Premier League:
Still in our own hands

Arsenal  1  Newcastle  0

Match action is online here

Newcastle's hopes of finishing second in the Premier League came to an end at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon after Arsenal's Declan Rice fired in the only goal of the game.

In a game of two halves, United failed to find the net despite dominating the first period and
managing five efforts on target in the first quarter; David Raya denying Bruno Guimaraes, Tino Livramento, Dan Burn and Sven Botman.

Eddie Howe's side failed to carry that threat following the interval however and the Gunners grew into the contest, culminating in the 55th minute winner clinically dispatched past Nick Pope by the fit-again Rice.

With Alexander Isak missing from the starting line-up due injury, Callum Wilson made his first league start since the defeat at Liverpool in February but never looked remotely like finding the net, despite his side creating chances.

Guimaraes looked a certain scorer six yards out but went for placement and was denied, Livramento's shot after a fine move was too near Raya and Burn was unlucky that the 'keeper saved his header before Botman was also foiled.

Leandro Trossard shot just wide and Pope blocked a Thomas Partey header as the listless Gunners tried to hit back, Raya again to the rescue when a Harvey Barnes shot was deflected off Partey towards the bottom corner of the goal.

The Magpies ended the half well on top in terms of chances and possession, disappointed not to be in front against a side they'd beaten three times already during the season in all competitions without conceding a single goal.

That changed 10 minutes after the restart though, when Anthony Gordon was dispossessed by Bukayo Saka on the left hand side of the United half.

Martin Odegaard advanced before turning the ball infield to Rice and his firmly-hit first-time drive from the edge of the box swung away from Pope to belatedly bring a slumbering Emirates to life.

Howe responded with changes; Emil Krafth, Lewis Miley and William Osula all introduced and Joe Willock also coming on for the closing stages.

Former Gunner Willock could have scored in the 83rd minute but fired high and wide after doing well to make a chance for himself inside the box near the left hand byline.

A melee in added time following a Newcastle corner saw players from both sides confront each other in the Arsenal box after Burn challenged Raya, opposite number Pope having coming forward for the set piece.

Jakub Kiwior and Burn were booked following a VAR check before referee Simon Hooper blew for full time.

A single goal defeat was the least worst result in terms of limiting the damage to United's goal difference compared to Chelsea, avoiding going further behind of equal or even greater importance than trying to force a leveller.

And although hopes of stealing second place from Mikel Arteta's side ended, the overall task remains unchanged from what it was before the first whistle here today.

Regardless of the outcome of Manchester City's game in hand and other results next Sunday, Eddie Howe's side will
secure a Champions League place by beating Everton.

That would make it seven PL wins in a row at Gallowgate and 13 in 19 home games this season - the best top flight total by any Magpies side in the top flight since 2003.

Referee: Simon Hooper -  a fifth game of the season in charge of the Magpies for the Wiltshire-based referee.

Beginning with defeats at Chelsea and Brentford, Hooper took charge of the 2-0 win at Old Trafford and the 2-0 Carabao Cup second leg success against Arsenal at SJP.

VAR:
Michael Salisbury.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"
We've had to win a number of games to get in this position. It's in our hands. Everything in our preparation needs to be really focused. This game has gone, second has gone, we have to be ready for next week.

"As soon as we get one or two injuries, we're stretched. We've said that every since I've been here. We are light.

" When you lose Kieran Trippier, Joe Willock, Lewis Hall, and then Alex today
(and Joelinton), you see those players missing. Then you lose your firepower from the bench. They are developing, they will be good players. But we've lost a bit of firepower.

"We were really good in the first half, really strong and really imposed ourselves on that match. Their goalkeeper made some great saves, we didn't take one of those huge moments.

" The second half was very different but we defended well. The goal that won the game was an unbelievable effort.

"My mood is the same after we lose: I'm disappointed, frustrated, takes time to get out of that way of thinking. I will look back positively on this game, there was so much to take from it.

"Halfway through the season we weren't in a great position. We worked hard to get here. It's an incredibly tight race. We have one more game to execute what we need.

"We love playing at home. It's a really great atmosphere. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves and make it too emotional.

"We know what we have to do, our home form has been strong. We've enjoyed playing there, there will be none bigger than this. The Newcastle fans will come out for us.

"You can label that at us we weren't ruthless, we didn't take the chances. It's not for a lack of trying. We were really strong mentally today. There was no hangover from the players."

On Isak's injury:

"I don't think this is a surgery issue. It's not something that needs mending. It is certain that is needs looking at as to why he gets these groin complaints. It's not a surgery issue, it's a 'what we need to strengthen that area' issue."

"It's a difficult one to go too deep into. The standard with him missing is so strong. We looked very good in every phase in that first half. The final action, he is better than anyone this season. He's been a brilliant finisher for us.

" Unfortunately for Callum
(Wilson), none fell to him. But it was a strong performance in his absence."

On whether Isak will face Everton:

"That's unknown. I don't know.

"He only felt pain after training, during training he was fine. It was stiffness and went to get a scan. Then it became clear he was not fit to play.

"A lot will depend how he reacts. He had a couple of groin issues either side, but this is one he felt earlier in the season."

Stats:

Eddie Howe's side ended their PL away campaign with eight victories on the road, one short of their best-ever total.

Emil Krafth was shown a yellow card just 29 seconds after arriving on the field as a substiute.

Old boys:
Sunset on Leith

Ex-Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle played his final game on Saturday, as his current club Hibernian drew 2-2 with Rangers at Easter Road in the Scottish Premiership.

The 35 year-old forward failed to add to his six goal tally for Hibs after appearing from the bench in the 57th minute.

Gayle has confirmed retirement and plans to become a player's agent.

Gayle's former SJP team-mate Jeff Hendrick has left Derby County after his short-term deal at the Championship club expired.

The 33 year-old midfielder rejoined the Rams in March but failed to make a single appearance for them.

And Paul Dummett's time at Carlisle United is over, the 33 year-old defender departing after failing to help the Cumbrians avoid relegation to the National League in his brief time at Brunton Park.

Paul Huntington has the opportunity to prolong his stay at Bradford City however, the 37 year-old now out of contract at Valley Parade but invited to pre-season training as the Bantams move up to League One.

PS: A trio of former Magpie goalkeepers playing in the Championship are all set to become free agents, with Tim Krul confirmed as leaving Luton Town, Freddie Woodman exiting Preston North End and formal confirmation of Jak Alnwick's fate at Cardiff City awaited.

Update:

18th May

Born Or Died:

1958 Howard Gayle born, Toxteth, Liverpool. (1982-83)

An injury to Kevin Keegan in November 1982 prompted United to enter the loan market for Liverpool reserve midfielder Gayle.

First sighted in a midweek home friendly against Dynamo Kiev, Gayle then debuted in a 2-0 victory over Cambridge United at SJP the following Saturday.

Showing flashes of good form, Gayle's month-long loan was then extended and he found the net in successive games against Derby County and Grimsby Town over the festive period.

The return of Keegan to the side then saw Howard return to Anfield, where he'd been on the books since 1974 but played only five first team games for the Reds.

That had included a European Cup semi final against Bayern Munich when he came on for the injured Kenny Dalglish and tormented the Germans with his pace.

The 1979/80 season saw him on loan at Fulham and he departed from Liverpool in the summer of 1983, joining Birmingham.

Moving on to the mackems in 1984, Howard was dismissed on his return to SJP with the red and whites on on New Years Day 1985.

Later transfers took him to the Dallas Sidekicks (USA) and Stoke City, before signing for Blackburn Rovers in 1987.

Six seasons at Ewood Park included a rare run of goalscoring in 1988/89, when he managed a career best total of nineteen.

Following Gayle's departure in 1992, he played for Halifax Town and Accrington Stanley before hanging up his boots.

The former England U21 international then returned to his native Toxteth and became involved as a coach at the Stanley House Youth Football Club.

2016 saw Gayle's autobiography "61 minutes in Munich" published - an unflinching account of his life and career.

That same year he hit the headlines after refusing a nomination for an MBE in the Queen's Honours List due to the suffering of his forefathers during the British Empire.

As part of his work for the Show Racism the Red Card initiative, Howard said of his playing career that:

"When I played for Newcastle & sunderland, the fans were great, both on and off the pitch. But when I was an opposition player at St. James’s Park, I was spat at, there were monkey noises, and all sorts of racist abuse.

"It wasn’t pleasant, but sadly it was something I had become used to. "

1968 Jeff Wrightson born, Walker.
(1985-87)

A graduate of Wallsend Boys Club, Jeff was part of Newcastle's 1985 FA Youth Cup -winning side along with the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Ian Bogie and Kevin Scott.

A senior debut came at SJP on Boxing Day 1986 in place of the absent David McCreery. Unfortunately that was a 0-4 beating by Everton and United also lost the other three games that season Jeff played in.

After the Everton game, boss Willie McFaul admitted that Jeff wasn't ready for the first team and that his selection had been a mistake. Hardly a confidence booster...

Released in the summer of 1987, former Magpie John McGrath recruited Jeff for Preston North End, where his team mates included Sam Allardyce. Ian Bogie would later follow him to Deepdale.

During five years there, Wrightson scored from the halfway line in a League Cup tie at Scarborough and endured an FA Cup giant-killing by Whitley Bay (although he didn't feature at Hillheads).

Following trials at Yeovil Town, Blackpool & Darlington, Jeff signed for Gateshead in 1992, making over 200 appearances in a five year period for the Tynesiders.

After later spells at Spennymoor United, Blyth Spartans and Walker Central, Jeff began coaching under Central boss and former PNE colleague, Ian Bogie.

The duo then joined Gateshead in April 2007, guiding them to successive promotions and a place in the Conference.

Jeff confirmed his departure due to his work commitments at a furniture company in 2010, the Tynesiders having opted to go full-time from the following season.

Jeff's son Kieran followed in his father's footsteps, appearing at academy and reserve level for Newcastle between 2006 and 2009.

Later joining Gateshead, he played for various local non-league sides, winning the FA Vase with North Shields in 2015.

1978 Death of Norman Smith, 80. Former manager Smith collapsed after visiting SJP.

The first of four friendlies against the "All Whites" saw United visit the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium in Christchurch.

In goal for the home side was one Richard Wilson, who presumably "didn't believe it" when John Anderson put the Magpies ahead from Paul Gascoigne's centre.

Injuries to George Reilly and Tony Cunningham meant that Neil McDonald was pushed into a forward role and struck what proved to be the winner from fully 30 yards out.

Team: Thomas, Anderson, Clarke, Roeder, Wharton (Saunders), McCreery, Heard (Brown), Haddock, Gascoigne, McDonald, Beardsley.

The first of United's two end
-of-season games in the West Indies saw them play at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Team: Given, Barton (G.Caldwell 49), Griffin, McClen, Caldwell S, Howey (Goma 46), Lee (Kerr 70),  Gavilan, Gallacher, Robinson (Green 70), Solano.
Subs n/u:
Domi, Simon Smith.

2006 Nobby Solano followed in the footsteps of fellow Magpies Nicos Dabizas, Andy Griffin and Stuart Pearce by emerging relatively unscathed from a serious car crash.

Nobby was taken to hospital in Lima, but only suffered a minor injury to the part of his body least used on the pitch - his forehead.

He blamed himself and jet-lag for the accident when he said afterwards:

"Thank God I'm fine. It was because of driving fast. I hit the pavement and lost control of the car. I think I've felt the time changing between England and Peru."

2022 On-loan midfielder Matty Longstaff was an unused substitute as Mansfield Town beat Northampton Town to seal a place in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

The Stags would face Port Vale after they defeated Swindon Town in their semi-final.

United were just one win away from securing Champions League qualification after beating one of their rivals for a top four finish at SJP.

However, two late goals made the scoreline look deceptively comfortable after a nervy evening on Tyneside.
