Eddie Howe said:
"It was a magnificent game from
Newcastle. My team showed that we can score again. And I’m very
pleased we got to keep the zero (clean sheet). We maintained
control of the game and it's a big mental boost for us.
"Travelling out here, this was what we wanted - especially after the
Arsenal ending. It was a big response from the players because it
was a painful way to lose that game.
"The players had to dig deep, look within themselves and come out
fighting again. That's what we do best. I thought it was a really
good display. It was always going to be a tough game but I think as
soon as we got that first goal it settled us down and we played
really well.
"There was certainly some good bits from the front three. There a
feeling we could score at any moment in the game. Two of the goals
have come from penalties but we've scored four away from home. We
couldn't have asked for any more and there were some good individual
performances, which is good to see.
"I thought we attacked well and defended well. Any time you get a
clean sheet in the Champions League away from home, it is a good
statement to make.
"Hopefully it helps us when we return to the Premier League because
we've been waiting for a performance like that. It wasn't perfect -
there are things we can improve - but it was a big step in the right
direction and in an important stage in the Champions League because
we have to start well.
"There are things we can improve but it was a big step
in the right direction, an important stage as well in the Champions League
because we have to start well.
"These competitions are so high and the demands are so
big on us that if we're slow starters, we could leave ourselves too much to
do, so I certainly leave here in a lot healthier, positive frame of mind and
I'm looking forward to the next game.
"Both Woltemade and Tonali are claiming that first goal
- I love it. The best strikers I’ve worked with want to score. Even if there
is a directive, they don’t care. They want to score. They want that
responsibility. I’ve got no issue with that at all."
On Nick Woltemade:
"His potential is high. It is an exciting start for him
and he's done really really well, and more importantly he is willing, wants
to do the work and wants to improve.
"It is difficult to put a percentage on what he is
right now but there is more to come physically and tactically as we go
through the journey together with him.
"We will be doing a lot of physical work with him to
get him robust enough for the Premier League week in, week out."
On Malick Thiaw:
"Malick has come in and the biggest compliment I can pay him is that he's
settled in really quickly. He looks at home with his team mates; he's been
excellent in training. He and Sven (Botman) are building a good
relationship."
On Tino Livramento:
"Tino, we think, will be out roughly around six to
eight weeks, which is probably positive from where we were after the game,
thinking it might be months.
"We're probably looking, not this international break,
but maybe the next one (in November), he could be back. So certainly, more
positive than we initially thought."
On Yoane Wissa:
"He's receiving treatment, no operation needed. I think
we're looking at the other side of the international break.
"We hope he can be fit and available for that first
game (Brighton away). Touch wood, it's not a long-term injury. We get
through the next few games and then he'll be back.'
On Jacob Ramsey:
"He is on the grass, working hard, building his
fitness. The plan, I think, was it would be the first game after the
international break.
"If it's any earlier than that, then of course he's
ahead of schedule."
USG coach Sebastien Pocognoli
said:
"I'm proud of my team. They fought and even at 3-0 down they didn’t give up.
Newcastle were just on another level.
"We managed to threaten and we played our own game. We just lacked efficiency,
but one thing we have now is more experience. And that’s something that will
help us going forwards.
"There are more big teams to come in the Champions League and all will bring
their own strengths and tactics. All we can do is focus on ourselves and improve
our own game.
"Sometimes, our opponents can be condescending and look down on us but Newcastle
didn't. They paid us full respect and all their players were top level - which
shows that they had a great respect for us."
Ex-Boro defender and USG captain Christian Burgess said:
"We saw a Newcastle side that were just much more efficient and had so much
quality. We started the game very offensively and created chances.
"If we had scored to make it 2-1, for example, the whole game would have
changed. It’s unfortunate but a good lesson."
This was Newcastle's biggest-ever Champions
League away win and most emphatic on the road in Europe since their 4-0
UEFA Cup triumph
at French side Sochaux in 2004.

Eddie Howe's first away success in Europe ended a five game winless
run on the road for United (three draws, two losses) since a 1-0 Europa League victory at Metalist Kharkiv back in
2013.
Nick Woltemade's
third Newcastle goal was his first away from SJP and career
first in Europe.

Anthony Bernie, the bolt
Anthony Gordon now has three European goals for
United, level in the all-time listings with Tommy Gibb and Alan
Gowling. The last player to net in successive European ties was
Papiss Cisse in 2013.
Gordon is the first Magpie to score twice in any European tie since
Obafemi Martins at home to AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Cup during
March 2007.
Away from home, his was the first European brace since Shola Ameobi
at Lillestrom in the Intertoto Cup in August 2006. He's also
the last person to get two on the road in this competition, at Bayer
Levekusen in February 2003.
Harvey Barnes scored his 15th Newcastle goal and the first in
any cup competition as a Magpie. He's the 70th different player to
net for the club in European football, excluding own goals.
Barnes became the 23rd different player to net for United in the
Champions League, scoring our 44th goal in that competition.
Newcastle were last awarded two penalties in any senior competitive
game in March 2024, when Alexander Isak converted in each
half at home to West Ham in the PL.
Away from home in all competitions, Callum Wilson scored both of his
spot kicks against Leeds United at Elland Road in the Premier League
during May 2023, also in each half.
Will Osula appeared for the first time in a senior UEFA club
competition during his career.

This was Newcastle's third visit to this stadium, having lost 0-2 to
Anderlecht in the Fairs Cup during March 1970 with a crowd of 30,000
present. United returned for a 2-1 pre-season friendly victory in
August 1996. Tino Asprilla and David Ginola netting in front of
18,000 fans.
Union's veteran 9,500 capacity Joseph Marien Stadium across
the city wasn't deemed capable of staging CL ties, hence the use of
their rival's ground. Union did play their U19 Youth League fixture
against Newcastle there earlier in the day though, running out 2-0
winners.

It's a decade since
United's last visit to Belgium, for a 4-0 friendly win at Lokeren in
July 2016.

not included in any stats totals).

Newcastle lit the blue touch paper on their Champions League
campaign in Brussels on Wednesday night, scoring four times without
reply during what became a systematic dismantling of the reigning
Belgian champions.
Two goals in each half made it a comfortable night's work for the
Magpies at the Lotto Park home of Union's city rivals Anderlecht and
the winning margin could have easily matched or exceeded 1994's
celebrated 5-0 Antwerp romp.
It was a night of positives for Eddie Howe across the field as his
players combined stoic defence with rapid attacks: Anthony Elanga
enjoying his best game yet for the club and
Nick Woltemade scoring again to make a mockery of recent unfavourable
comments in his native Germany.
Anthony Gordon
meanwhile netted two spot-kicks and revelled on the left, while Harvey Barnes
resumed his super sub status by coming off the bench to clip home
his first goal of the season.
United opened the scoring in the 17th minute thanks to a slight but
vital touch from Woltemade on a Sandro Tonali snapshot, after Elanga's
cross was only partially cleared.
The Italian and German internationals appeared to be discussing
whose goal it was in the aftermath of the celebrations in front of
the away end, but big Nick was rightly credited with his third goal
in just four starts.
Elanga caused problems for Union down the United right and when
he cut across the edge of the area as half-time approached, he was
sent tumbling by Fedde Leysen - referee Urs Schnyder immediately pointing to the spot.
Gordon made no mistake from 12 yards to send his side into the break
with a two-goal cushion ahead of the inevitable response from USG,
who missed a golden chance when Israeli international winger Anan
Khalaily evaded Dan Burn but shot wide three minutes after the
resumption.
Nick Pope was the busier of the two goalkeepers for a time but
United continued to threaten; Elanga close to his first Toon goal
but denied by Kjell Scherpen's noteworthy stop.
Gordon's 61st minute deep centre from the left into the box then
began a sequence of events that led to the clinching third goal: Leysen ahead of Woltemade and Bruno in front of goal but blocking
the ball with his arm.
Play continued amid protests from both Newcastle players before a
VAR review sent the referee to the pitchside monitor and he duly
made his second spot kick award.
Gordon dispatched that firmly to the goalkeeper's left once again
for 3-0, indulging in his crossbow celebration for the second time
in the game.
Then came the goal of the night as Gordon robbed Sofiane Boufal in
the Newcastle area before finding Harvey Barnes in centre midfield.
He laid the ball off to fellow substitute Will Osula and the Dane
carried it forward before a defence splitting pass set up Barnes for
a neat first-time finish.
That triggered yet more flying pints in the away section, with only a
stunning stop from Scherpen denying
Tonali a deserved goal and his side's fifth near the end.
A statement result and performance for Newcastle then, as they
successfully married defensive steel and attacking poise for the
first time this season, matching their best European scoreline in
over 40 games and extending their run of away clean sheets in all
competitions to four games.
The Botman/Thiaw combination clicked again at the back, with the
organisational quality of Kieran Trippier again priceless. Dan Burn
filled in again at left back with Tino Livamento set to be sidelined
for some time and Lewis Hall being eased back in following his
absence.
Waltemade continues to find his feet both metaphorically and
physically, his style when in possession something to behold and
verging on the aura-like. Although lacking in the derriere
department, there are elements of Alan Shearer/Callum Wilson's
backside-first ploy in his hold-up play when it seems impossible to
dispossess him.
The trick is for those around him to play passes into feet and then
make their forward runs, safe in the knowledge that a return is
coming. There are signs that the penny is dropping.
Victory took United up to 11th in the 36-team table and sets them up
nicely for a home double header against Benfica and Bilbao, both sides
still pointless after their two games.
There's plenty of other games to occupy us before those, but still time to savour
this success - that
may have been our most memorable night on the continent since Feyenoord.
The clenched fist salutes from players, coaches and fans alike at full time told a story of a landmark win.
