United's winless start to the PL2 season lengthened to four games on
Monday evening, as they lost by the odd goal in five to the Canaries
at Whitley Park.
U21 coach Adam Lawrence took charge of his first league game since
arriving on Tyneside, but it was his opposite number Olly Lee - son
of SJP hero Rob - who was almost instantly celebrating an opener.
That came after just 15 seconds when Dylan
Jones won his one on one with home goalkeeper James Taylor and slotted
in.
The visitors doubled their advantage in the 27th minute after a corner
from the left was steered home by Toby Chilvers from close range.
United got one back a minute before half-time when Alfie Harrison
centred from the left side of the area and the ball was diverted
past Rylee Mitchell by Rory Finneran.
Winger Kyle Fitzgerald almost equalised for the Magpies eight
minutes after the interval when he smacked a first time effort off the post.
City restored their two goal lead in the 66th minute when Kenneth
Adoh broke upfield and held off several illegal challenges before
setting up Jones to finish coolly.
Newcastle pushed forward with more conviction in the closing stages
and Leo Shahar shot weakly against Mitchell before fellow substitute Fraser Harper found the top corner of the goal in the second
minute of time added on after a corner was only half-cleared.
However, the black and whites were unable to find an equaliser in
the remaining three minutes and slipped to a third successive home
defeat.
