19 mins In possession
midway inside the United half, Emiliano Buendia hooked a ball to Matty Cash,
overlapping on the Villa right. A smooth exchange of passes involving Amadou
Onano, Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers then led to Buendia regaining the
ball outside the box and he took advantage of Sven Botman's hesitation by
flighting a fine right footer into the far corner of the Leazes net.

An unwise pass from Lewis
Hall on the halfway line to Botman saw Ollie Watkins intercept the ball and
drive forward before sending a dipping effort from outside the box on
target.
Nick Pope pushed that over at the expense of a flag kick that was sent
across from the Strawberry Corner and half-cleared as far as Rogers. He
sprayed the ball left to Lucas Digne, who picked out the unmarked Watkins
arriving at the back post and he nodded it down and in from close range.

Eddie Howe said:
"Missed opportunities for us. Sandro (Tonali)
has the chance at the start; if it goes in, it's a different
game. But it didn't.
"It's a difficult one for us. There were chances and moments there.
Their main threats came from long shots and they scored one. It
changes the whole game.
"I don't know if it was conditions, it was blustery and windy. We
can't use that as an excuse. We had enough time to recover and it's
a season where we are constantly challenged.
"Villa have a similar schedule to us but just executed the final
bits a bit better. I felt we could get back in the game but the
second goal is a killer blow for us."
On the variable quality of his side's crosses:
"A lot of our build-up play to around their box was very good .
The final ball was really the missing ingredient today.
"It’s really unlike us to cross behind the goal, cross into
the opposition goalkeeper’s hands with the regularity that we did
today. We’ve got some outstanding deliverers of a ball. Then when we
did get the crosses right, we didn’t fill the box with the right
numbers.
"So it was frustrating in that respect, not through a lack of
effort from the players. But normally I think we’re such a good team
with our wide play, but it was off today.”
On
Joelinton:
"It looks like a groin problem: a big blow for us
to lose him at any stage. We hope it’s not too serious. With him and
Bruno missing, that’s a double blow for us.
"But I thought JJ, Jacob Ramsey, came on and did really well
today. I was really pleased with his contribution.”
On Bruno Guimaraes:
"You lose a lot when a player like that isn't available, but
we can't rely on one player. We do have to find a way of winning
without him.
"We missed Bruno's forward thinking. He always wants to pass forward
and is always looking for a creative pass. You could see we missed that
today.
"He always wants the ball and he's always demanding the ball from his
team-mates. They're massive qualities, and then there's his never-say-die
spirit and attitude, too.
"I still don’t think it’s a serious (ankle) injury. He wasn’t quite
there today. I know he’ll do everything he can to be fit for Wednesday.
Let’s wait and see.
"He’s desperate to play as soon as possible, but he obviously
has to be right.”
On whether he needs to recruit a number 10:
"I think when you lose a game like we did today,
there’s a valid argument for everything. Everyone wants to change
something. We have the players that we have, and we have to find a
solution with those players.
"There’s no point me thinking we need another type of player
at this moment because it’s not going to happen. The next chance
we’ll really have to change the squad will be the summer. It’s about
getting the best out of the players we have.
"I don’t think we played badly, but certainly around the goal,
we could have done better, of course. We still created chances that,
on another day, I think we score, but it wasn’t to be."
Unai Emery
said:
"The players were extraordinary.
"We spoke about this match and the difficulties some
teams have with their level here. It is the highest level we can face this
season and the players respond fantastic.
"We can only help the players tactically. Out on the
field, they need to show the attitude and commitment to work to the game
plan and they did it.
"Last week we lost and were so disappointed but we can
be calm again and have confidence. We were comfortable in what we were
doing.
"We are trying to build our structure - individually, collectively and
mentally. When someone is not available, we must then feel comfortable and
confident with the players that we have.
On his side's title chances:
"Next week we play against Brentford. Last week we lost. Nobody asked me
about being contenders for the title after Everton. OK, calm. Keep balance.
I only know to work every day. I am being realistic. We are competing for
the position we are in.
"We didn’t speak about it next week. We had a very
difficult week. We reacted on Thursday and got up. Today we won and we got
up to feel again confidence in everything we are doing. The next match is in
Europe, and then Brentford. They are fantastic.
“In the day 35, more or less, where we are going to be
in that moment, we can maybe speak in that moment. Now, we want to compete
in each competition.
"We have some experiences.
Last year and two years ago, we are competing against Arsenal, Man City,
Chelsea, Man City, Tottenham... we are competing and we are there.
"Last year they asked the same about Forest, and they
finished sixth. When we lost the first matches (this season), nobody
was asking me! 'Maybe you are going to get relegated!' I am always very
positive and I work hard with the players every day."

Newcastle's
four game unbeaten Premier League run came to an end at a miserable
St. James’ Park on Sunday, Aston Villa leaving Tyneside with maximum points
for the first time since 2005.
A goal in each half saw the visitors revive their title challenge,
taking two of the chances that fell their way in contrast to a Magpies side
who huffed and puffed to little good effect throughout.
Despite selection issues of their own - notably the absence of Boubacar
Kamara and John McGinn - Unai Emery's side seemed unaffected by Thursday's
Europa League tie in Turkey and posted a controlled defensive display
between their two goals.
It could have been very different had Sandro Tonali found the net
in the first 30 seconds; making space in the box with some
nifty footwork to elude a trio of opponents, but seeing his shot
smothered by Emiliano Martinez and the rebound ushered to safety.
Newcastle lined up without talisman Bruno Guimaraes, not risked after limping out of Wednesday's 3-0 win over PSV.
Lewis Miley deputised in midfield and Tonali was entrusted with the role of
playmaker.
A bright start should have seen United take the lead but once
again, promising approach play failed to create chances for Yoane Wissa,
preferred again to Nick Woltemade.
Villa went ahead in the 19th minute, Emiliano Buendia advancing
to the
right side of the box and steadying himself before firing past Nick
Pope into the far corner of the Leazes End net.
United's best chance of a half when crosses and set pieces were
routinely below-par came just before the
interval when Miley's header from Gordon's left wing cross looked destined for the top corner
until Martinez tipped it wide.
Wissa also managed to get his head to a cross from the left in first
half added time but it lacked power and Martinez was able to save
comfortably.
The second half was only a few minutes old when Joelinton signalled
that he had injured his groin and was replaced by ex-Villan Jacob
Ramsey who was greeted favourably by the away fans. Having seen
yellow during a first half when he was in typically combative form, the
Brazilian's replacement may have been advisable anyway in terms of keeping
11 players on the pitch.
The hosts pressed for an equaliser and ten minutes after the break
Kieran Trippier's cross from the right looked set to find Harvey Barnes,
only for the winger to try and get a boot on it rather than a header and
fail to make contact with anything. Coming in at the back post, Anthony
Gordon did connect, but blasted over from six yards out.
A double substitution saw Woltemade and Anthony Elanga replace Wissa
and Gordon but chances were still at a premium despite extended
periods
of pressure from the black and whites. Crucially though, Martinez
remained untested save for routine collections of mis-hit centres.
A performance that Emery called extraordinary was aided by United's
shortcomings and the home side were put out their misery in the 88th minute when
Ollie Watkins headed in at the far post - finally adding a Gallowgate goal
to the five he's grabbed against United in previous meetings at Villa Park.
Despite there being well over ten minutes remaining, that was the
signal for significant numbers of home fans
to disgracefully stream out; seemingly forgetting Newcastle's two-goal fight back
against Leeds United here earlier this month.
There was to be no late comeback this time though, United's third home league defeat of the season leaving
them ninth in
the table, on a day when victory could have taken
up to fourth. That position and points tally mirrors Eddie Howe's
side two years ago after the same number of games - and it's fair to say
that our current situation mirrors 2024, even down to the barren mid-season
window.
