18 mins
Sven Botman's backheel on
the halfway line took the ball away from Tijjani Reijnders and infield to
Sandro Tonali, who threaded a precise pass down the left hand channel to
Harvey Barnes.
He advanced into the box before opening up his body to curl a right
footed shot beyond James into the far side of the Leazes End goal: a first
goal in 13 games and a third against City this season.
1-0

39 mins
With both Anthony Elanga
and Kieran Trippier backing off, Jeremy Doku advanced to the byline on the
left side of the Gallowgate End before spearing a low ball across the six
yard box.
That eluded both Lewis Hall and Matheus Nunes but reached the unattended Savinho,
the ball simply bouncing off his straight left leg and into the net from
four yards, Aaron Ramsdale clearing it from well over the line.
1-1
Half time: United 1 City 1
47 mins
A broadly similar second
strike saw Nunes pull the back from the right byline, Marmoush this time the
recipient and taking a touch before blasting his shot home from four yards.
1-2
65 mins
That man Marmoush again;
taking a short pass from Nunes towards the City right before smashing the
ball beyond Ramsdale's right hand from the edge of the box.
1-3
Full time: United 1 City 3
Eddie Howe said:
"Good start from us, really good for half an hour. There's
probably two things that happened. We couldn't sustain our start in
terms of energy but they also played really well. We just have to
accept that.
"I felt we maybe ran out of gas, certainly in the second half
but also towards the end of the first half. You have to say they
were a very good side. We needed the ball to try and generate
pressure but we couldn't get enough of it.
"That was a tough learning lesson for us in that second half,
we just didn't have the strength to make a dent in them.
"The way they play and how good they are technically, they
took a stranglehold of the ball. When we got it back, we gave it
away too easily, maybe looking too vertical and not horizontal
enough at times.
"As soon as you make a technical mistake, you're not seeing
the ball for long periods and then your energy just drains away.
That's why they have been the best team for so long.
On Joelinton:
"Joelinton we did not want to start as he was to big an injury
risk, so we were running out of options in there. We had to protect
Joelinton today with past experience."
On Anthony Gordon:
"Anthony Gordon's come in with an ankle problem, we had to protect
him today."
On Jacob Murphy:
"I couldn't use Jacob Murphy today because of a neck problem which
he suffered yesterday and wanted to see how I felt in the warm-up to
see if I could use him."
On his side's next game:
"In terms of trying to achieve something totally memorable,
yes. All energy and focus now go to Tuesday. My focus is really short-term, and it's trying to win the
game that is in front of me, and that is winning the game against
Barcelona in the Champions League.
"It’s easy to be negative at the moment. I understand we’ve gone out
of the FA Cup but we have the biggest game in the club’s history coming up
and we’ve got to approach it that way.
"We’ve never been in this position in the Champions League before* and it’s
the best competition there is. We have got to get the players ready for that
and we’ve no time to dwell on this.
"We need to try and find some energy from somewhere that will elevate our
performance to a level we’ve not seen this season. That’s the only way we’ll
get through.
"The supporters were incredible. That second half, when it was
very difficult for us, they were still behind us and cheering for
us. That typifies the crowd here. I was saying that I was walking
around.
"This is an amazing football club and full of incredible
people. We are going to need every single person who enters the
stadium on Tuesday to try to make the difference for us.
"That is really now our season - it's in the hands of the next
two games in the Champions League.
"We need to try and find some energy from somewhere that will
elevate our performance to a level that we've not seen before this
season because I think that's the only way we get through."
* we have - also reaching the last 16 in 2002/03 under Sir Bobby
Robson (it was a second group stage that season rather than a
knockout as in 2025/26).
Pep Guardiola
said:
"The only regret I have today is that we missed too
many easy chances. That is the only thing we have to really improve because it's
one against one with the keeper, we have to try to finish better.
"Except the first 15-20 minutes that always happens, we
talk about that, we could not control but after we dropped and Savinho
started to make one against one on the byline we were incredible.
"Savinho in the one against one is unstoppable - he will be a top-class
player...to beat Newcastle you have to perform really well.
It's the best game we have played against Newcastle here
(at SJP) in our period together in 10 years -and a difficult one in the
FA Cup.
"I'm really pleased with how we played, how we behaved
offensively, defensively, the concentration. It's top. Eight times in a row
in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup means how good this organisation is."
On the home side's status:
"Newcastle? For many years, with the new owners and
especially with Eddie Howe, of course they are team to be there. They are a
Champions League team. Look where they are.
This season, they have had a lot of injuries and have
played every three days or four days. Maybe in 10 years they can be like
City right now, always being there.
"I remember when Man City was taken over, and our
owners could not qualify out of the group stages of the Champions League.
Little processes at a time, as much as they are reliable, the problem is in
modern football, when you play in all competitions you have to have players
fit.
"When you don't have that nobody can survive it is
impossible. The Premier League is tougher than ever, the Carabao Cup, FA Cup
and Champions League means more games, every game is tougher.
"When you have that you can only pray and survive. Of
course we have the organisation to do it."
On the events that led to his booking (and a two game
touchline ban for six yellows):
"When Jeremy Doku dribbles (Kieran) Trippier and goes alone to the
box and is being pulled from behind, I'm not asking for a yellow card but
please, it's a foul.
"I will defend my team. I will tell you something - we
have all the records in this country, all of them, despite everything. We
have the record of the manager with the most yellow cards. I want all
records and now I have it. Two game ban now and I will go on holidays the
next two games.
"Oh my god. Oh my god. There are things after 10 years
I cannot understand. Review the action. Of course I’m going to defend
(Jeremy) Doku and all my teams. They continue to do it."

Having ended Newcastle's interest in the Carabao Cup last month, a
"weakened" Manchester
City side similarly removed the Magpies from the FA Cup at a deflated Gallowgate
on Saturday night.
Retaining only Matheus Nunes from the starting line-up held 2-2 by
Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Wednesday, Pep Guardiola's
side ran out convincing winners after coming from behind. And
despite the absence of Erling Haaland, the margin of victory could
have been far greater.
The hosts made four changes from the side that had beaten Manchester
United in midweek despite being a man short for the second half.
William Osula was rewarded for his fine winner with a rare start,
Joe Willock replaced the suspended Jacob Ramsey, Sven Botman was
favoured over Dan Burn and Nick Woltemade was restored to a midfield
berth after returning from illness.
A lively opening from the hosts included Woltemade heading the ball
over James Trafford after the visiting goalkeeper's rick, only for
Nico Gonzalez to clear the danger from inside his six yard box.
The Magpies then took an 18th
minute lead when Harvey Barnes latched on to Sandro Tonali's
incisive pass and stylishly found the back of the Leazes End net.
Just as they had pressed to positive effect though, Newcastle began
to cede territory and drop deeper as City came more into the tie -
Savinho and Nunes a constant threat on the right.
Last season's beaten finalists duly levelled six minutes before the break when Jeremy Doku's low ball
from the left bounced in off Savinho and twice came close
immediately after that as panic spread.
It felt vital to their ambitions that United reached half time level but
that was swiftly rendered redundant as City swarmed across the field
from the restart and were ahead within two minutes.
Their first extended passing sequence was disrupted, but a more
elongated spell of possession ended with Omar Marmoush finishing a Nunes pullback from the
right.
With hopes of a Wembley return ebbing away from him, Eddie Howe attempted to rejig his
ailing side. Off came Trippier, Elanga and Osula as Hall went to
right back and Burn resumed at left back. Wissa and Joelinton were
introduced and Barnes swapped to the right flank.
As they waited to come on, there was a feeling that the Mapies were
hanging on by their fingertips, but almost immediately after that treble change, Egyptian Marmoush
struck from distance to end the tie as a contest and make it seven
goals against us in five games. The arrival of Gordon soon after
seemed as much about getting Woltemade off.
There were no more goals, but with Newcastle barely able to get out
of their own half, City could have scored more had they desired.
After recent games where talking points and injustices both real and
imagined have abounded, there was nothing controversial here tonight
- we were simply outplayed.
Eddie v
Pep this season now reads: played five, lost four, won one.
That's a fair reflection to us.
An FA Cup exit
leaves United idle at Easter with a break from club games stretching almost three weeks - slightly longer if we're
unable to get past Barcelona. That antidote to our fixture
congestion seems a long way away though, with four more blockbusters within a
fortnight before the ceasefire.
Tino Livramento's return after a 15 game absence was a bonus, but
the collective ineffectiveness of messrs Elanga, Willock, Woltemade,
Osula and Wissa was most concerning.
What Howe can do to alleviate that against Barcelona remains to be
seen: Jacob Ramsey is available again and Anthony Gordon presumably
resumes at centre forward, injury permitting.
After the glee of Wednesday, reality returned on Saturday against the blue half of Manchester.
We'll be here to do it all again on Tuesday,
amid concerns that we could be similarly exposed.
