Two first half goals were enough to
see Newcastle U21s exit from the
inaugural Professional Development League play-offs at the first
time of asking on Monday evening.
Playing at the swansea.com Stadium, City went ahead through Thomas
Woodward in the 19th minute, the Welsh youth international
midfielder shooting past Aidan Harris in the Newcastle goal.
Harris then denied Woodward nine minutes later, but was unable to
prevent Blair McKenzie from heading home the rebound to double
Swansea's lead.
Into the second half and United's top scorer Sean Neave shot against
the City goal frame nine minutes after the restart, but Robbie
Stockdale's side were unable to claw back that two goal deficit to
force extra time.
Teams finishing 17th to 24th in PL2 (Category One Academies) plus the top eight
finishers in the PDL (Category Two Academies) contested the
play-offs, although there's no promotion or relegation at stake and
the competition was devised to extend the season for those PL2 sides
failing to qualify for the PL2 playoffs.
Newcastle had finished 21st in PL2, Swansea fourth in the PDL.
