Interim Coach Robbie Stockdale said:

"There was a little bit of change. We even had change an hour and a half before kick-off with the line-up (defender Cathal Heffernan was withdrawn due to a possible transfer) but that’s 21s football.

"I think part of the job is to try and put players in the positions and be adaptable because I believe the next step for these players is senior football where managers will change tactics.

"You look at our first-team, they will change formation and work on that and we have to prepare players for that. They’re  a really good team aren't they? They were really good when they came here in the UEFA Youth League. They beat Chelsea by six the other week, I think they’re the best team we have played easily this season.

"We set out a game plan and to a certain degree, it was KO. 3-0 at 80 minutes was probably a fair reflection of the game. To concede the two at the end and we were just hanging on. They were just poor goals to concede - but again, it’s lessons.

"We had four Under-18s starting, another one came on, and that’s against Benfica’s B team, who play senior football every week. It was always going to be difficult and I’m not sure we can judge our players at that level just yet. It’s a great learning curve for them.”

Stats

Newcastle entered this competition for only the third time since it was established in 2014. All group stage ties are now between domestic and overseas sides, avoiding the previous situation where domestic sides faced each other and overseas ones also played each other in the UK.

Newcastle U21s concluded their Premier League International Cup participation at Whitley Park on Tuesday afternoon with a third defeat in four group stage games.

The Portuguese side recorded a 5-1 success at the same venue last October in the UEFA U19 Youth League and dominated a managerless Magpies side once again.

Ahead after 10 minutes when Olivio Tome fired into the roof of the net, Benfica then doubled their lead thanks to a 20th minute header from Leandro Martins.

Livewire attacker Goncalo Moreira caused United all sorts of problems in the U19 meeting and took just six minutes after arriving from the bench to fire his side further ahead.

Moreira then netted the rebound after fellow substitute Francisco Silva's header hit the bar on 85 minutes, before Silva himself rounded off the scoring with a close range header in time added on.
