Goals

9 mins Noni Madueke's right wing corner reached Kai Havertz in the Newcastle area and he pushed the ball to Eberchi Eze outside the right hand corner of the box. Without any further ado, the England international dispatched an unstoppable curler beyond Nick Pope at the south end of the ground.

The seventeenth goal that the Gunners have bagged in the PL this season following a corner kick was also the 100th in the Premier League goal that have scored against Newcastle. Like the 98th and 99th, it came from a corner. 0-1

Half time: Arsenal 1 Newcastle 0

Full time: Arsenal 1 Newcastle 0

We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"It was our best defensive performance for a long time. We looked solid, we looked good.

"There were some good bits with the ball as well in both halves. We didn't create enough and when we did, we didn't take them and they took theirs from distance from a corner.

"It's another frustrating defeat for us but a better performance.

"We had defensive resilience, a lot of blocked shots, we didn't have the look of a team that were going to concede whereas in recent weeks, we have.

"There were some good individual performances, the team structure was good so it was better in that aspect. Off the ball, our best performance in a while.

"But we've got to try and put it together. Losing games isn't good enough. We're in that moment where we're losing games even when we look stronger. We've got to be resilient and find a way.

"This was much better from us as a group. There were positive signs that we’ve rediscovered our best defensive mentality. With Bruno (Guimaraes) back we were more controlled and brave on the ball. The chances were there for us, but we can’t lose sight of the fact we’ve lost too many games.

"I can’t be too critical, though. I’ve been critical at times in recent weeks. We have to take the positives from the performance & know that will ultimately change results.

"Yoane (Wissa) and Nick (Woltemade) both performed well when they came on. Nick's creativity for Yoane's chance, that's what he can do. He's a very special talent in that respect.

"If Nick plays like he did today, he’ll get loads more minutes & opportunities to impress. I was very pleased with him.

"We're in that moment where we're losing games even when we look stronger. We've got to be resilient and find a way.

"Today is a big step forward. We need to make sure that's not just attributed to the fact it's Arsenal away from home and the players are hyper-alert to make sure we perform.

"We have to make sure we have that for every game but we have to take the positives and the performance and know that will ultimately change results."

On Arsenal's goal:

"We feel there is something we could have done. We got our structure slightly wrong, in saying that, it's an unbelievable finish.

"Short corners isn't necessarily something we were expecting but it's something we prepare for."

On preferring Dan Burn to Lewis Hall:

"It's always a difficult decision because Lewis is an outstanding player and you never for any second doubt his qualities and what he can bring to the team.

"But I felt today for a number of reasons that Dan was the right pick in terms of height and physicality and dealing with Arsenal's threats.

"Dan's never let us down in that position. He plays it very differently to Lewis. But I thought that was the right call for this game."

O
n how close Newcastle are to turning a corner:

"Closer than we have been because today is a big step forward.

"We need to make sure that's not just attributed to the fact it's Arsenal away from home and the players are hyper-alert to make sure we perform. We have to make sure we have that for every game.

"But we have to take the positives and the performance and know that will ultimately change results."

On meeting with the club's hierarchy next week:

"These are things we always have every year. This one will be slightly harder for me, I'm sure, but it'll be good to meet with the owners and discuss the future."

They Said

Mikel Arteta said:

"I'm really happy for the win. We talked about game one and how important that was.

"We should have finished probably with a bigger margin in certain moments of the game, but when it's 1-0, it's always tough because they have quality. They brought so many good players from the bench as well.

"And when we don't finish the action, especially the open ones that we had, the margins are going to be smaller.

"I don't expect after 22 years of not winning
(the title) that it's going to be a path of roses and beautiful music around it. It's going to be like this and we are ready for it.

"
It's so hard to win in this league, we know that. That's why the amount of points in the team that we have now compared to other years is different. And the reason is that it's so competitive, so difficult to do it.

"We know at half-time the message was clear - we need to go and score the second goal. We tried but when you are not that efficient in certain areas, we have to have other things to win the game.

"We had to do what was in our hands and we discussed that game one is in our hands with what we do and how we approach the game. Are we able to win it? We've done it. We wanted bigger margins (of victory). It's not been possible but we certainly did the job. We were much better, especially as we had some open situations to score the second goal, very clear.

"I have to say as well, in my opinion, it's a clear red card. I watched it 10 times. If you have ever played football, it is a red card. It's the second time in two games because against Manchester City when Kai Havertz goes through and Khusanov fouls him at 1-1, the title is there. It is a red card, guys. So these are the margins as well and hopefully that's going to change.

"They
(referees) will have their opinion. I'm here to give my opinion. I'm someone who has been in the game for a long time, and you talk to any of the players because the trajectory, where the ball is, there's no keeper there. If that were to happen the other way around, it's a red card.

"I’m saying it’s been the reality of the last two games in crucial moments when everything is at stake. We need everything to go our way and it hasn't. I'm not making any excuses; I'm the first one to understand. I didn't talk about it when we lost the game. I'm doing it when we won.

"It's a red card today, it’s a red card in Manchester and the world is different. That's it.

On corner kicks:

"We played them short, and you can see the reaction in the crowd. The second one, we did it again. Ebs shoots with the left foot and puts it out. The third one, we're up and we score.

"To have this, I was going to say another word, courage, big courage. In this moment, when the pressure is on, when the reaction is ready to play, that's exactly what I want for the team. The players have to make the decisions and believe it's the best."

Stats

Newcastle suffered their fifth successive defeat in all competitions, something not endured since January 2021. In Premier League fixtures alone, they last lost four in a row during January 2024.

William Osula
and Malick Thiaw both completed a half century of appearances in all competitions for the Magpies.

United had scored at least once in their last 18 league and cup fixtures before today, ending their longest run under Howe.

This was the 199th meeting of the two sides in league and cup, an amount that matches the 199 times Newcastle have faced Manchester City, making them our joint most frequent opponents.

Eberechi Eze's early strike was enough to decide the contest at a nervy Emirates on Saturday as Eddie Howe's side suffered their fifth successive defeat in all competitions.

Beaten in 12 of their last 13 Premier League visits to this part of North London, Newcastle at least gave a better account of themselves than was feared, although the title hopefuls were anything but impressive after going ahead.

The Magpies will rue missed opportunities to leave with at least a point; Will Osula, Yoane Wissa and Dan Burn all unable to find the target from excellent chances.

Once again however, poor deliveries and decision-making from those in the starting line-up let them down, similar mistakes undermining the effectiveness of the substitutes introduced after a solid defensive performance had kept the hosts largely at bay and the visitors in the game.

An early short corner routine ultimately undid a revamped back line, Burn and Lewis Miley fielded at full-back while Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw continued in the middle.

Two previous flag kicks from the Arsenal right had come to nothing but it was third time lucky for them in the ninth minutes when Eze - left unattended on the edge of the box - beat the recalled Nick Pope with a perfect curling shot.

Pope went on to feature in the game's other talking point,  coming out of his area to completely missing his clearance and foul substitute Viktor Gyokeres in the 75th minute.

To the astonishment arm-waving home boss Mikel Arteta, the onfield award of a yellow card by referee Sam Barrott was ratified by Jarred Gillett on VAR duty: Thiaw deemed likely to recover and clear the ball - meaning the incident wasn't a DOGSO (denial of goalscoring opportunity).

Having netted in his last two starts, Osula kept his place up front and wasted a great opportunity to make it three within the opening 30 seconds - taking Joe Willock's pass but kicking fresh air rather than testing David Raya in the box.

With little sign that Arsenal would add to their single goal advantage and home fans becoming increasingly restless, thoughts of an unlikely equaliser began to emerge among away followers and the noise levels rose accordingly.

Nick Woltemade and Wissa both arrived from the bench and combined well in the 80th minute, only for Wissa to volley over the bar from just outside the six yard box after the German chipped in a clever pass.

Burn then headed straight at Raya as United searched for late equaliser but the hosts eventually made it to the final whistle intact, substitute Bukayo Saka causing some late problems on his return to the side after injury.

Bruno Guimarares was able to start his first game for over 10 weeks and played for 76 minutes before being substituted, his presence instantly making the side more cohesive.

A fourth successive PL defeat saw Newcastle remain in 14th position, eight points clear of the third and final undecided relegation spot with four matches remaining.

Weekend wins for Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Spurs made the lower reaches of the table more congested, with our top-flight status still not mathematically confirmed.

That unlikely disaster may not befall us, but it does look increasingly likely that the Magpies will end this season in their lowest league position for a decade, since finishing 18th in 2015/16.

Arsenal returned to the top of the table by three points, title rivals Manchester City having a game in hand, winning their FA Cup Semi-final across London at Wembley on Saturday.

In what has been a poor league, it's particularly galling that we've become uncompetitive and routinely outfought by mediocre sides giving mundane performances.

That's exemplified by next week's opponents Brighton, eight points ahead in sixth position and dreaming of a possible Champions League place. They will be seeking their third successive win on Tyneside next week - it gets no easier.
