Sandro Tonali's cross from the
United right was too high for Woltemade and reached Nicolo Savona on the
Forest right. He played a pass infield to Morgan Gibbs-White and set off
down the touchline to receive the return ball.
That never came however, as Gibbs-White received the ball facing his own
goal and began to turn before colliding with Guimaraes. The ball ran loose
and cannoned off Dan Burn, who was able to gain possession and set off
towards the Gallowgate goal.
He then slipping a pass infield for the unmarked Bruno Guimaraes
to take a touch and beautifully curl in a right-footed effort from
23 yards out as Ryan Yates
tried in vain to block it.

Savona assumed possession a
short distance from the Strawberry Corner flag, only for Woltemade to brush
past him and get his foot on the ball. The Forest defender turned away and
played a pass to Elliot Anderson just inside the box, who took a touch and
turned only for Bruno to arrive and speed and end up in a heap as the former
Magpie caught his leg.
Once the penalty kick was given,
Sels sprinted across to the Forest bench to seek guidance on what the taker
was going to do. He needn't have bothered as Nick Woltemade hit a
spot kick of rare quality into the top left hand corner of the net, giving
the goalkeeper absolutely no chance.
2-0

Eddie Howe said:
"A
huge win for us. The players have done really well in this week to
recover from the Arsenal game in the way that they have and speed,
to put that game to the back of our minds and to refocus on two
hugely important games, Champions League, to get our season going in
that competition.
"And then, of course, the importance of
the Premier League. It’s such an important competition for us. We’ve
maintained very good standards the last few years. We needed to
maintain them. At home, I thought it was vital we won today.
"I thought it was a good performance.
Tough opponents, defended very deep, a lot of men behind the ball,
we had to be patient. I thought we played some really good football
in both halves.
"I thought in the second half we played a lot quicker and a lot more
dynamic. And we asked more questions of them and eventually we got
rewarded for that. But I thought we controlled the game in both
halves. I can’t really ask any more of the players.
"Good performance. Not a lot of
goalmouth action in the first half so we had to be patient today.
The second half was better. I thought we had control of the second
half and we needed a moment to bring us the goal.
"Bruno's goal was a moment of
magic from an unbelievable player, and he's been so consistent for
us for a long period of time, and he makes a difference more often
than not, so I'm delighted for him."
On winning back-to-back games:
"It was huge. I think we’ve done really well at building on
winning streaks and runs, and backing up performances with another
one.
"It’s what we’re going to have to do to be successful this year. The
competition is so difficult. Forest came here, put a lot of men
behind the ball and made it very difficult. No one makes it easy for
you, you still have to find a way to navigate that and find a way to
win the game.
"We did that, and we haven’t done that enough at stages this season.
Hopefully, that’s a bit of a turning point for us."
On Lewis Hall:
"He felt his hamstring against
Union, which was a real blow for us. We’ve been trying to manage him
back, as I said on Friday. Unfortunately, he just felt something in
that game.
"We’ve had it scanned, but
before we can get conclusive evidence of how long he’s going to be
out, we need another rescan in about ten days.
"So, it’s not going to be a
short-term injury, but we hope it’s not going to be a long-term
injury. We sort of don’t know yet."
On the full back situation:
"We’ve got Alex Murphy who is developing
all of the time who can play that role for us. But beyond that, I
don’t think we have too many others.
“There is not too many options, I wouldn’t say. I
haven’t got a rabbit in the hat that you probably wouldn’t have thought of
(that includes Matt Targett, who won't be recalled from loan at Boro).
"It is a concern for us, because it’s such a key position.
I think Dan (Burn) has played really well in the
last two games.
"We’ve got players who can switch side, although that’s difficult.
Tino (Livramento) made that look very easy,
but it’s very difficult to do. Some players probably feel more comfortable
doing that than others.”
On Jacob Ramsey:
"He’s good. He’s trained for two
days, I just made the decision that I didn’t want to risk him and
potentially set him back again.
"I want to give him the two
weeks of the international break to make sure he’s ready for the
next game.”
On Nick Woltemade:
"I thought today was a good
performance. He grew into the game. The penalty was very composed. A
really good penalty from someone playing with confidence.
"Nick spoke to me about taking
penalties. He is confident in that respect.
"It's a difficult moment for me
because I just want to see the net ripple. I just want to see him
score. I don't really care how it gets there.
"Obviously, there's better ways
than others and that was a spectacular one, really. As long as he
scores in those moments, that's all that matters."
On another clean sheet:
"It's crucial, and I think we've
started the season really well defensively, Arsenal game apart
really.
"We've been solid, resilient,
there's been a lot of effort given by all the players to protect
their goal, and Nick Pope's been playing well too.
"A good mix for us because you
are only a goal away from winning a game.
"The break has probably come at
a bad time for us with the momentum. We will take it and dust the
players down and regroup."
On Anthony Elanga:
"I think it’s been a good start for him.
He’s different to players we’ve had in that position previously.
When someone plays the role differently, you have to get used to how
they play it.
"He’s a threat. Every opposition team we’ve played against will have
felt his threat in the game. In some respects, that helps us in
other ways, and maybe ways we don’t really realise yet."
Nick Waltemade added:
"Big win. Second in win a row.
Really important and tough game to come in. Good energy and that was
the key point for today.
"Now we go into international
break with two wins - that was really important to come into with a
good position. We have good energy from the
bench. We have done really well.
"When you score as a striker on
the pitch the feeling is really good. The gaffer is such a good
gaffer."
Ange Postecoglu
said:
"I see it as an exciting opportunity. You have to be up
for the fight and the struggle. I’d be silly to be sitting here at the age
of 60 if I lacked self-belief or fight. Even in the schoolyard I picked
fights with people that beat me up.
"I get that it’s part of
the fanfare of the Premier League that it needs one manager to be in the
spotlight. If people want to assess me three and a half weeks into the job,
there’s nothing I can say or do that will change that.
"But what I have seen and
felt in this period is that we are heading in the direction I want us to.
The results will come. In the meantime it is a struggle and a fight and
there is nothing wrong with that.
"We don’t have things handed to us on a plate in life, we have to fight. I
have fought for things all my life. Why does everyone want everything neatly
packaged? The attitude today seems to be that as soon as something goes
wrong, you change it.
"I knew this was a big challenge. There’s nothing wrong
with that. I don’t know why people think challenges are a burden, I love a
challenge. The alternative is sitting at home watching games and I don’t
want to do that. If you guys have a lot fun around it I don’t care. I
couldn’t care less.”
"It is always tough coming here with the crowd
behind them and the atmosphere but I felt we handled it well. We didn't
capitalise on the opportunities we needed to take and then a couple of
things went against us and you don't get the outcome you want.
"They raised the tempo in the second half. I thought we
controlled the game well in the first half but we had a couple of really
good moments when we had to take our chances.
Asked if Morgan Gibbs-White was fouled in build up to
opening goal:
"I guess this is the world we have created where referees won't make
decisions. I think without VAR he makes a decision there but with it he lets
it run. Something we have to live with.
Asked if he's surprised not have got first win yet?
"Nothing surprises me in football. We have gone through this period where it
is three-and-a-half weeks since I've come in and things haven't gone the way
we'd have loved but it doesn't deter me.
"We have a couple of weeks of work with some of the lads in the
international break. We will turn the fortunes around.
It is a struggle, it is a fight there is nothing wrong with
that.
"I could have been sat on the couch watching you guys but I prefer to be
here right in the middle of it, where I can have an effect and I believe I
will."
Newcastle achieved back to back wins in all competitions for
first time since Premier League home victories over Manchester United and
Crystal Palace in April 2025. In terms of successive wins and
clean sheets, that was last achieved in December 2024, with PL wins
at home to Aston Villa and away at Manchester United.
Bruno Guimaraes scored his second Premier League goal of the season and
now has 23 to his name in that competition. The strike moved him one
clear of Joelinton and Laurent Robert in the club's scoring charts for this
competition and placed him level with Miggy
Almiron and Kieron Dyer.
Nick Woltemade scored his third PL goal of the season and now has four
in all competitions for Newcastle. He's only the third player to net in each
of his first three PL home games for the club, after Les Ferdinand
and Alan Shearer.
Sir Les went on to score in his first six PL appearances at SJP
while Wor Al managed a remarkable 15 game run.
Five clean sheets
in their opening seven league games is
Newcastle's meanest start to a Premier League season, exceeding the
five in the first 11 games that they achieved in the 2005/06, 2022/23 and
2023/24 seasons.
The last season that a Magpies side reached five league clean
sheets quicker than the current campaign was 2009/10 in the Championship, when they did it in
six games. It took no less than 34 PL games for United to post five clean
sheets in both the 2000/01 and 2004/05 seasons.
Newcastle were successful from the penalty spot in a PL game against
Nottingham Forest for the fourth time in as many seasons.
Despite what some alleged journalists thought, Newcastle winning this
game following a Champions League tie wasn't proof that Eddie Howe's side
have improved since 2023/24. Their six CL games during that season were
followed by three wins, two draws and one defeat....

Two vital contributions from Bruno
Guimaraes helped United to deepen the woes of an ailing but
obstinate Nottingham Forest side at Gallowgate on Sunday afternoon.
Following a scoreless first half when the efforts of midweek looked
to have adversely affected an unchanged line-up, Newcastle's
Brazilian captain lifted his side with a superb strike before
winning a penalty kick that Nick Woltemade dispatched into the roof
of the net to seal victory.
That decision to send out the same side that started against Union
SG was partly forced on Eddie Howe; Lewis Hall joining fellow full
back Tino Livramento on the sidelines with a hamstring issue of
unknown severity.
Winless in all six games since Ange Postecoglu took over from Nuno Espirito
Santo at the City Ground, the visitors only rarely threatened Nick
Pope's goal in a tepid opening 45 minutes, but restricted the hosts
to only half-chances.
Two of those opportunities fell to Joelinton, who directed one shot at Matz Sels and forced the former Magpie custodian into a
smarter stop from a close range header.
Other than that
though, Sels had little to do as the home side struggled to get
anything resembling service from the flanks into the box - Anthony
Elanga failing to make any great impression against his old side.
The second half opened with a rare example of a goalbound effort
from Woltemade not ending up in the net; Gordon teasing down the
left and centring for Morato to tee up the German but then block his
instant first-time volley.
Frustration turned to relief just before the hour however, Bruno
bullying Morgan Gibbs-White in central midfield and Dan Burn setting off
towards the Gallowgate goal before slipping a pass for our number 39
to beautifully curl in a shot from outside the box as Ryan Yates
tried to block.
Forest protests over a foul were waved away and United quickly set
about trying to wrap up their second league victory of the season,
after a moment of panic when Chris Wood was left unattended in front
of the home goal before an offside flag was raised.
Belgian Sels was proving rather harder to beat than his fellow
countrymen had in Brussels on Wednesday; making a string of stops to
foil Sandro Tonali, Malick Thiaw and Harvey Barnes while Woltemade also
rattled the Forest crossbar.
Former Magpie Elliot Anderson set up United's second goal with six
minutes of normal time remaining, tempted into an unwise collision
on the edge of his own box with Bruno at the cost of United's third spot
kick in just two games.
With Anthony Gordon replaced earlier in the half, Woltemade snared the ball before confidently hoofing
it into the top left hand
corner of the net as Sels looked on helplessly.
Three points saw United climb four places into eleventh, also
registering their fifth clean sheet in seven PL games. Not pretty at times,
but ultimately effective and based on a five man defensive core of which
just one (Burn) will be on international duty in the next fortnight.
