Goals

11 mins Bruno Guimaraes won a free kick midway into the Athletic half towards the right that Kieran Trippier took. Dan Burn stood in the box before pushing Robert Navarro away as the set piece came over and peeling away into an unoccupied area of space around 12 yards from the Leazes goal.

Joelinton and Malick Thiaw stood firm to prevent any possible interference from opponents on the edge of the area as Burn looped in a superb headed effort into the net, goalkeeper Unai Simon completely deceived by the trajectory and watching the ball glance off the far post and in. 1-0

Half time: Newcastle 1 Athletic 0

49 mins Jacob Murphy's ball infield from the right flank ended up at the feet of Harvey Barnes on the opposite side of the Bilbao box and he had a shot that rebounded back to him off Dani Vivian.

Presented with a second opportunity, Barnes opted to loop in a cross that found Joelinton unmarked right in front of goal on the six yard line. His simple header gave the goalkeeper no chance. 2-0

Full time: Newcastle 2 Athletic 0

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"We navigated today really well after the weekend. It was important we responded mentally. Our psychology was really good. We’ve had three wins in a row, some good performances and we’re in a good position.

"Really pleased with today. It was an important response to West Ham. We had a really quick turnaround for this game. I don't think it was us at our very best but it was enough to win and we're in a good position now in this competition.

"We learn a lot naturally. This format is really good, really enjoyable, more games but it's a bigger test when you return to the Premier League, we're finding that mentally and physically, so we've got work to do in that respect.

"It's been good to have a game off the back of West Ham, I think that was a really positive - a chance to put that performance away and mend some things that we did wrong. But there were some positives tonight, defensively I thought we looked good and we scored two good goals.

"We want to make sure we don’t become that team that’s yoyoing in terms of attitude and intensity. I know the players are frustrated, so I don’t think it’s from a lack of effort.

"If you’re just able to lift yourself for certain moments you never know when that negative side’s going to raise itself."

On Dan Burn's header:

"It was very reminiscent of the
(Carabao) cup final. It was an incredible header from distance and he's arrowed it into the top corner. Yes, it was a training ground move so well done to all the coaches involved in that."

On Joelinton finding the net:

"He needs to score. He's always been a scorer of big goals for us. We've worked a lot recently on it with him arriving late in the box and using his aerial strength from crosses.

"I was really pleased with that goal for him because we need our eights and our wide men to chip in with more goals so that's hopefully a good start for him.

On Anthony Gordon:

"I’ve not spoken to him and I haven’t really had a full rundown from the medical team.  It seems like a reoccurrence of his hip injury that has been plaguing him in recent weeks.

"We’ll assess that and see what damage is there."

On Lewis Hall:

"Really pleasing (to see him return), also with how he played. It was a great little cameo for him. Hopefully that will give him a lot of confidence in his body and how he feels.

"He’s a massive player for us so it was great to introduce him back into the fold.”

On William Osula:

"We’ve just been in discussions with him at length about his ankle in the last few days, as to whether he’s fit enough to actually perform to the level that we need and that he’s comfortable with.

"After a discussion, we felt it was best to withdraw him and try to get his ankle 100% right.”

On their Champions League form:

"These home games were really important and that put an added pressure on us. Across the board, it's consistency in our performance wherever we play. Now we go away in the Champions League. Marseille will be incredibly difficult."

They Said

Ernesto Valverde said:

"I have a bitter taste in my mouth. It was a shame. In the first half they punished us with a free kick. It was almost telegraphed, we should have known. It was an obvious move and we fell for it.

"I think they play with a high tempo: t
hey press high up the field very strongly. They try and win the ball back high up in the field and the manager is a good tactician.

"The two central defenders and left-back are really tall and can cause problems and we have to defend it. It is tough for us. It is tough for Premier League sides to defend against these players so it is tough for us.

"We had chances to equalise. The second goal hurt us, left us down for a few minutes. We reactivated with the substitutions: Nico Serrano had chances, Selton Sánchez got into the game and Asier Hierro moved well.

"We’re Athletic Club and know we need to keep giving chances to these players who are good. The future of the club depends on them. If they got on it’s because they worked for it and are good. They showed they’re capable of it."

"A two-goal margin is a shame because we put more than that into the game.”

Headers from Dan Burn and Joelinton gave Eddie Howe's side a third successive Champions League success at St.James' Park on Wednesday night - leaving them sixth in the table and with renewed hope of progressing to the knockout stages of the competition.

The Magpies defender set his side on their way to victory against a below-strength Athletic side 11 minutes after the first whistle, latching on to Kieran Trippier's free kick to loop in a superb effort that echoed his landmark Carabao Cup Final goal at Wembley Stadium back in March.

Pressing forward in a successful ploy to pressurise the hosts on the edge of their own box, Bilbao themselves came desperately close to a 19th minute equaliser when Adama Boiro rattled the goal frame. A combination of Nick Pope and his near post then kept a Unai Gomez shot out.

United's clinching second goal followed four minutes into the second period; Harvey Barnes seeing his initial shot on goal bounce back to him and looping in a cross that the unmarked Joelinton nodded in.

The Brazilian had just failed to give United a sixth minute lead, finishing well when just offside. Scoring one that counted was timely, given the justified criticism that following his coasting display at West Ham last time out.

Further home goals could have followed: Nick Woltemade not too far away with a trademark flick and Anthony Elanga unable to get sufficient contact from close range after an unselfish centre by Jacob Murphy. The Swede came off the bench to occupy the left wing but again wasn't impactful.

Multiple substitutions by both sides in the closing stages led to some moments of slight panic in the home defence as the Basques enjoyed their best spell after giving senior debuts to a pair of Academy graduates, but couldn't make the breakthrough that would have made for a nervy finale.

A thoroughly merited three points came without Newcastle showing the attacking fluency that they had in the home conquest of Benfica; the scoreline and the performance reminiscent of last week's Carabao Cup win over Spurs when Howe's side did what they needed to do without fanfare.

The end result though is a very favourable position - two points short of the total that secured playoff qualification last season with four games still to play and at this point harbouring aspirations (or delusions) of a top eight finish and automatic progression to the Round of 16. Heady stuff.

United's quest to extend their winning home run and banish thoughts of Sunday's no-show at West Ham was boosted by Athletic's injury crisis. Ernesto Valverde made seven changes from the starting line-up that defeated Qarabag last time out, absentees including both Neco and Inaki Williams plus Gorka Guruzeta - the latter netting twice against Azebaijanis.

Lewis Hall made a welcome return from the bench following a six game absence through injury, quickly showing what his side have been lacking at left back despite the honest endeavours of Burn in that role. Trippier's return on the opposite side meanwhile brought a reassuring presence missing in E20.

Less positively, an uninspiring shift from Anthony Gordon ended prematurely before half time when he left the field in some discomfort - the speed that his replacement Murphy was ready underlining the fact that Gordon may well have been a doubtful starter.

Continuing to fight on two (home) fronts in the cups, attention now switches to the Premier League and the vexed subject of our away form. Next up is a first visit to Brentford since a 2-4 loss there almost a year ago after which we called the team "routinely haphazard".

Then comes an international break hopefully followed by the appearance of Tino Livramento and Yoane Wissa - the latter timely to give Woltemade some relief; tonight seeing him routinely dropping deep and lacking support. The parts are all there, fettling them into something that consistently works regardless of venue or prestige remains a challenge. As for Elanga, not a clue frankly...
