We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"Fatigue played a part but we are still alive. It’s a body blow (conceding the late second) but not fatal at the moment We’re still in there fighting.

"We won by this scoreline
(2-0) at Arsenal last year and felt the tie was still very much alive. If we can get the next goal we're still very much in it.

On squad shortcomings:

"Defensively we're really stretched. We're pinning our hopes on Dan (Burn) being back pretty soon. That would give us a massive lift and, of course, the transfer market is still available to us.

"We don't think Jacob's
(Murphy) injury is serious. But of course, we're waiting to see the full extent. He's had a hamstring problem for a couple of weeks. He's had two scans that have come back clear, so we're not quite sure what's going on with him.
"

On Yoane Wissa's early miss:

"Looking back with hindsight, you'd say that's potentially a big turning point. We wanted to get the crowd fully into the match. Manchester City want to do the opposite by retaining the ball and calm the crowd down, also it's always that dynamic by the two teams.

"Yoane's a top player. He's still finding his very best level after a long time injured. Maybe in a couple more weeks that might've gone in.

"All I can look at is the effort levels of the players, and I think considering Saturday's efforts that we gave against Bournemouth, that was a great effort from the guys against the worst side that could expose that fatigue."

On conceding the second goal:

"It's a body blow but not fatal at the moment. We're still in there fighting. I think maybe a bit of naivety with a minute to go on the clock, that we're still trying to chase a goal.

"In that moment, we needed to defend after we got our structure wrong from that position, and we got punished.

"I think the lads gave everything today under difficult circumstances after the extra time on Saturday (
against Bournemouth in the FA Cup). There was a bit of fatigue in our performance, but I can't fault the players."

On
Antoine Semenyo being eligible to play:

"I don't think bitter is the right word, I think the rules are the rules. They're there, I don't think I can focus on that too much.

"I'd probably like to focus more on the fact we had 10 men when they scored their first goal because I just don't get that.

"JJ's (Jacob Ramsey) gone down with a head injury, he gets an elbow in the head and we get punished for that. I don't see that that's right."

On City's disallowed goal:

"It's not that I don't care. I'm pleased that it's ruled out. I've got no opinion because I haven't seen it again."

They Said

Pep Guardiola said:

“We have to be better. That’s why we (have been) champions a lot. We never complain but today I did. I like it and inside it has to be better in all aspects and today we had difficulties with injuries and many things, and we make a step up.”

On the controversial VAR decision:

"I’d like to know why VAR in the 60th minute of the Premier League game against Newcastle, that we lost 2-1, it was 0-0 and it was a penalty for
(Fabian) Schar on Phil Foden, not even consideration. In the 20th minute there is an unbelievable penalty for the shot for Jeremy Doku off the hand, and not even VAR.

Today, four people were not able to decide because the line was, I don’t know, but the second goal Newcastle scored (in November) the line was perfect. I’m not suspicious of that in 10 years.

"I didn’t say anything when we lost 2-1 here. I didn’t say anything in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace - it is a red card after 30 or 40 minutes for (Dean) Henderson. OK, it’s fine, but the fact we didn’t say. I’m pretty sure Howard Webb is going to call me tomorrow to make explanations for that.

“When you play semi-finals or finals and win 0-1, 0-0, 0-2, 1-1, because after 0-1 with five minutes they can equalise and after that it’s more difficult. I’m zero suspicious. In ten years when we lost semi-finals in big competitions, in the league here I didn’t say anything: On the touchline sometimes.

"But come on, in the same stadium, what happened? VAR’s intervened ‘take a look, take a look’ – in the 60th minute, 20th minute, take a look at the two penalties. To come here in the Premier League and win, 0-1 or 0-2 advantage, is a big difference for us. I don’t give any credit to Newcastle.

"I can say they (Newcastle) won deservedly the game in the Premier League but why didn’t (VAR) intervene in these two? Today was more than six minutes (stoppage) and we’re not even able to discuss it with the referee. But they will call me.

"I think
(my players) were angry. For the one action, the momentum immediately went to Newcastle and they were angry.
In these cup competitions, and these semi-finals, or any competition you have to play in that way. It may be it helped us."

On Antoine Semenyo:

"I think what Bournemouth (Semenyo's previous club) have done under (Andoni) Iraola -I think they improved a lot these kind of scrappy goals. In the opposite side right to the box, Leroy (Sane) and Raheem (Sterling) especially were good at that.

“We always encourage the wingers to arrive there. It’s really important to score and it’s no secret you have to bring people in front of the goal.  In the second half
(Semenyo) was much better, with his physicality he helped us defensively."

Newcastle's grip on the Carabao Cup significantly slackened on Tuesday evening, after they conceded two second half goals without reply in the Semi-final first leg at St.James' Park.

Unbeaten in their last thirteen league and cup home games, United almost made a perfect start when Yoane Wissa met Jacob Murphy's cross from the right, but sent his shot over the goal protected by visiting custodian James Trafford.

The remainder of the opening period passed with neither side able to apply sustained pressure and City attempts to gain an advantage including a ploy of goading Joelinton - which bore fruit when he was tempted into a yellow card.

What proved to be the home side's best passage of play came in the early stages of the second half, culminating in Trafford clawing away Wissa's goalbound effort and Bruno rattling a City goalpost with his snap shot seconds later.

Things soon took a turn for the worse though, Eddie Howe's side a man short as Jacob Ramsey waiting to return after treatment when Jeremy Doku's left wing centre was helped on by Bernado Silva and finished by Antoine Semenyo.

Semenyo - who would have been cup-tied after playing for Bournemouth in an earlier round until the divisive rule change - looked to have added further insult to injury when touching in a corner, only for a VAR review to belatedly conclude that Erling Haaland strayed offside and the goal didn't stand.

That gave the home crowd and players fresh impetus and substitute Sandro Tonali clattered a shot just wide of the Gallowgate goal as noise levels rose.

However, United unsuccessfully strove to wipe out the one goal deficit, the effort expended in what in time terms amounted four games in seven days not three unsurprisingly taking a toll. The two best opportunities saw crosses directed to Nick Woltemade, but even his lanky frame couldn't extend to reach one headed opportunity and another just too far in front of his extended foot.

Try as we might, the contribution of Anthony Elanga on his return from injury cannot be expressed in positive terms. Words fail frankly but we're approaching Guivarc'h levels of transfer misadventure.

City sought to take advantage of United's desperation to find an equaliser and Pope did well to deny Haaland. However he was powerless when Rayan Cherki steered home a low shot in the eighth minute of nine added on, having initiated the City attack with an awful clearance into the crowd.

That killer second strike sucked the air out of the stadium, turning the away leg from an unlikely but theoretically achievable mission into something akin to fantasy football. Player availability and the absence of genuine cover from the U21 squad make the debate as to whether Howe's selection calls across the FA Cup and Carabao Cup more complex; extra time and penalties an added headache.

The reality though is that Newcastle's odds of retaining their trophy are now 33/1.

What is in all probability a futile exercise will still require a full-strength side to play in the second leg though: to do anything less would risk a walloping. The City team tonight retained just six of the starting line-up from last Saturday's 10-1 FA Cup rout of Exeter City and will be further augmented by the return of Omar Marmoush from AFCON service. He hit a hat-trick on our last visit to City.

Quite what United's best XI will look like by then is anyone's guess; the little matter of games against Wolves, PSV, Villa, PSG and Liverpool before reaching an Etihad Stadium where we've lost 11 on the bounce and failed to score seven visits since DeAndre Yedlin's goal in 2018. A 2-0 League Cup success in 2014 remains Newcastle's sole league or cup victory there in 22 visits.

Pulling this one out would be our Hereford.
