2 mins Anthony Gordon
set off down the left and his cross took a slight deflection that sent it
into the path of Joelinton, on the left side of the box. His first
time effort looped over the stranded Martin Dubravka and into the opposite
side of the net.
1-0

A goalmouth scramble
initiated by Dubravka fumbling a shot from Barnes saw Bruno knocking the loose ball to
Yoane Wissa. His first effort
was cleared off the line by Kyle Walker but then turned home by the
number nine.
2-0

23 mins
Lucas Pires took a pass from Marcus Edwards in a central spot outside the
United box. His shot rebounded back off a colleague and he looped over a
cross at the second time of asking.
Armando Broja rose above Lewis Hall to flick the ball on and
a clean strike by Josh
Laurent from the right hand corner of the six yard box gave him a first PL
goal.
2-1

90+3 mins Sandro
Tonali's speculative forward ball was beyond Nick Woltemade, with Hjalmar
Ekdal holding his position as Dubravka came out of his area to clear. The
Burnley goalkeeper looked to lose his footing and as Woltemade crucially
tangled with Ekdal, the ball rolled towards Bruno Guimaraes, who
arced home a left-footed effort from 30 yards out.

Eddie
Howe said:
"It was a massive win for us. I don't think it really matters
tonight so much in
terms of how we did it, we just needed to do it. It was a really
strong start from us, in recognition of how important the game was
for us.
"I can't praise the players enough for how we battled through. It
was never going to be easy tonight. That second half was a massive
45 minutes for us, we needed to get over the line and full credit to
the players for how they saw the game out and the character of the
group.
"I think we've been close before. In my opinion, we're moving in the
right direction in terms of level of performance.
"I think over time, if you continue to play well - I thought
Manchester United was a case in point, I don't think we played
badly, we had chances to get something from the game but didn't take
them - then over time, you will win games with the quality of
players we have.
"I think that showed today. We're not at our most confident level at
the moment, I think that's obvious. But I do think it's a confidence
issue more than anything else and the only way to resolve that is to
win games.
"It's easy to say we should have shown more
control, we should have done this, we should have done that. Of
course we will look to endeavour to do that as we move forward, but
we're maybe not in that psychological moment to do that.
"Maybe in former times we would have done. The
challenge is to get the players to the level where we can do that again.
"The unity of the club from supporters to the team has been our key
strength. If you lose that, you’ve got big problems, but we’ve always felt
the support from the matchday supporters. We needed them tonight.”
On Yoane Wissa's style compared to Nick Woltemade:
"That was the thinking behind signing the two players, they are very
different.
"Yoane is more the traditional number nine. He wants to run in behind, he
has a very good sense of scoring goals, he’s in the right place at the right
time and that was highlighted by his goal.”
Scott Parker said:
"There's elements of frustration. We gave
ourselves a mountain to climb. The two goals were really sloppy - silly goals to
concede.
"We just didn’t get started and it makes it really difficult to get a result in
the Premier League when you’re two down so early on.
"The mentality, desire and adversity we showed to going
down 2-0 early on is what pleased me. I’m just so frustrated because there
were so many positives to take despite the defeat.
"When we go 2-0 down, from that point really up until they scored the
third…we have as a team absolutely committed and it’s the fine margins
again, we can’t just manage to get the goals from the chances we create and
we’re on the end of a poor result.
"We’re in a dogfight and
we’re going to be in a dogfight for the majority of this season.
"You can see teams wilt
away with a lack of energy, lack of commitment or a lack of desire but
there’s something in this group that’s elite. At 2-0 down after seven
minutes you could see a team wilt away and it could have been a whole lot
different but you didn’t see that.
"The second half was full of desire, commitment and quality - I couldn’t
have asked much more of the lads. In adversity and hardship, we stood up. We
didn’t hide. We didn’t disappear. We stood up to the challenge and took the
game to a very good Newcastle side.
"Of course there’s faults in our game - bits of quality in the final moments
and the way we conceded both goals - and we have to sharpen up.
"I’m weak in my words because we’ve again lost a game
despite so many positives. It goes down as a 3-1 loss on paper but it
doesn’t fell like that was a fair reflection. The fight goes on.
"We’ll keep nailing down where we need to improve, and keep doing the good
things we’re doing to keep going."
Two goals within the opening seven minutes represents
the quickest start that Newcastle have ever made in the 584 Premier
League games they've played away from SJP.
It's marginally quicker than the 2-0 lead they opened up at
Leicester City in seven minutes on Boxing Day 2022, thanks to a
Chris Wood penalty (3 minutes) and Miggy Almiron's strike (7
minutes). United won that one 3-0.
The quickest before that came at West Bromwich Albion in February
2009 when Damien Duff (2 minutes) and Peter Lovenrkrands (9 minutes)
initiated a 3-2 success.
That exceeded the 10 minutes that it took the Magpies to establish a
two goal lead at Manchester United during October 2018 (Kenedy 7 and
Muto 10). They lost 2-3.
Joelinton's 65 second strike is the second quickest by any
Magpie so far this season, beaten by Malick Thiaw's 52 second
header in the win at Everton in November.
In PL games, we make it the fourth fastest on the road and eleventh fastest
in all:
Jan 2003 Manchester City (h) Alan Shearer 10 seconds
Dec 2020 West Brom (h) Miguel Almiron 20 seconds
Dec 2024 Ipswich Town (a) Alexander Isak 26 seconds
Jul 2020 Liverpool (h) Dwight Gayle 26 seconds
Nov 2025 Everton (a) Malick Thiaw 52 seconds
Jan 1996 Arsenal (h) David Ginola 56 seconds
Mar 2004 Charlton Athletic (h) Alan Shearer 57 seconds
Apr 2023 Spurs (h) Jacob Murphy 61 seconds
Feb 2009 West Brom (a) Damien Duff 64 seconds
Mar 2018 Southampton (h) Kenedy 64 seconds
Dec 2025 Burnley (a) Joelinton 65 seconds
United
registered a first PL win double of the season after the 2-1
home victory earlier this month, although they are yet to face
Crystal Palace at home or away.
Newcastle's second away win of the season gives them nine
points from a possible 27 away from SJP. That figure was 15 at the
same point in 2024/25 but just five in 2023/24. Three points here
meant that the current Magpies side are no longer in worse away form
than their 2008/09 and 2015/16 relegation-bound counterparts: both
had seven points at the same point.
Less pleasingly, they have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of
their last 12 PL games, since the 2-0 home win over
Nottingham Forest in early October 2025. In all competitions, the
barren run is also 12, since the 2-0 Champions League home
victory over Bilbao in early November 2025..
The Magpies lengthened their winning PL run
against Burnley to eight games, completing a fourth
consecutive win double.
They last lost to the Clarets in December 2019, a 0-1 loss in
Lancashire with Martin Dubravka, Joelinton and Fabian Schar in the
United line-up and Nick Pope in the home side.
A fourth consecutive three point return at Turf Moor was Newcastle's
fifth win in eight visits here, alongside two draws and one defeat. They
are yet to keep a clean sheet here in the PL though and haven't done
so in any top flight visit since a 1-0 First Division success on
Boxing Day 1975.
Yoane Wissa became the 173rd
different player to have netted for the Magpies in the PL and the 23rd
from that total to have been born in France.
Joelinton made his 200th PL appearance for United (172
starts) scoring his fourth goal of the season in all competitions,
but a first in the PL since one at Manchester United a year to the
day. His 23rd PL strike takes him one ahead of Laurent Robert,
drawing level with Miggy Almiron and Kieron Dyer.
Bruno Guimaraes scored his sixth PL goal of the season - his
fifth coming against Burnley at SJP. That total is one fewer than
his most prolific PL campaign, registering seven during 2023/24.
The Brazilian's 27th PL effort moves him one
ahead of Michael Owen and level with Craig Bellamy.

Bruno Guimaraes may have added an "at the wheel" gesture to his goal
celebrations at Turf Moor, but his side struggled for control,
lacking due care and attention before belatedly banking three
points.
Despite racing into a two goal lead inside the first seven minutes -
their fastest start to any Premier League away game - that advantage
was soon halved as a Burnley side winless in their previous nine
games began to expose some of Newcastle's familiar failings and
fragility.
Almost from the moment that Yoane Wissa added to Joelinton's opner, Eddie Howe's
latest return to his old club became increasingly uncomfortable and
after conceding midway through the first half, the black and whites
struggled to establish any element of mastery on proceedings.
The crossbar, Nick Pope and Fabian Schar all kept the
Clarets at bay before Martin Dubravka's slip saw Bruno Guimaraes
chip in from 30 yards during second half added time amid palpable
relief.
United could easily have scored half a dozen and
conceded a similar number; both sides creating and wasting a
boatload of chances, while goal line clearances also prevented home
and away goals.
A quartet of changes to the side beaten at Old Trafford on Boxing
Day included Yoane Wissa's first Premier League start and the
restoration of Pope, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes to the starting
eleven - the latter in his home town, Burnley-born in 1997 when his
dad Paul was a Clarets player.
The Magpies were ahead just over a minute from the first whistle; Anthony Gordon's deflected cross falling to Joelinton who volleyed it
inside the far post with Dubravka well beaten.
Wissa soon doubled the lead from close range at the second attempt:
celebrations of his first Premier League goal for the club on hold until a
VAR check confirmed no foul on Josh Laurent by Bruno in the build-up.
More goals should have followed but Wissa put a far post header
following a corner wide from
just yards out and Barnes was then denied by Dubravka when through
on goal.
At the other end Schar cleared off the line when Marcus Edwards had
beaten Pope from inside the box.
The second half saw United penned back in their own
half, Pope denying Edwards, Laurent looping
a header off the crossbar and Loum Tchaouna heading wide soon when
unattended at the back post.
Gradually though the threat from the home side dissipated, reflected
by a quietening of the home support and their tales of times past
with the Ewood enemy. Newcastle's replacements proved to be more
influential than Burnley's, aside from the "oh no, is this &%$
still playing?" moment when Ashley Barnes appeared, almost 15
years since we first set eyes on his twisty face.
Some of the activity around the United dugout didn't lead to
predicted changes however. Concerns over Lewis Hall after he twice
required treatment on a knee saw Alex Murphy readying himself, while
rookie right back Leo Shahar was twice sent out to warm up,
prompting thoughts that Lewis Miley could be moved into midfield to
try and stem the claret and blue tide.
The killer third United goal wouldn't come though: Malick Thiaw's goalbound flick on a Joelinton header was nodded off the line
by Bashir Humphreys, Jacob Murphy fired over from close in, although Wissa was offside in the build-up
and Gordon wastefully clearing the crossbar with the goal gaping.
Scott Parker's side kept plugging away into added time but when a hopeful ball
forward by Sandro Tonali was messed up by Dubravka outside his area,
Bruno's composed finish found the unguarded goal and secured a vital
victory. That was the Brazilian's second December goal of the month
contender against the same goalkeeper following on from his
Gallowgate corner kick conversion.
Temporarily taking them into the top half of the table, this victory was
far more important than the painful performance: a
result that clearly came as a relief for manager, players and fans
hopefully a staging post to somewhere ahead of a quartet of home
games in a trio of competitions.
A rather happier post-match return than four days previously
highlighted continuing concerns over the hole that keeps appearing
in front of the back four and also the theory that a lack of
on-pitch leaders contributes to our panic - shadow armband wearers
like Burn or Trippier influencing those around them as much as
Bruno, who was among those culpable in giving the ball away cheaply.
Thankfully though, the final individual contribution of the captain
tonight proved to be decisive.
