I am
really pleased with what we have done and I am happy with the team."
On Marcus Rashford:
"For me it was the first step - he has to make
the next step. This match, these goals here in England against Newcastle,
for Barcelona in the first Champions League match this season, it's great.
It gives him confidence in himself. This is the most important thing.
"He's a fantastic player, a great talent and his finishing is incredible.
For a striker it's always great to score goals and so I'm really happy for
him. With Deco before the season started we said we needed a player like
him."
"We always see (him impress) in training and we saw it today. I’m
happy for him. In the offence we have a lot of good players and he’s one.
I’m happy to have him. He gives us more options and it’s great to have him.
"These two goals will help
a lot to get Marcus to the next step. It’s so important he has the
confidence and feels OK. These goals are unbelievable for him for the next
steps.”

Following defeats by Borussia Dortmund (0-1) and AC Milan (1-2) in 2022/23,
United lost their third successive European game at SJP, the first time
they've ever done so and extending an unwanted record - the Dortmund and Milan
games were their first back to back European home losses.
At the end of the first fixture week of the league phase,
Newcastle sit 26th in
the 36 team table.
Nick Pope completed a century of
appearances for United in all competitions.
Anthony Gordon scored his 23rd Newcastle goal in
all competitions and his first in Europe.
His 22nd had come in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal back in February
2025, this latest
strike ending a 14 game blank run at club level.
Gordon became the 21st different player to net for United in the
Champions League, scoring our 40th goal in that competition. He's the
third current Magpie to complete a set of PL, League Cup, FA Cup and European
goals for Newcastle, after Dan Burn and Joelinton.
Three players made their European debut for Newcastle; Anthony Elanga and
Nick Woltemade appearing for the first time in senior UEFA club
competition during their careers. Malick Thiaw had previous Champions
League with AC Milan, facing United in Italy but injured for the SJP return.
Harvey Barnes made his first CL start, having made the briefest of debuts
in the competition from the bench away to AC Milan two seasons earlier. Injury
sidelined him for the remaining five ties.
There was a first competitive senior bench selection for goalkeeper Max
Thompson.
Newcastle named the maximum permitted 12 substitutes on the bench,
something that they were only able do just once during the six CL ties of the
2023/24 season. The final two games - away at PSG and at home to AC Milan - saw
them only take up seven places.
This was Newcastle's sixteenth Champions League home fixture, the Magpies
suffering an eighth loss to accompany their eight victories. They are yet to
draw a game at SJP in this competition.
This was the fifth competitive meeting of these two sides - all in
the Champions League with Newcastle winning one and losing the other

2023/24 Borussia Dortmund lost 0-1
2023/24 AC Milan lost 1-2
2025/26 Barcelona lost 1-2
Marcus Rashford sadly continued his run of goals against Newcastle,
having previously struck five times in the colours of Manchester
United. Team mates Ferran Torres and Raphinha at least didn't add to
their respective tallies of four (for Manchester City) and two (for
Leeds United).
There was a first visit to SJP and appearance against Newcastle for
striker Robert Lewandowski.
The 37 year-old has 105 Champions League strikes to his name,
placing him third in the all-time top scorer list for that
competition, behind Lionel Messi (163) and Cristiano Ronaldo (183).

St.James' Park may have reverberated to "Back in Black"
before kick-off,
but as he had done at Wembley two years earlier, Marcus Rashford
left Newcastle thunderstruck on Thursday evening.
Banished from Old Trafford, the England international twice served
up precision finishes within ten second half minutes to get off the
mark in style for his latest club, kick-starting a career that had
stuttered before almost coming to a standstill with last season's
unproductive loan to Aston Villa.
Getting ahead of Fabian Schar - who looked to be suffering the
effects of the ball hitting him in the face moments earlier, Rashford's stunning
second looked to have ended the game as a contest until Anthony
Gordon halved the deficit in the closing seconds of normal time
Gordon began the night leading a front three with Anthony Elanga on
the right and Harvey Barnes on the left, but was repositioned on the
left wing by the time he met Jacob Murphy's low centre from the
other flank and clipped the
ball home from 12 yards.
Last season's Champions League semi-finalists withstood fierce early
pressure on and off the field; every tackle and block from a home
player greeted with full-throated roars from the stands.
Aside from Gordon's fifth minute air shot from six yards though, the nearest that
the home side came to scoring during that period
was another tempting by Elanga that Barnes sprinted forward to reach
in the 23rd minute, only to see his first-time effort ping off the
boot of goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
No goal came before the break though and a half ended with the visitors
enjoying two thirds of possession but without truly testing Nick
Pope, whose familiar back four had already put in a significant
shift to nullify a stellar forward line and the prodigious presence
of midfielder Pedri.
Barcelona's dominance increased following the interval without creating clear scoring
chances until Rashford's brace came in a nine minute spell - his
opener coming just seconds before the point at which Patrick
Kluivert had broken Geordie hearts here in the 2003 meeting. That
night it was Craig Bellamy's profligacy in front of goal that had
prevented United from holding a half-time lead.
Conceding the first goal prompted Eddie Howe into a quartet of
substitutions that included Nick Woltemade on at centre forward. The
groggy Schar meanwhile made way for Malick Thiaw, who although
making only his second United appearance is something of a Champions
League veteran.
The defender instantly looked at home with timely touches at both
ends of the field, ending the night playing alongside Sven Botman -
a pairing that will hopefully serve the club well for years to come.
At 0-2 the Magpies
continued to struggle; time spent out of possession leading to a
lack of composure when belatedly regaining it, which also had the
effect of quietening the crowd.
And although the lifeline of Gordon's goal raised hopes among those
who hadn't deserted their seats, the experience that repeated
exposure to such situations brings was evident across the Barcelona
side - mixing gamesmanship and time-wasting with the timeless talent
of ball retention.
There's no disgrace in defeat to such prestigious opposition and the
nature of the competition means that this result wasn't
catastrophic, but on a night when United needed to make the most of
the few chances that came their way, the current issues of creating
and scoring goals were evident - something not helped by another
game when set piece situations were instantly forgettable.
Gordon's strike will hopefully be a confidence booster, but the
injury sidelining Yoane Wissa puts pressure on the rest of the side to compensate
for his absence. That hasn't happened yet.
