U21 coach Adam Lawrence said:

"These competitions really expose the lads in terms of their next steps and senior football. Naturally, in the first-half, we had a good start to the game and a real energy about us.

"We spoke before the game about the lads standing up to the physical tests and the challenges that these types of games give you. I thought they did that and, in periods, showed quality to get the goals so, overall, it was a good night for the group and a good performance and win.

"The lads would be upset that we conceded so soon in the second-half after being so dominant and playing so well, getting that three-goal lead but we asserted ourselves in the next five to ten minutes and resettled, getting back some control within the game.

"I felt we showed better game management in the second-half in terms of what was needed to get the win and three points in the end. It's nice to get another one in the competition and another two games to look forward to.

"He plays the majority of the time through the middle as a number nine but he has played as a ten before and slightly deeper. He is intelligent, can handle the ball and I thought he found some really good spaces, particularly in the first-half where he caused a lot of threat.

"It's something he does enjoy, in terms of dropping in and linking, and he played the role properly which is credit to him. It was really nice for him to get the goals which he loves to do but, more importantly, his overall performance on the game and his energy off the ball was really good.

"Going forward, we looked really exciting at times. Seung-soo (Park) also got more minutes under his belt and, physically, he looked good and caused a lot of problems.

"It's not easy coming to places like this, a strong National League side, and if you don't do certain things well, these types of nights can be really tough so I'm pleased for the lads."

Stats

Newcastle gave an U21 debut from the bench to 16 year-old midfielder Sam Alabi.

Revenge for the Magpies after a 2-3 loss at the same venue in this competition last season.

Wednesday night saw Newcastle U21 coach Adam Lawrence's side win their first game since his appointment last month, thanks to a first half hat-trick from Sean Neave.

The 18 year-old striker extended his seasonal scoring record to seven goals in eight U21 starts, as United made it two wins from their first two ties in the
National League Cup.

A foul on visiting defender Charlie McArthur by Kieren Donnelly in the box gave Neave an opportunity to open the scoring and he converted his penalty with 16 minutes played.

The green-clad Magpies then doubled their lead on the half hour when Neave took Scott Bailey's pass before calmly steering a low shot past Pilgrim's goalkeeper Bobby Jones.

Fine skill by Korean winger Park Seung-soo then set up Neave five minutes before the interval, winning his one on one with Jones, side-footing home to complete his first U21 hat-trick.

Making nine changes from the starting line-up that won 3-1 at Gateshead last out, Boston|reduced the deficit two minutes after the break when Frankie Maguire netted from distance.

Despite enjoying a greater share of possession though, the National League side never looked like denying Newcastle victory and only a vital block denied Kacey Wooster from a fourth away goal.

Boston remain top of Group D with nine points after completing their four group stage games, with the Magpies sitting three points behind in second.

Newcastle conclude their own group stage participation with visits to Scunthorpe United and Halifax Town in December, with the top two sides advancing to the knockout quarter final stage.

Leeds United, Boro and the mackems make up Group D, but along with ourselves only come up against the four National League teams, not each other.
