Adam Lawrence said:

"I don’t think we have learnt anything massively different in terms of where they are at and what we are trying to do with them in terms of this part of the journey.

"I think it’s just the pleasing thing for them is how many times do you get play under the lights against PSG and that type of opposition.

“You look at tomorrow night, our first team are playing Man City, a team full of top international players all over the pitch in a top Premier League game. That’s where we want our players to aspire to play in - but it’s obviously really tough to do that.

"Games like today are those types of game at youth level so it gets the players tested and going toe-to-toe against the best young players in Europe and there’s enough in there to show we have some talented individuals in there.”

Stats

The absence of Sean Neave and Alex Murphy was due to senior team call-ups to the bench for the PL home game against Manchester City the following night.

Newcastle entered this competition for only the third time since it was established in 2014. All group stage ties are now between domestic and overseas sides, avoiding the previous situation where domestic sides faced each other and overseas ones also played each other in the UK.

Following a 0-0 home draw with Real Sociedad on Tuesday night, United's second U21 Premier League International Cup tie brought PSG to Whitley Park on Friday night.

Clad in their blue and orange change kit, the Magpies reached half time two goals behind and one man down - Scott Bailey shown a straight red in the 43rd minute.

PSG's 27th minute opener came when Khalil Ayari netted with a rising shot from a narrow angle to the right of the goal, but United failed to heed the warning and conceded again just three minutes later.

This time Mohamed-Amine El Idrissi ghosted through the home defence and wrong-footed Max Thompson before steering a low shot home.

Bailey then looked to be harshly censured for a high challenge, catching Diyinu Nzinga on the back of the leg with his studs in the centre of the field.

Ironically the visiting player didn't make a meal of that challenge, in stark contrast to some of his colleagues who continually threw themselves to the ground under the most minimal of contact.

Referee Zac Kennard-Kettle finally tired of this French farce, booking Ilyes Housni for a theatrical tumble in the box.

Despite being a man down in the second period the hosts put up a decent fight, creating chances to reduce the deficit but failing to test PSG custodian Arthur Vignaud.

Miodrag Pivas looped a header following a free-kick narrowly wide before fellow defender Charlie McArthur similarly put a headed effort off-target from Leo Shahar's corner kick.
