Adam Lawrence said:
"If you look at the way we started the game and then conceding so
early in the second half, it’s takes the momentum away and
gives the lads a mountain to climb.
"In a period when we aren’t scoring loads of goals, we have
kept some clean sheets but today was a step back in terms of
when we conceded and against good teams you make it too hard
for yourself.
"They are harsh, harsh lessons from today.
"The disappointing thing was that it’s the more senior players
in the team and the backbone of the team.
"The goalkeeper and the two centre-halves, yes it’s a team game and
there are other things happening, they’ve played a big part in
conceding those goals. It’s a funny one where it’s senior players
but we have to learn, there’s no other way to put it."

The absence of Sean Neave and
Leo Shahar was due to senior team
call-ups to the bench for the PL home game against Chelsea played at
the same time as this U21 tie.
Newcastle entered this competition for only the third time since it was established in 2014. All
group stage ties are now between domestic and overseas sides, avoiding the
previous situation where domestic sides faced each other and overseas ones also
played each other in the UK.

United's winless and goalless start to this season's
Premier League International Cup
lengthened to three games following Saturday's loss to
Croatian opposition at Whitley Park.
Zagreb arrived on Tyneside with maximum points from their
opening two games and almost immediately went ahead when
Kaloyan Bozhkov fired past James Taylor.
Sven Sunta then doubled that lead five minutes after half time
before Patrik Horvat completed the scoring on 70 minutes.
Newcastle came close to scoring in the closing stages, but
Matheos Ferreira's lob was cleared from inside the six yard
box and a Charlie McArthur effort was ruled out for offside
- meaning that it's 495 minutes since the U21s last netted.
With just one point from three games, United cannot advance
to the knockout stages and will conclude their Group C
fixtures against Benfica at Whitley Park on Tuesday January 13th 2026 (7pm) - which
also now clashes with a first team fixture.
