Premier League:
Truly Madley awful:
a tale of indecision
Saturday’s game against Chelsea was another in a long line of
inadequate officiating that has seen VAR and the PGMOL plunging
Premier League football into paralysis.
Andy Madley was the latest of Howard Webb’s whistlers seemingly
incapable of making onfield decisions, unsupported by VAR officials
unable to contradict their partners in crime’s uncertainty.
Madley appeared to be the only person in St. James' Park who
couldn’t see that Trevor Chalobah’s challenge on Anthony Gordon was
a penalty, until his colleague in Stockley Park, Peter Bankes backed
up his indecisiveness. The laughable phrase “side-to-side shielding”
being an apt description of one ref looking after another.
How Bankes was allowed to be the VAR official for Newcastle in the
game following his derby blunders is another mystery that only Webb
can answer.
But whether it was Andy Madley, Bankes, Sam Barrott or Craig Pawson,
it matters not; they have all become rendered completely useless by
a system that encourages vacillation.
Madley bottled every decision on Saturday, whether it be tackles or
handballs in or out of the box, persistent fouling, disgraceful
dissent or the pathetic injury feigning of Cole Palmer. All he did
was fail to blow his whistle and point to his ear.
That wouldn’t be so bad if the VAR official was capable of pointing
out the blindingly obvious, but they have now been directed not to
make a decision that may undermine their pals.
So we have referees that defer to VAR rather than make onfield
judgements and those in a TV studio hundreds of miles away also left
ineffectual by a “clear and obvious" bar made so high that they are
frightened to ask the match referee to review their own
incompetence.
And it’s not just those with the whistle or VAR that can’t make
decisions, linos are also now unable to flag for offside just in
case a goal may follow a passage of play, even when they are 99%
certain a player is offside.
That 1% is enough because VAR may determine that a single frame of
footage could show that body parts may freakishly align to show
players are actually onside. The phrase “matters of fact” is wrongly
used about offsides.
For example, to all eyes in the stadium, Harry Kane was “a mile off”
when he scored at SJP in Steve Bruce’s final game in charge but a
random frame was found to show he wasn’t.
Alexander Isak was clearly
onside in his Newcastle debut at Anfield but a terrible camera angle
and a thick Red line arbitrarily drawn wrongly showed he was
offside.
Well done to the FA and Howard Webb for totally destroying our game.
Your ineptitude knows no bounds....

suggestion)
Premier League:
Mistletoe & whine....
Newcastle 2 Chelsea 2

A mixture of poor finishing and inept officiating meant that
Newcastle had to settle for a point on Saturday lunchtime, despite
holding a 2-0 interval lead over the Blues.
Nick Woltemade took less than four minutes to banish memories of
last weekend's mackem misfortune, burying a loose ball from close
range after an acrobatic effort from Anthony Gordon was blocked by
Robert Sanchez.
And when the same player met Gordon's centre from the left with a
first-time shot that survived elongated VAR checks for offside, a
fifth successive home victory over Chelsea in league and cup games
look to move a stage nearer.
Another two chances to
claim his maiden senior club treble got away from Big Saint Nick
before half time - putting an identical chance to his second from
another Gordon cross wide and then looking set to connect with
Bruno's cross, only for Lewis Miley to rise ahead of him and head
over.
As well as the Magpies had performed in the opening half though -
Lewis Hall outstanding at left back and the whole side
enthusiastically pressing to good effect - their cause was helped by
a cumbersome display from the visitors.
Almost inevitably that changed after the break and after Cole Palmer
won a free kick on the edge of the United area, Reece James found
the bottom corner of Aaron Ramsdale's goal to halve the arrears
within five minutes of the restart.
What looked like a clear 53rd minute penalty when Gordon was barged
off the field by Trevor Chalobah with no attempt to play the ball
was ignored by bungling whistler Andy Madley and quickly
rubber-stamped by VAR to the derision of home fans and outrage of
the United bench.
The only rational explanation is that Madley suspected Gordon to be
diving home for Christmas, but VAR grinch Peter Bankes had ample
opportunity to review the incident and see it for what it was - a
clear foul.
A lightning Chelsea break that began with Sanchez taking possession
after a Newcastle attack petered out then saw Joao Pedro overpower
Malick Thiaw inside his own half, advancing to sweep the ball home
for 2-2.
Revitalised by the introduction of front trio Harvey Barnes, Yoane
Wissa and Anthony Elanga, United then made and missed several
glaring opportunities to retake the lead - along with a pair of more
debatable spot kick shouts.
Barnes volleyed Bruno's cross wide on 85 minutes before Elanga took
the ball from Ramsdale following a corner and sprinted the length of
the field. Needlessly checking back, he then ignored the unmarked
Wissa and Barnes to his right and elected to try and low shot that
went past the post.
Added time brought further controversy; Barnes restrained by James
as he reached the edge of the Chelsea box - but VAR decreeing there
was no denial of a scoring opportunity.
The final whistle sounded soon after, pantomime villain Madley
leaving the field to a chorus of boos and Magpies reserve goalkeeper
John Ruddy leading protests. Eddie Howe then served up his own
mulled whines to the press.
For all the moans about officialdom though, plus some satisfaction
at how they played for most of the game, United were once again
unable to retain a lead - a costly habit that's proving difficult to
shake off.

Team: Ramsdale, L.Miley, Hall, Thiaw, Schar, Guimaraes, Ramsey (Willock

Eddie Howe said:
"(It's) difficult because we played so well today. An
outstanding performance, especially in the first half. Devastated
for the lads that we didn't get the win.
"(The first half) was a reminder of how good we can be.
"Athletically so good, and the press was excellent for us too, and
we were a real threat. It's further evidence that we are improving.
We need more of that."
On
the Anthony Gordon penalty claim:
"In my opinion it’s a clear penalty. I think anywhere else on the
pitch it’s a free-kick. The player has gone into Anthony
(Gordon) too aggressively so I think it’s stonewall.
“It’s not (side-to-side shielding, as the VAR justification
claimed). The defender only looks at Anthony and not the ball and
is too aggressive.”
On Nick Woltemade:
"Nick played really well today, had his best game for us. He set the
tone as the focal point of the attack. He ran tirelessly and took
his chances brilliantly."
On dropping points:
"It's painful for us because we have been in this position before.
All we can do is learn from these experiences and try to improve. If
we had those points back, we would have been in a different
position."
Referee: Andy Madley - first appointment of the season
involving United for the West Yorkshire whistler.
Madley's last Toon game was the 0-4 defeat at Manchester City
back in February. He hadn't officiated at SJP since the
3-3 draw with Liverpool during December 2024.
VAR: Peter Bankes
Stats:
Eddie Howe's side are now unbeaten at Gallowgate in their last
ten league and cup games and have scored in all 15
competitive home fixtures so far this season.
Nick Woltemade
now has nine goals for the Magpies in all competitions, today his
sixth and seventh Premier League strikes. That takes him level with
Carl Cort, Marc Viduka, Stephen Glass and Jonas Gutierrez in the
NUFC PL list.
He's the fourth Newcastle player in score twice in the
opening 20 minutes of a PL home game - only one of that
quartet completed their hat-trick:
Nov 1993 Liverpool (h) Won 3-0. Andy Cole 4,11,30.
Jan 2000 Southampton (h) Won 5-0. Duncan Ferguson 3,4.
Apr 2023 Spurs (h) Won 6-1. Jacob Murphy 2,9.
Dec 2025 Chelsea (h) Drew 2-2. Nick Woltemade 4,20.
This game marked the first time that the Magpies have held a two
goal interval lead at SJP but failed to win since the PL visit of
Wolves in February 2012. 2-0 ahead at HT (Cisse 6
minutes, Gutierrez 18 minutes), the visitors scored on 50 and 66
minutes and the game finished 2-2.
They've since done it in two PL away games: a 2-0 HT lead becoming a
2-2 draw at Bournemouth in February 2018 and a 2-0 HT
lead becoming a 2-3 loss at Manchester United in October
2018.
Newcastle
have now failed to retain half time leads three times in the
Premier League this season: Arsenal (h) (1-0 to 1-2), Brentford (a)
(1-0 to 1-3) Chelsea (h) (2-0 to 2-2). They also did so at
Marseille (a) in the CL (1-0 to 1-2).
No clean sheet for Newcastle in their last 10 league and cup
games, since the 2-0 CL home win over Bilbao in November. Of the
16 goals conceded in that sequence, 14 came after half time.
The Magpies haven't kept a clean sheet in 10 PL games since
the 2-0 home win over Nottingham Forest in October. At that point
they had recorded five PL shutouts from their first seven games.

United's winless start to this season's Premier League International Cup
lengthened to three games following Saturday's loss to
Croatian opposition at Whitley Park.
Zagreb arrived on Tyneside with maximum points from their
opening two games and almost immediately went ahead when
Kaloyan Bozhkov fired past James Taylor.
Sven Sunta doubled that lead five minutes after half time
before Patrik Horvat completed the scoring on 70 minutes.
Newcastle came close to scoring in the closing stages, but
Matheos Ferreira's lob was cleared from inside the six yard
box and a Charlie McArthur effort was ruled out for offside
- meaning that it's 495 minutes since the U21s last netted.
With one point from three games, United cannot advance to
the knockout stages, concluding
Group C against Benfica at Whitley Park on Tuesday January 13th 2026 (7pm) - which
also now clashes with a first team fixture.

Coach Adam Lawrence:
"If you look at the way we started the game and then conceding so
early in the second half, it’s takes the momentum away and
gives the lads a mountain to climb.
"In a period when we aren’t scoring loads of goals, we have
kept some clean sheets but today was a step back in terms of
when we conceded and against good teams you make it too hard
for yourself.
"They are harsh, harsh lessons from today.
"The disappointing thing was that it’s the more senior players
in the team and the backbone of the team.
"The goalkeeper and the two centre-halves, yes it’s a team game and
there are other things happening, they’ve played a big part in
conceding those goals. It’s a funny one where it’s senior players
but we have to learn, there’s no other way to put it."

Citizens test
Newcastle's reward for reaching the Carabao Cup
semi-finals again is a two-legged meeting with
Manchester City.
United will be at home first on Tuesday 13.01.2026 (8pm),
with the second leg at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday
04.02.2026 (8pm if Arsenal are in the other semi-final or
8.15pm if it's Palace).
That second leg comes less than three weeks before the
sides meet in the Premier League at the Etihad, United
having beaten City 2-1 at Gallowgate in November.
This is the sixth time that City and United have been
paired in the League Cup and the first occasion since
September 2023, when the Magpies won 1-0 on Tyneside.
Newcastle's 2-0 away success in October 2014 meanwhile
remains our only league or cup victory at that venue:

Portsmouth in the
FA Youth Cup
Third Round on Tuesday evening, with winger Matheos Ferreira
grabbing a
hat-trick.
Two goals from Michael Mills in the opening nine minutes
put the young Magpies firmly in control at Whitley Park.
His first came just 30 seconds after the opening whistle, firing into the top corner and
he got his second eight minutes later with a low shot inside the
post.
Pompey got one back in the 19th minute through Tayo Singerr
after Ferreira was dispossessed in his own half.
Ferreira made amends in the 41st minute though with a fine finish,
lifting the ball over 'keeper Oscar Glover after being put through by Rory Finneran.
He got his second five minutes into the second period when Mills
slotted the ball through and Ferreira finished well inside
the far post.
Ferreira then completed his hat-trick sliding in to finish Seldon's
pass with 17 minutes left.
Brandon Downey hit Pompey's second of the game in the closing
stages.
17 year-old Ferreira becomes the first Magpie to claim a hat-trick
in this competition since Dylan Stephenson did so against Leeds

Newcastle now enjoy home advantage in the Fourth Round, hosting
Crystal Palace. The FA website lists that as a 7pm kick-off at
Whitley Park on Thursday
22.01.2026.
Speaking after the win, coach Chris Moore said:
“The thing with Matheos (Ferreira) is he has
loads of ability and loads of cutting edge - but he did his bit for
the team as well. He did a really good job for the team, he worked
really hard and he did all of that side of it. Then that’s a good
platform for him to show his attacking bits.
"He scored different goals tonight, he ran in behind, he carried the
ball really well and then the last goal, he’s got in at the back
post, you have to gamble, put that work in, get up the pitch and get
in the middle when you might not get it and he’s done that and got
his rewards.
"It’s really good for the lads, it’s good experiences and good
for their development. The big thing about going through is you get
more of them and they get a little bit bigger each time.
"That was a tricky tie tonight, we’ve got through with that one and
then we have a tough one against Crystal Palace, who are doing well
in their league, so that should be a good occasion as well.”

from the competition back in 1933 and belatedly returned in 1983.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.
Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are
gone.
2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets are
€50 or less.

On This Day in History |

22nd December |

Born Or Died:
1947 David Lawson born, Wallsend.
(1966-67)

Goalkeeper spotted playing for Wallsend Boys Club who made his competitive
reserve bow in a 2-1 Central League win over
Manchester United at Gallowgate in October 1966.
Failing to make the grade
at Newcastle, David had a trial at Shrewsbury Town before signing for
Bradford Park Avenue and making his Football League debut
during the 1967/68 season.
Moving on Huddersfield Town in 1970, David faced the Magpies in a 1-1 Division
One draw at Leeds Road the following February.
Making an £80,000 move to Everton in 1972, he played 152 times for the
Toffees before a free transfer to Luton Town in October 1978.
That failed to work out though and within five months he'd joined Stockport County, completing a century of appearances before being released
in 1981.
Playing on for non-league Marine, David gained his coaching badges and took
charge of a women's team on Merseyside.
Returning to the North East, he became a sub-postmaster at Dawdon on the
Durham Coast - winning a bravery award after thwarting a robbery there in 1989.
1973 Alan Thompson born, Newcastle.
(1989-93)
A midfielder whose career was endangered by a September 1990
car crash involving him and three of his youth team colleagues.
Broken bones in his neck and back saw a specialist advise Tommo to prepare for
the worst, but he fought back to full fitness and was handed his first team
debut by Ossie Ardiles at Swindon Town in November 1991.
An off-field argument with then-Manager Kevin Keegan reputedly sealed his SJP
fate, with Alan signing for Bolton Wanderers in a £250K deal ahead of the
1992/93 season.
Capped at England U21 level while with the Trotters, Tommo scored a memorable
goal at Wembley Stadium in the 1995 League Cup Final - although Liverpool
won 2-1.
Moving on to Aston Villa in 1998, a dispute with manager John Gregory saw Alan
omitted from the 2000 FA Cup Final squad and he was transferred to Celtic
that September.
Silverware would come his way while at Parkhead - along with a single senior
England cap - before the replacement of Martin O'Neill by Gordon Strachan
saw Alan begin to fade from the first team picture.
Loaned to Leeds United in January 2007, Tommo hung up his boots in May of the
following year, having played his final games for Hartlepool - his very last
outing coming against Swindon Town in March 2008.
Returning to SJP as an Academy coach that summer, he later became reserve coach
before returning to Celtic as assistant to Neil Lennon in June 2010.
However, after two seasons working with Lennon, his former teammate
sacked him, reportedly over the phone, after concerns over
Thompson's "lifestyle", which saw him admit to a drink-driving charge in
February 2011.
Joining Birmingham City in June 2014 as a Development Coach, the
departure of manager Lee Clark from St. Andrews just four months later saw
Thompson follow him out of the door soon after.
The pair were reunited within weeks though, Clark taking over as Blackpool boss
and bringing Thompson to Bloomfield Road as his first team coach.
That lasted until the end of the 2014/15 season, when Clark exited the
Tangerines following demotion to League One and Thompson also departed.
There was no reunion with Clark when he took over at Kilmarnock in
February 2016, but Alan was by his side a year later when Lee returned to
England as Bury boss.
Clark and Thompson both departed from Gigg Lane in October 2017 however.
Maintaining a link to the current Magpies squad, Alan is related to Sean Longstaff.

1997
Kyle Scott born, Bath.
(2019-21)

Signed on a free transfer during July
2019 following his release by Chelsea, central midfielder Kyle debuted the
following month in a 0-6 U23 loss at Reading.
With Southampton from an early age, he joined Chelsea's Academy aged 10 and was
part of their 2015 FA Cup Youth Cup winning squad, featuring in a 3-0
victory at Gallowgate over the Magpies.
An unused substitute in the 2017 Charity Shield, Kyle's sole competitive senior
outing for Chelsea came in an FA Cup tie against Hull City during February
2018.
Loaned to Dutch second tier side Telstar for part of the 2018/19 campaign,
Scott has represented England, Ireland and the USA in youth international
matches.
He was released by United in June 2021 and joined MLS side FC Cincinnati,
debuting against Orlando City four months later.
However that would be a brief association and by February 2022 Kyle was
a free agent once again, signing for US League Orange County later that
year.

United repeated their result
of their most recent Turf Moor four years earlier, but
achieved in different circumstances.
Clinging to their one goal lead as Burnley sought an
equaliser, home captain Alick Robinson limped off with a
knee injury eight minutes from full time - and the Magpies
took full advantage.

1945 Newcastle's War League game at Bradford
Park Avenue was postponed after a locomotive failure left the train conveying
them to Leeds stuck at Northallerton.
Around 100 Toon fans did reach Park Avenue's ground after catching an earlier
train - joined by Magpies Captain Joe Harvey, who made the short trip from his
family home expecting to play while on Army leave.

1945 At Gallowgate meanwhile, the reserves
shared four goals in a Central League fixture with Manchester
City.
Magpies centre half Ronnie Sales hit both goals for the hosts.

The national power crisis saw that this game kicked
off a 2pm and the programme was a slim volume owing to
production difficulties caused by the three day week.
0-2 down at the break, Terry McDermott then halved the
deficit with a shot that took a massive deflection off Ian
Gillard.
And when Bobby Moncur shot through a crowd of players
after a Terry Hibbitt free kick United thought they'd
nicked a point.
However there was just time for Terry Venables to tee up
Stan Bowles, who beat Iam McFaul with a grass
cutter.
A first ever loss
to the R's made it just one league win in six attempts for United.

while his opposite number in the home line-up was old

who shall remain nameless (initials CH) surpassed even his
low standards by confusing sports, naming Devon
Malcolm as the Rovers danger man.
Coming in from the Football Stand end presumably....

After drawing 1-1 at White Hart Lane, the sides met
again in this Third Round tie that was played before
Christmas due to the earlier end to the domestic season
ahead of Euro 2000.
This was a miserable return for David
Ginola, despite a
fluky
goal for the Frenchman that looped in after deflecting off
Rob Lee's boot.
Jeered by his former fans, Ginola took the huff big-style
at the end of the first half and made a solitary exit from the field to a backdrop of pantomime style catcalls.

Four days after the epic 3-1 victory at Highbury that
put us on top of the league, an even more amazing victory
at a wintry Elland Road kept us there over Xmas.
Future Magpies Lee Bowyer and Mark Viduka netted;
David Batty
appeared for Leeds and Jonathan Woodgate and
Alan Smith
were unused subs for the hosts.
Locked at 3-3 with just seconds left, Nobby Solano supplied a
slide-rule finish from Kieron Dyer's pass, right in front of an
ecstatic away following. Jingle Bells. Again.
PS: bar room historians
rightly point out that this defeat marked the starting
point of the demise of Leeds as a top-flight club. Ha!

2010 Joey Barton dismissed media reports that he
would leave from SJP:
"I was actually laughing about it this morning saying that I
thought £1.5m was a little bit cheap and if I was them, I would ask for more,
and we had a good giggle about it.
"People write what they write, it is
silly season. I have always gone on record about the affinity I have got with
the fans at this football club, and the football club and my fellow players.
"I have been on record as saying I
want to stay here for the rest of my career. Nothing has happened and no-one
has told me otherwise, and as far as I'm concerned, that's what's going to
happen."

Shola Ameobi came off the bench to fire a
late winner and secure three precious Premier League points.
It was a moment of magic that rarely looked like coming, as United dominated but created very few clear openings on a soaking wet Tyneside afternoon.
Heavy rain and surface water lying on the pitch threatened to dampen the day
but the game rightly went ahead and in the end the Magpies were grateful that
it did.

2014 Almost exactly a year to
the day after his last game, Jonas Gutierrez made a successful
comeback as the U21s beat West Ham 4-1 at Whitley Park.
The Argentinean's previous appearance was at the same venue for the
reserves in December 2013, ahead of a year that saw a loan spell at Norwich
City, testicular cancer diagnosis, surgery and a period of recovery.
Jonas
completed 89 minutes before being substituted to a deserved round of applause
from those present, including fellow countryman Fabricio Coloccini.
