With results elsewhere ending hopes of a knockout stage place, Newcastle's U21 side rounded off their EFL Trophy fixtures with defeat at a rain-soaked Wetherby Road on Tuesday.

Already assured of progression to the last 32, the hosts needed to avoid defeat in order to top Northern Group F ahead of Huddersfield Town and earn a home draw.

League Two Harrogate went ahead when Ellis Taylor cut in from the right wing in the 12th minute, before firing beyond James Taylor.

The green-clad Magpies were level at the break, after Harrison Ashby teed up Alfie Harrison to find the net with a left-footed effort in the fourth minute of added time.

Town regained the lead thanks to a 64th minute shot from Tom Cursons that went in off a post.

The Harrogate substitute had another strike ruled out for offside three minutes later but wasn't to be denied a second and was in the right place to net 12 minutes from time, after Ellis Taylor's shot was blocked and the ball ran free to him.
