We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"
The mindset was key and the attitude. The energy was back that was missing against Brentford and West Ham. Our running ability and power was there. Our technical ability was there too, which hasn't always been the case.

"We were brave in our approach. We tried to be aggressive, and we got rewarded that at times, they punish you for that at times, so you are always on a bit of a knife-edge against them.

Thankfully Nick
(Pope) made some good saves when needed them and we got the goals at good times.

"That was the reaction we wanted. We had a long wait in between the Brentford game and this game and in some respect that was probably a good thing because it allowed us time to reflect, the time to work, and the players who stayed will vouch for that.

"We tried to re-find our energy and our athleticism through training. We tried to then instil that into the guys who came back from international duty that this is what we've worked on and this is what we need to deliver, and the players didn't let us down.

"They were magnificent today. The heart and energy and athleticism was there and it needed to be because playing such a good opponent, one mistake and you're going to get punished.

"I thought it was a really high-level game between two really good teams.

"It's been a long wait for a win against Pep (Guardiola) (this was the first of Howe's career as a manager in a league game). He's an incredible manager. We're just delighted to win tonight.

"The heart, the endeavour, the attitude of the group pleased me today. Compared to the game against Brentford, where we looked tired, that was a big upturn.

"Very very pleased - it should give us a big lift in a tough Premier League season.

"The challenge now is to keep it up. We have two huge games against Marseille and Everton now. We need to have the identity we played with today.

On his side's home form compared to that away from SJP:

"As much as I'd like to say the crowd shouldn't make the difference to the players on the pitch, it changes everything. We have to figure out a way to transfer some positive energy into our performances away when we don't have the crowd.

"That's going to be for us to fix, whether that's system related, personnel related.

"Whatever it is, we need to work hard to figure it out."

On Harvey Barnes:

"I think Harvey is an outstanding player. He's always a goal threat. He could have scored four today with the chances he had, but what I love about Harvey is he's never rattled by missing."

On Nick Woltemade:

"Nick played his part today - I was really pleased he was getting the chance today. He has done really well to score with the chances he has had with us, but we need to create more for him, and he needs to do better in some situations.

"They were there for him today, and the goalkeeper has made a couple of saves to deny him, but it was very evident that he was a threat in the game."

On his match-winning tactics:

"My opinion is whatever strategy you pick, City will make chances. We tried to pick the style that would suit us best.

Our centre-halves did so well against (Erling) Haaland today - we're really pleased with our output."

On the midfield:

"He's a brilliant player (Bruno Guimaraes). I have the pleasure of working with him, and he's a brilliant leader. Today he was at the heartbeat of everything good.

"I thought Joelinton had his best game for a long time, and Sandro (Tonali) did well playing slightly higher up."

They Said

Pep Guardiola said:

"Tight game. Chances. Entertaining game. At the end they scored two goals and we scored one. (Our performance) was really good in general. We had chances. In the second half we had more chances but unfortunately today we could not finish.

"I know that the intensity and high pressing is really good and unfortunately we could not, in the second half when we had chances, they won duels. They provoked this kind of game and it was difficult.

"We gave it our all. We wanted to move forward, as we have done these last two months, but it's not an easy place to be after the international break. There is still a very, very, very long way to go.

"It was a close match, with chances for both teams. Gigio
(Donnarumma) was outstanding.

"We missed opportunities and in the second half, we conceded two goals. There were many opportunities, on both sides, but we weren't able to get a good result."

On Donnarumma's complaining - and yellow card:

"If he complained, it's because something wrong happened. The same happened in Bournemouth. It's what it is."

On a post-match clash with the on-field cameraman:

"I felt embarrassed, ashamed when I saw it. I don't like it. I apologised to the camera
(operator) after one second... I am who I am. Even after 1,000 games I'm not a perfect person, I make huge mistakes. What is for sure I defend my team and my club. That's for sure."

Stats

Newcastle defeated Manchester City in the Premier League for the first time in 13 attempts since Rafa Benitez presided over a 2-1 success at SJP in January 2019.

Only Fabian Schar appeared in both the 2019 and 2025 wins for United, while Jacob Murphy was an unused substitute as Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie netted against Pep & Co. six years ago.

Newcastle registered their sixth successive home win in all competitions, something that Eddie Howe has overseen just once previously as Magpies boss, doing so between February and April 2022.

Harvey Barnes scored his 17th Premier League goal for United, drawing level with Yohan Cabaye in our all-time scoring list for that competition.

Barnes is the first Magpie to net more than once in a game against City since Alan Shearer's brace during a 3-0 PL home sucess 22 years to the day, on November 22nd 2003.

Barnes now has 20 goals in all competitions for United, his three PL strikes and three Champions League goals so far this season, putting him level with Nick Woltemade as our top scorer on six.

Lewis Hall made his 50th PL appearance for United; Joe Willock reached 150 league and games.

A fourth PL goal for Ruben Dias was his first since December 2021, which had also come at SJP.

Arrow, arrow, we are the Geordie boys

Newcastle's stuttering Premier League season burst into life at Gallowgate on Saturday night, thanks to a pair of timely second half strikes from Harvey Barnes.

The United winger had twice gone close to putting the hosts ahead before the break, but made no mistake when a third, more difficult chance came his way in the 63rd minute - sending a scorching shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

That lead was to be short-lived however; Ruben Dias firing through the legs of Fabian Schar following a corner at the Leazes End to draw City level within just five minutes.

Eight minutes after his opener, Barnes was reaching into his invisible quiver once again in celebration of another goal, this one from much closer range after a header by Bruno Guimaraes hit the crossbar.

The scorer and home fans endured a five minute wait until VAR dismissed two potential offside claims, City also moaning in vain about interference on Donnarumma after Sandro Tonali's corner kick that began the sequence and an alleged foul by Nick Woltemade as Jacob Murphy centred from the right.

Retrospective City claims regarding a foul on Bert Trautmann as Jackie Milburn scored in the 1955 FA Cup Final and Tino Asprilla sticking the nut on Keith Curle at Maine Road remain pending....

Much of the build-up to this game had dwelt on the fact that City's Erling Haaland was on 99 Premier League goals, but it was Eddie Howe who ended the day as a centurion - celebrating a 100th league and cup victory shortly after beginning his fifth year in charge of the Magpies and defeating City in aa league game for the first time in his entire managerial career.

Persisting with the same front six that had started the 1-3 loss at Brentford before the international break, Howe also retained Nick Pope but was able to call upon Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento at left and right back respectively.

Missing Dan Burn due to suspension after his dismissal at Brentford, Fabian Schar was preferred to Sven Botman alongside Malick Thiaw, the Dutchman coming off the bench to join them late on after Hall's withdrawal - Jacob Murphy dropping back.

Having spoken about trying to achieve a reset of his team's season during the last international break and sat through hours of game footage in an attempt to do so, the Magpies boss drew a heartening response from his players that was in stark contrast to the dross of West Ham and Brentford.

That almost got off to an incredible start when Barnes tested Donnarumma after just 25 seconds - Woltemade seeing a shot and a header saved before Barnes wastefully blazed wide on the half hour.

At the other end Haaland put City's first chance wide, Phil Foden also twice failing to test Pope with the United goal at his mercy - one of those off-target shots followed by a failed VAR check for a penalty after Schar caught him on the ankle - Craig Pawson showing leniency on us for once.

Barnes understandably took the plaudits for his goals and getting in the position to try and score, resulting in the biggest intervention by a player of that name in a game by these two sides since Peter in the 1976 League Cup Final. It was very far from a one man show however.

Sandro Tonali was back to his best and Thiaw expertly handled the threat of Haaland on a day when the entire Newcastle team looked to have been boosted by the return of the full back duo.

The two most pleasing displays this season before this had both ended in narrow home losses - to Liverpool and Arsenal, but tonight was arguably Newcastle's most significant win since the Carabao Cup Final in March. Ending a six year, 12 game wait for maximum points against Pep's lot was also timely in itself, never mind the within the context of the entire season.

Having looked polite to the point of anonymity in recent weeks, this game also saw the return of what is now crudely and regularly referred to as shithousery from the black and whites. That's not always possible to achieve on the road, but on home turf tonight it was more than evident - the visitors arguably contributing to it given the antics of Jeremy Doku and some of the City bench.

Whether we can replicate this sort of all-round display against lesser opponents or can only get up for the challenge of esteemed foes remains to be seen, but given the run of games we face, there's ample opportunity to show that we're big game hunters - starting on Tuesday in France.
