Newcastle's U21 side concluded their National League Cup group stage
on Tuesday night with a goalless draw at The Shay,
losing the subsequent penalty shootout.
Needing to defeat hosts FC Halifax
Town to reach the knockout stages at their expense, a strangely
cautious display from Adam Lawrence's side never looked liked producing a goal
until visiting defender Miodrag Pivas shook the crossbar with an 88th
minute shot following a corner.
The hosts also struck the goal frame, through Jay Turner-Cooke's
long-distance free kick on 69 minutes. The former Magpie then burst
into the box only to theatrically tumble over in a failed attempt at
winning a penalty kick but managed to avoid a booking
Newcastle's failure to take three points from the tie then made the
shootout for the extra point entirely academic:
Alfie Harrison, Ben Parkinson, Scott Bailey, Charlie McArthur, Dylan
Charlton and Cathal Heffernan converting, but home custodian
Nathaniel Ford denying
Joe Brayson and Darren Palmer while Ciaran Thompson hit the bar.
United's James Taylor was equal to efforts from David Kawa and Cody
Johnson meanwhile, but couldn't prevent Zak Emmerson from slotting home the
eighteenth penalty of the evening.
