Carabao Cup:
We could have won 6-5....

Manchester City  3  Newcastle
  1
(Man City win 5-1 on aggregate)

Newcastle's tenuous grip on the three-handled Carabao Cup was well and truly prised off after just over half an hour at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, as Manchester City went 5-0 up on aggregate.

Three calamitous goals inside the first 32 minutes meant that the holders relinquished the trophy but it's no exaggeration to say that they should have found the net half a dozen times, rather just once as Anthony Elanga ended his personal and this stadium's goal droughts.

Joe Willock, Anthony Gordon, Sven Botman, Yoane Wissa (twice) and also Elanga failed to find the net with gilt-edged chances while Harvey Barnes also had a goal disallowed.

But any dreams of a famous turnaround evaporated inside the first seven minutes when Dan Burn was unlucky to see an excellent last ditch tackle rebound into the net off Omar Marmoush with Aaron Ramsdale stranded.

That put City three ahead on aggregate and it was four in the 29th minute when Marmoush was again fortunate to see Kieran Trippier's goalline clearance fall kindly for him to nod in on the goalline.

Pep Guardiola's side took just three minutes to get their third on the night when again Burn was slightly unfortunate to see his interception fall at the feet of Tijjani Reijnders who side-footed past Ramsdale.

Willock's miss came in the ninth minute when Gordon squared it to him but James Trafford smothered his attempt to find the net and Gordon then allowed Trafford to make another save in the 21st minute.

Gordon left the field a minute before half-time with what appeared to be a hamstring injury to be replaced by Barnes but a few minutes later Trafford saved again, this time tipping away a header from Botman that looked destined for the top corner.

Eddie Howe made more changes at the break with Wissa, Elanga and Jacob Murphy joining the action and inside the first minute Wissa scuffed an awful effort wide when through on goal.

Wissa was denied a penalty by referee Tony Harrington and VAR after robbing the ball in the box and then going down after a tug on his shirt with Reijnders shooting wide before the check.

But Elanga finally gave the away fans something to cheer in the 62nd minute with a fantastic solo effort, cutting in from the right and evading three challenges before curling a left-footed shot past Trafford and in off the post.

That was Elanga's first competitive goal for the club at the 32nd time of asking and it was Newcastle's first goal at the Etihad for 752 painfully barren minutes.

Barnes found the net five minutes later but Wissa had been offside in the build-up and then Elanga side-footed the ball wide when he seemed certain to get a second.

Elanga then pulled the ball across for Wissa who somehow failed to make contact a yard from goal while at the other end Ramsdale made two fine saves from substitute Erling Haaland.

Sandro Tonali fired a shot at the goalkeeper near the end but neither side could find the net again as the hosts had their place in the final against Arsenal confirmed after two minutes of added time.

But it was the goal scored by Rayan Cherki in added time at St. James' Park that decided this tie, with City never likely to have their two goal advantage from the first leg overturned.

Full match report to follow.

Team: Ramsdale, Trippier (Osula 76), Botman, Thiaw, Burn, Hall (J.Murphy 46), Tonali, Ramsey, Willock (Elanga 46), Gordon (Barnes 44), Woltemade (Wissa 46).
Subs n/u: Pope, A.Murphy, Neave, Shahar.

Goal: Elanga 62.

MCFC: Trafford, Ait Nouri, Ake, Foden (Cherki 72), Khusanov, Marmoush, Nico, Nunes, O'Reilly, Reijnders, Semenyo.
Subs n/u: Donnarumma, Dias, McAidoo, Nypan.

Booked: Nunes, Nico, Rodri.

Goals: Marmoush 7,29, Reijnders 32.

Crowd: 41,834 including a travelling contingent of 5,359 fans in the South Stand upper who sang, "We're gonna win 6-5" after Elanga's goal. Black and white humour.

Eddie Howe said after the game:

"
We were craving that first goal and when Manchester City get it you know our task becomes even more difficult.

"If you add up all our opportunities over the two ties, there was a lot of missed opportunities which has really cost us.

"I was really annoyed with the first-half display because I think we pride ourselves on being really organised and tactically we want to be able to hand any problem the opposition gives us but that first half I just don’t think we were good enough individually and our duels were off.

"Really annoyed with the first-half display because we pride ourselves on been really organised and tactically we want to be able to handle any problem the opposition gives us.

"But that first half, I just don't think we were good enough. Our duels were off. That gave us huge problems. We didn’t defend well at all, I think.

"So, yeah, the first half was really disappointing. Where does that leave our season? That leaves our season, we are still fighting on several fronts. I think the games are coming thick and fast, there is no let-up for us.

"It is painful. We obviously loved the ride that we had last year in the cup and all the moments and the experience, and we were desperate to do it again.

"We're finding it difficult in this moment having just played Paris, Liverpool and Manchester City away. That's a tough schedule for any team to face, and we're dealing with the number of injuries that we have. There are no excuses, it's just that's the reality.

"We're missing some really big players, and I think you could feel that from their performance tonight.

"Last year we went to several grounds and went into the games really believing that we could win. The only way you build that is by winning, so we need to try and get that feeling back. The team has been knocked in recent weeks, there's no denying that.

"As I said, we've lost some big players, and with that you lose a little bit of confidence.

"It's funny, the last two games, if you look at it and actually really analyse the games, which I know you guys do, you'd go, we haven't been outplayed throughout the games, we've been in the games.

"We haven't defended well enough and we haven't taken a lot of the chances that we've created.

"So we still believe that we're a good team, we just need to protect confidence levels at all costs, that's my first thought."

On Anthony Gordon:

"
It looks like a hamstring problem. I don’t quite know how bad it is but it was enough for him to come off so that’s a big worry.”

Referee:

Premier League:
Brentford (h)

The Magpies return to Premier League action on Saturday, looking to end a winless three game run in that competition when the Bees arrive on Tyneside.

It's a 5.30pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.

This will be Brentford's twelfth visit to SJP and they are winless in the previous 11. Newcastle have never failed to score against them in a home game.

United are now winless in four games in all competitions, their worst sequence since November and December 2024.

Failure to beat Brentford would make that five games - the longest barren run since February and March 2023.

Team: Anthony Gordon is the latest concern, after leaving the pitch before half time at Manchester City in midweek. He's now reported to have had a hamstring scan.

Fabian Schar, Tino Livramento, Emil Krafth and Joelinton remain out. The availability of Lewis Miley and Bruno Guimaraes is yet to be confirmed.

Assuming he plays, Sven Botman will make his 100th appearance in all competitions for Newcastle.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 17/20
The draw 14/5
BFC win 29/10

New customers receive a £50 bet when staking £10 on the PL (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

BFC: Josh Dasilva, Antoni Milambo and Fabio Carvalho are out due to injury. Kevin Schade will be suspended following his red card against Aston Villa. The midfielder netted the opener in Brentford's 3-1 win over United last November.

Despite playing over half the game with 10 men, Brentford won 1-0 at Villa Park - ending a run of successive losses.

Igor Thiago has scored 17 PL goals so far this season, including a brace against United in the first meeting.

On the road this season, Keith Andrews has seen his side win four games and lose the other eight.

Referee: Andy Madley - a quick return to Gallowgate for the West Yorkshire whistler after he took charge of the 2-2 PL home draw with Chelsea in December 2025.

Departure:
Lascelles
leaves

Tuesday brought confirmation that long-serving central defender Jamaal Lascelles had left Newcastle, joining Championship side Leicester City for the remainder of the season, at which point he'll become a free agent.

The 32 year-old made the last of 253 appearances against Arsenal in September, having moved to Tyneside from Nottingham Forest in August 2014 alongside Karl Darlow, the pair immediately returning to the City Ground on loan.

Inheriting the number 6 shirt from Mike Williamson, Jamaal debuted in the League Cup against Northampton Town in August 2015, before a harsh introduction to the Premier League
coming off the bench to partner Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba in a 1-6 loss at Manchester City,

The replacement of Steve McClaren by Rafa Benitez failed to prevent relegation but was pivotal for Lascelles, who became a regular starter and was made club captain.

One season in the second tier ended in spectacular style with Jamaal holding the Championship trophy following a home win over Barnsley and Brighton's draw at Villa.

Losing his place for the Premier League opener as Benitez partnered Ciaran Clark with Florian Lejeune, Paul Dummett almost immediately limped off and Lascelles was back in.

Winning goals in successive games against Swansea City and Stoke City were followed by news of a contract extension and what became an effective pairing with Fabian Schar.

Retaining the captaincy after Benitez gave way to Steve Bruce, Lascelles remained a regular until the installation of Eddie Howe and later acquisitions of Dan Burn and Sven Botman saw him slip down the pecking order.

An unused substitute at Wembley in the 2023 Carabao Cup Final, Jamaal found his way back into the side again as Botman succumbed to injury and Burn played at full back - starting all but one of United's six Champions League ties and giving one of his standout displays away to PSG.

Suffering a cruciate injury during a 4-3 home victory over West Ham in March 2024, Lascelles was sidelined for over a year before returning to action with a pair of substitute outings in the early weeks of this season, by which time Malick Thiaw was through the door.

His absence from the playing squad though didn't prevent Jamaal from lifting the Carabao Cup with fellow captains Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier last year - a fitting gesture to acknowledge his long service to the cause.

Deadline day:
Old boys, new clubs

Transfer deadline day saw Moussa Sissoko end his second stint at Watford after completing a move to Greek side Panathinnaikos, who are managed by Rafa Benitez.

Allan Saint-Maximin joined French side RC Lens after leaving Mexicans Club America while Southampton's Adam Armstrong made a Premier League return with Wolves.

Elsewhere, the meandering career of Nile Ranger has now taken him to Chatham Town, while Dan Gosling has stepped up from his U18 role with Watford to be joint interim boss of the Hornets.

Update:
Five day Metro closure

A significant part of the Metro network is closed this month, with no services between St James and Shiremoor between Monday 16th and Friday 20th February.

Replacement bus service number 900 will run.

U18s:
No reward for late show

Manchester City U18s  3  Newcastle U18s  1

Saturday saw Newcastle U18s become the latest side to succumb to Manchester City, as the Northern Section Premier League leaders made it 12 wins from 13 games.

Beaten 1-7 on their last visit to City's Football Academy, United got off to the worst possible start on eight minutes when an unforced error by goalkeeper Roman Dowell allowed Dexter Oliver the easiest of finishes.

The visiting custodian then kept his side in the game with two eye-catching stops to prevent Xavier Parker scoring.

That lead was extended four minutes before half-time when Christian Dunbar-McDonald fired in a low shot - just seconds after Matheos Ferreira had run from his own half deep into the City box but failed to find the unmarked Michael Mills.

An improved showing from the young Magpies after the interval saw them create three half-chances from close range in the opening five minutes.

A penalty shout when a defender barged into United's Rory Finneran was ignored by referee Steven Taylor (not that one) and the hosts grabbed a third goal their next attack - Dunbar-McDonald smashing home in the 58th minute.

Undaunted by the increasing deficit, the visitors pushed forward at every opportunity, substitute Kacey Wooster quickly into the action and denied by Ben Vickery.

Newcastle did get on the scoresheet with 15 minutes of normal time remaining, when a long free kick from Mason Miley was headed home by Henry Johnson.

Michael Mills then saw his effort roll just wide of the target before a handball in the box gave United a penalty in the third minute of added time. However, Wooster could only direct it straight at the 'keeper.

Team: Dowell, Johnson, Morgan (Hutchison 84), Durrant, Moran, Finneran, Tikka-Lemba (M.Taylor 63), M.Miley, Ferreira (Wooster 63), Lucas (Pinnington 77), Mills.
Sub n/u: Anderson.

Booked: Ferreira, Lucas.

Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)
Sunday saw Cadiz beaten 0-1 at Huesca in La Liga 2 with the Magpie winger (pictured) completing 85 minutes.

NUFC.com correspondent TT noted that after a quiet first half, "Antonito" came more into his own and played well.

Harshly booked for a legitimate tackle, he subsequently sent over two decent crosses from the left, both of which were directed wide by the Cadiz forward Alvaro Pascual.

It's unclear whether this was the final game of Joe's short loan spell at the Highwaymen.

Tuesday sees the Magpies back on the road, heading to N17 for a Premier League meeting with Thomas Frank's Cockerels.

This will be United's seventh visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the previous six bringing three wins, two losses and a draw. The Magpies have netted in all six.

The two sides have already met twice this season: the corresponding PL game ending 2-2 and Newcastle running out 2-0 winners at SJP in the Carabao Cup.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at £30.
2025/26 CL away tickets are €50 or less.

On This Day in History
5th February

Born Or Died:

1896 Robert Roxburgh born, Morpeth.
(1920-24)

Full back whose first team appearances at SJP were restricted by the consistent form of Frank Hudspeth and Bill McCracken.

Signed from Morpeth Comrades in November 1920 for £50, Roxburgh debuted in a 1-0 home win over Arsenal the following April.

Moving on to Blackburn Rovers for £375 in May 1924, February 1929 saw Bob complete the unusual feat of scoring two OGs in a game, as Rovers lost 2-5 at Everton.

Leaving Ewood in 1931, Bob spent some time coaching in Holland with Heracles before returning to England and becoming Leeds United trainer in 1938.

Moving to the role of Physio at Elland Road during 1957, Roxburgh acted as caretaker manager for the ten final games of the 1958-59 season, a run of games which included a 2-2 draw at Newcastle.

Living in Leeds following his retirement, Bob passed away in November 1974.

1896 Thomas Urwin born, Haswell.
(1924-30)

The only footballer to date with a surname beginning in "U" to have played in the first team for the Magpies (Robert Ullathorne only appeared for our reserves).

Tommy came to United from Shildon via Middlesbrough, having made three England appearances and added one more cap to that tally during his time on Tyneside.

Debuting in a 4-0 home win over Blackburn Rovers in September 1924, this winger's first goal arrived during his third outing - a 2-2 draw with Bury at St.James' Park.

Picking up a Championship medal at SJP in 1927, wearsider Tommy later moved on to play for the mackems, and appeared for an FA XI who toured Canada in 1931.

Finally retiring from playing at the age of 39, he later worked as a hospital clerk on wearside. Urwin died in 1968.

1953 Death of Finlay Speedie, 72.
(1906-08)

1978 David Burt born, Blyth.
(1993-99)

Striker who appeared for United at youth and reserve team level, but failed to make it into the senior side.

Acting as boot boy to both Andy Cole and Lee Clark during his time as an apprentice, David was loaned out to Scunthorpe United in 1996 by Kevin Keegan, following the scrapping of Newcastle's reserve side.

Twice called up to the first team but failing to make the bench, Burt (whose brother Jamie was also on our books) was given a professional deal by Kenny Dalglish and allocated squad number 26.

However, he wasn't retained by Ruud Gullit and after a brief spell on trial at York City dropped into local football, with stints at Blyth Spartans and North Shields.

David later played for Sunday league side Blyth Joiners Arms and worked for local computer firm Grainger Games.

United were in North Wales for a training camp, staying at Marine Hydro in the town of Rhyl.

As part of that, they journeyed to the Isle of Anglesey for what was billed as a "Grand Football Match" on a Wednesday afternoon.

A ceremonial kick-off at the Castle Grounds was made by Sir Richard Henry Williams-Bulkeley, Lord Lieutenant of Anglesey.

With the score in double figures, the award of a penalty kick to the Magpies saw goalkeeper Lawrence step up to take it - only to miss and then have to sprint back to his goal as the hosts attacked.

Accounts of the scorers vary with Higgins noted by one reporter, but Bill Appleyard is widely reported to have netted nine times.

Supermac opened the scoring and looked to have clinched the tie, only for Ronnie Radford to crack home his infamous long-range effort.

Ricky George then won it in the first period of extra time. Unfortunately John Motson was present to commentate on this match for Match of the Day and forged a whole career on the back of his new found-fame.

In 2007, The Observer gathered recollections from players, staff and fans read that here

Goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek joined Newcastle from Banik Ostrava in his native Czech Republic for a fee of £350,000, following a successful trial period in the reserves.

1992 At a press conference staged in the Visitor Centre of S&N's Tyne Brewery, Kevin Keegan was introduced as Newcastle Manager - succeeding the sacked Ossie Ardiles.

Introduced by Sir John Hall, Keegan had agreed to take the job after the Magpies Chairman called him and said, "There's only two people who can save Newcastle United, and we're talking on the telephone."

2009 Shay Given was officially presented to the press as a Manchester City player and spoke about his departure from SJP.

Given could hardly have been more damning about the current regime - quickly commenting that he wasn't impressed with the way Newcastle had dealt with his transfer and expressing his unhappiness with the current direction of his former club.

When asked if Newcastle could have done more to keep him at the club he replied, "Yes, they could have done more but they seemed happy to take the cash."

Andy Carroll bagged a brace, as did substitute Peter Lovenkrands, with a Gabor Gyepes own goal completing the rout.

A late consolation for Aaron Wildig only slightly spoiled an encouraging night, old boy Michael Chopra's return barely noticed.

There have been some crazy days at St. James' Park but this topped the lot; United wiping out a four goal deficit and almost winning a simply staggering game of football.

It appeared we were seeing a repeat of the League Cup disaster earlier in the season when Theo Walcott raced away for the opener after just 41 seconds and Johan Djourou made it 0-2 less than two minutes later.

At that point, the Arsenal fans sang, "you might as well go home" and when Robin van Persie tucked in another and then headed a fourth after just 26 minutes there were one or two who took their advice.

More fool them.

What followed in the second half of this remarkable game will forever stay in the memories of those who witnessed it, as the most unlikely comeback ever followed the senseless sending off of Abou Diaby.

It was hardly enough to convince anyone that a fightback might be on the cards but when Leon Best was fouled by Laurent Koscielny in the box, Joey Barton stroked in the penalty.

With little more than 20 minutes remaining anything more than a consolation still seemed improbable but seven minutes later Best poked in another and suddenly a belief swept the ground that something incredible could happen.

Another soft penalty was awarded when Mike Williamson tumbled over and although Barton hit an unconvincing spot-kick, 'keeper Wojciech Szczesny could only divert it into his net.

The equaliser came in spectacular fashion from Cheick Tiote with a goal of stunning quality. A Barton free-kick was only half-cleared and it dropped to Tiote who smashed in a fabulous volley that screamed into the corner of the net with the whole team racing to catch him and celebrate wildly.

Minutes later Ranger played in Nolan and with the 'keeper beaten, the ball just skimmed wide as a simply unthinkable victory looked possible.

Five minutes of added time saw both teams going for the win and Van Persie almost beat the offside trap while Ranger had a good effort pushed out and Nolan again went close.

Just as the half-time whistle was greeted by a stunned silence, the final whistle saw fans, players and staff in total disbelief and bewilderment at what had just occurred.

They had probably just seen United's greatest ever comeback, eclipsing the 4-3 and 5-4 home victories over Leicester City in 1997 and 1990 and 1974's infamous 4-3 Nottingham Forest pitch-invasion game.

2024 The U21s rounded off their Premier League Cup group stage games with a first victory in six attempts - but fell short of the scoreline that they required to have any chance of qualification.

Facing a Forest side already assured of top spot and a place in the knockout stages
at the North Street home of Alfreton Town, United trailed at the interval but Alex Murphy levelled before United were awarded a penalty kick that Amadou Diallo successfully dispatched.

A composed and confident performance deservedly sent United back to Wembley for the second time in three years, recording a third victory and clean sheet over the Gunners in just four months.

Leading 2-0 after the first leg a lightning counter attack ended with Alexander Isak netting inside the first four minutes.

A lengthy VAR review saw that effort chalked off, but Isak pinged another effort off the goal frame in the 19th minute and Jacob Murphy swept in the rebound.

Further daylight was put between the when Gunners goalkeeper David Raya made an ill-advised attempt at passing to Declan Rice just outside his own area.

Worried out of possession by Schar the ball then fell for Anthony Gordon to roll in and open up four goal advantage.

Home fans serenaded the Gunners boss with, "Mikel Arteta, it must be the ball" - referencing his ludicrous comments after United's first leg success at the Emirates.
