Half time: Magpies 0 Eagles 0

Head boy
71 mins
A canny piece of play by
Bruno Guimaraes won a free kick towards the right hand side of the
Palace box. That was clipped in by Jacob Murphy, ending up with Harvey
Barnes following a headed clearance by Maxence Lacroix.
Barnes delivered a through ball towards the back post and as the ball ran
past debutant Brennan Johnson, Miley made contact and touched it across
goal. Bruno met the ball on the bounce, directing a header from four yards
into the side of the goal that Henderson had left unguarded.
1-0

78 mins
Bruno's swooping flag
kick from the Strawberry Corner reached the front post, Joelinton jumping
but failing to help the ball on as intended. His leap was sufficient to
prevent Jean-Philippe Mateta from making contact and the ball ran through to
Henderson.
The visiting 'keeper instinctively pushed it out into the six yard box,
where it rattled off Marc Guehi and Lacroix standing in close proximity,
dropping for Malick Thiaw to stab home from close in.
2-0

Eddie Howe said:
"It was a tough game, it always is against Palace. Oliver (Glasner)
has done
an amazing job. We had to be patient. It was bitty at times. I think
the substitutions made a difference and helped us over the lines.
"I think they were two good moves for the goals that weren't. We
needed that first goal to relax us. I think we got better and better
in the game.
"It's the type of tight game that we needed to turn it
to our favour today. I think a typical Premier League game this
year, very, very difficult to get total control of the game. I
thought Crystal Palace are a very difficult opponent.
"Every time we've played them, it's been tight. They're stubborn and
their defensive performances this season have been very good, so
they're a tough side to create and score against.
"The fact that we had to bide our time and we had to be patient, we
navigated our way through the game really well. And I thought the
substitutes made a good difference when they came on and that's tribute to
the squad, really, for the strength that we have.
"We wanted to get Harvey's (Barnes) goal-scoring instinct onto the
pitch, and I thought he did really well, Harvey, when he came on, I think he
made a big difference.
"As I say, we shifted Bruno’s position. We wanted JJ's control with
the ball, he's very, very solid and reliable with the ball, and I think
maybe an underrated quality of his is his ball retention. I felt he gave us
much better control in that midfield area.
"And Tino (Livramento), we just wanted his energy and his quality,
it's undoubted how good Tino is. And I felt there was space on the sides of
the pitch, so that's why we made the three changes.”
On Bruno Guimaraes:
"Bruno is a very special
player, person and character.
"He's very positive, has great
energy and played a captain's role because that game was always
going to be decided by a very key moment - and he has come up with
the big one for us. He's done it countless times.
"Your big players normally
decide big games and today was a big game for us decided by a huge
player in our recent history."
On Lewis Miley:
"He's been incredible since he came into the team.
"You wouldn't know it (isn't in his natural position). He's
excelled in this position (at right back).
He's doing a great job in the team."
On securing successive PL wins:
"It's a better position but we've got more work to do - we've got a
massive month ahead.
"We need to build some momentum and confidence and today is a big
step forward."
Oliver Glasner
said:
"Disappointing defeat, disappointing result. Most
disappointing for me is conceding another two goals from set plays. In five
of our last six defeats – Strasbourg, Man United, Leeds, Tottenham and today
– we just conceded goals from set pieces.
"You can't win games like
this and this is what we have to get sorted. It's my responsibility to give
the players better solutions, so they feel more comfortable and can defend
this in a better way.
"It's always a second
phase where we are not really structured and then conceding goals.
"There were many parts of the game that I was really
pleased with. We played really well. We didn't give them chances from open
play until the last few minutes when we went all in to get the goal.
"We defended really well.
We created a few good situations, we had a big chance straight before half
time. With all the circumstances, making a concussion sub in the first half
(Lerma) and
another substitution straight after half time due to Clyne’s injury, showing
a performance where a point was possible, but we have to solve the problem
of conceding goals from set plays – there’s so many.
"There are a few
explanations. Without Chris Richards, we don't have one of our best headers
in the box available. Ismaila (Sarr) is not here (on AFCON
duty with Senegal) and he has a key role on the near post and is also
quite tall. Daniel Munoz has a good presence with his physicality.
"Bringing in smaller
players and then losing one of our best headers in the first half in
Jefferson Lerma. When he got injured, it was the same ball where we conceded
a goal in the second half, he just cleared it because he's really great in
these situations.
"We don't have so many
other headers like that. This won't change until Wednesday (against
Aston Villa). This won't change until Macclesfield (in the FA Cup on
Saturday). It's my job to find better solutions. Right now, I have to
admit that I have completely failed.”

Eddie Howe's side are now unbeaten in their last 11 home league and cup fixtures,
managing to keep a first clean sheet in 13 Premier League games and only
their sixth PL shutout of the season.
A seventh Premier League goal of the season for Bruno Guimaraes
saw him match his highest total, recorded in the 2023/24 season.
The Brazilian has now netted 28 PL goals for the Magpies,
taking him level with Obafemi Martins
and one behind both Gary Speed and Demba Ba.
Malick Thiaw netted his third goal for the club, all of which
have come in the PL.
Anthony Gordon
played his 100th PL game for United (79 starts) while Fabian Schar made a 250th
appearance in all competitions (227 starts) as a Magpie. The Swiss
defender wore a bespoke shirt with that total embroidered on it,
Since Gary Cahill beat Karl Darlow to conclude a 2-1 win for Roy
Hodgson's Eagles in February 2021, no Palace player has scored for
them at Gallowgate in 605 minutes.

Close-range efforts from Bruno Guimaraes and Malick
Thiaw gave Newcastle a winning start to 2026 on Sunday, as they
recorded back-to-back league victories for only the second time this season.
The Magpies twice had the ball in the Eagles net during an
unremarkable first half, only for Anthony Gordon and Joelinton's
celebrations to be halted by offside calls. There was
nothing wrong with the 71st minute opener from United's captain
however,
rising to head home at the Gallowgate End after Lewis Miley diverted a Harvey Barnes
centre back across goal.
That goal came just moments after Bruno's corner shaved the
crossbar and another flag kick from United's captain
ended with Thiaw prodding home the second goal for his side on 78
minutes - Marc Guehi getting a touch en route but avoiding the ignominy of a
third successive OG against United.
Bruno again almost inspired a third United goal during second half
added time, setting Barnes through on goal for Dean Henderson to
block the shot and Joe Willock flash a shot wide of the target when
it looked easier to score.
United took to the field with one change from the starting line-up
at Turf Moor on Tuesday; Jacob Murphy replacing Barnes on the right
flank with Anthony Elanga absent due to injury for a third game.
A trio of defenders - Kieran Trippier, Tino Livramento and Sven
Botman - all returned to the bench while Lewis Miley continued at
right back for a fifth league and cup game.
Yoane Wissa led the line and came close to another early Magpies
goal, a headband-less Gordon teeing him up for what was a
disappointing effort straight at Henderson.
Without mounting an onslaught on the Palace goal, United created a
handful of efforts bookending Gordon's disallowed 20th minute effort
and Joelinton's close to the break: Fabian Schar's header and a
powerful Lewis Hall strike both requiring intervention from
Henderson.
There was still time for Oliver Glasner's below-strength side to
threaten; Will Hughes swapping passes with Yeremy Pino only to stretch and poke
a shot just wide
of Nick Pope's goal as Schar closed in.
Having lost Jefferson Lerma after an accidental collision with Thiaw,
Nathaniel Clyne then limped off soon after the restart, further weakening a
Palace side that is the currently second meanest away from home in the
Premier League.
Despite that though, there was little uplift from the Magpies until a trio of
replacements arrived just after the hour, having a positive effect
in building momentum on the Palace goal.
For the umpteenth time this season though, Newcastle's number 39
stepped up to give us exactly what we need - a goal and an assist to
calm those inside Gallowgate and make a positive start to their
quick-fire quartet of home tests.
It may not quite be normal service resumed, but United had a rather more
familiar look about them - from a focused and fit Joelinton to a productive
cameo from Barnes, plus another Miley masterclass.
Reasons to be cheerful: three points, a clean sheet, an improvement to the
goal difference, no new injuries (aside from Murphy's known leg issue) and the return of some key players. Happy
new year.
