Adam Lawrence said:

"“The clean sheet is the positive - but not only that but I think the lads deserved the clean sheet for being so defensively solid and restricting the opposition to minimal chances.

"How we built from the back and progressed our play was good but we were just lacking a little in the final third with the decisions in and around the box and the lads were a bit frustrated with that."

Stats

With no equivalent side in the U21 age range, the visitors fielded an XI comprising of players born in 2004 or later who are in their B team, C team and
and "Juvenil A" (U19) team.

Newcastle entered this competition for only the third time since it was established in 2014. All group stage ties are now between domestic and overseas sides, avoiding the previous situation where domestic sides faced each other and overseas ones also played each other in the UK.

Newcastle U21s began their Premier League International Cup fixtures on Tuesday, playing out an incident-free draw against Spanish opposition at a sodden Whitley Park.

A small crowd saw a game of few chances: what proved to be Newcastle's most dangerous moment coming when Alfie Harrison's early corner kick struck the crossbar.

At the other end, goalkeeper James Taylor denied Dario Ramirez before the full time whistle sounded and those present squelched their way home - perhaps thankful that there's no requirement for extra time or penalties in the group stage of the competition.

The second of Newcastle's group games sees PSG provide the opposition at Whitley Park on Friday.

The Magpies then conclude their Group C ties by hosting Croatia Zagreb in December and Benfica in January. The format of the 32 team competition means that none of the 16 Premier League teams meet, but each host four continental sides.
