Stuart Boam RIP

We're sad to report that former Newcastle central defender
Stuart Boam has died at the age of 77.
Nottinghamshire-born Stuart began his career at Mansfield Town
before making £50K move to a Middlesbrough side managed by Stan
Anderson during 1971.
Appointed club Captain by Jack Charlton, he played over 500 times
for the Ayresome Park club before a transfer to the Magpies in
August 1979.
Making the first of 77 league and cup appearances in a 2-1 home win
over Chelsea, the first of his two Toon goals came soon after, in a
home League Cup tie against the mackems that was infamously settled
on penalties.
Stuart's final game was a 0-0 draw at Oldham Athletic in February
1981 and he returned to Mansfield that summer, later having a brief
period with Hartlepool United.
He would have a further involvement with United during the Jim Smith
era, carry out some scouting missions.

U18s:
Wide boys wing it
Newcastle U18s 3 Everton U18s
1
United's U18s rose to third in the table on Saturday, thanks a
deserved victory over Everton that ended a run of three successive
losses at this level to the Merseyside Blues.
The visitors were fortunate to escape a third minute attack that
ended with goalkeeper Douglass Lukjanciks clearing an effort from
his defender Lewis Evans from behind the line - something that the
match officials didn't spot.
Newcastle's opening goal wasn't long in arriving though; a neat
exchange of passes between right winger Mo Waddani and Matty Taylor
on the edge of the box setting up the former to convert with a low
shot in the ninth minute.
Magpies captain Jude Cogdon shot against the goal frame midway
through the opening half before Waddani tried to repay the
compliment by playing Taylor in - only for the visiting goalkeeper
to palm the shot away for a corner.
United's left winger Matheos Ferreira doubled the lead four minutes
after the interval before Alex O'Donovan added a third just after
the hour following a scramble in the box.
The Toffees did reduce the arrears on 71 minutes when Kean Wren
swept home a first-time effort from Shea Pita's right wing centre,
but the destination of the points was never in doubt and United
missed a couple of late half-chances to improve their goal
difference.
Team: Dowell, Bloomer, Durrant, Moran, Old, Cogdon, Waddani
(Patterson 87), M.Taylor (Lucas 80), Hutchison (Pinnington 73),
O'Donovan, Ferreira (Seldon 73).

Youngsters advance
Newcastle U17s have progressed to the knockout stages of this season's
Premier League Cup,
with three wins from as many games seeing them win their group.
This is the second successive season that Newcastle have reached the
last eight of this competition, exiting at the hands of Manchester
United in 2024.
Also in the quarter finals are Blackburn Rovers, Crystal Palace, Leicester
City, Liverpool, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham.
News of the draw is awaited.
Old boy :
Defender sighted
Former Newcastle defender Jamal
Lewis is back in the game, signing a short-term contract at
Championship side Preston North End.
The 27 year-old became a free agent last summer when his Magpies
contract expired, having not played since his loan spell at
Brazilians Sao Paulo ended in November 2024.
Saturday saw him appear from the bench in the closing stages of
North End's 2-0 victory at Southampton.
Internationals:
Toon Teens in action
England and Scotland U17s are currently in European Championship
qualifying action in Scotland, both sides playing their second game
on Friday.
With Newcastle's George Mair in goal and midfielder Sam
Alabi captaining the side, the young Lions lost 0-1 to Lithuania
at Cumbernauld.
Scotland and Magpies defender Oliver Goodbrand then led the
Scotland side beaten 0-2 by Sweden at Airdrie a short time later,
collecting a booking for his troubles.
Tuesday afternoon had seen England
and Scotland meet at Airdrie, the Scots winning that 1-0 with all
three young Magpies starting for their respective sides.
The third and final set of games on Monday saw England beaten 5-3 by
Sweden, with Mair remaining on the bench and Alabi introduced in the
closing moments.
The Young Lions now cannot qualify for next year's finals, dropping
into a phase of the competition that decides promotion and
relegation for the next U19 Euros.
Meanwhile, Scotland defeated
Lithuania 4-1 with Oliver appearing from the bench with the scoring
complete - a result that sees them advance to the next stage of
qualification for the finals in Estonia next May.
Elsewhere, United's Lesecond Yeutembip is with England U16s
at the Football Federations Cup in Antalya.
The 15 year-old defender was in the starting line-up for their
opener on Thursday, England defeating Wales 5-1.
Saturday then saw England beaten 2-3 by host nationa Turkey, with
Yeutembip starting on the bench.
The U16s round off their games against Portugal
on Tuesday. The borrowers:

staged, as follows:

from the competition back in 1933 and belatedly returned in 1983.
The Senior Cup Final will be played at SJP once again.
Book:
Belfast boy
Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill
McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.
The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons,
winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines
worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.
Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in
managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to
Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.
Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are
gone.
2025/26 PL away tickets remain at 30.

Born Or Died:
1885 Alexander Higgins born, Kilmarnock, Scotland. (1905-19)
Commonly known as 'Sandy', United acquired the promising forward from his hometown club
at a cost of £250 in June 1905, his senior debut coming in a 3-1 home victory
over Aston Villa in March 1906.
Netting for the first time a month later against Blackburn Rovers, Higgins
continued his scoring touch in post-season friendly matches against Austrian
sides but made just one appearance the season after.
Playing a greater part in the 1907/08 campaign, it took until United's league
title winning season of 1908/09 for Sandy to become a regular, scoring five
times.
The following season saw him add an FA Cup winner's medal to his haul - playing
in both the final and final replay against Barnsley - and also earn a first
Scotland cap.
A beaten finalist against Bradford City in 1911 (which again took two games to
settle), Higgins remained part of the first team squad until 1915, his final
game a 0-1 loss at Notts County that April.
Joining the Durham Light Infantry, Sandy served in France during World War I
and guested for Hull City while home on leave.
Rejoining Kilmarnock in August 1919, Sandy returned to England with Nottingham Forest
a year later, later moving on to Norwich City after a spell as
player-manager of local side Jarrow.
December 1922 saw Higgins join Wallsend before moving to Switzerland as coach
of Berne three years later.
Settled on Tyneside again, his final club was Preston Colliery before opening a
grocers shop in Byker and becoming a publican.
Sandy passed away
in March 1939.
1958 Frans Koenen born, Waalwijk, Netherlands. (1980-81)

A Dutch U21 international and captain, left winger Frans came
to Tyneside from NEC Nijmegen but only arrived at SJP after a brief trial with
Oldham Athletic.
Appearing in a pre-season home friendly against Leeds United while also on
trial, a deal was done in time for Frans to made his debut in a 2-0 loss at
Sheffield Wednesday.
The only goal of his time in Toon then came in his fourth league outing - in a
2-1 home success over Luton Town.
By then though manager Bill McGarry had exited and Joe Harvey was in temporary
charge, before handing over to the incoming new boss, Arthur Cox.
A knee injury didn't help Koenen's chances of remaining at SJP and following
the emergence of Chris Waddle, he ended his first season in England by being
granted a free transfer.
Returning to the Netherlands with Vitesse Arnhem via a spell in Belgium, he
later played for and managed the GVVV in Veenendaal.
Frans also had spells in charge of amateur sides ARC, Bataven Germania and VV
Rood Wit before returning to coach GVVV in 2008.
Moving on to take charge of RKHVV in 2010, he remained involved in Dutch
football in later life with Venray and RKHVV once again.
1960 Gary Nicholson born, Hexham.
(1977-81)
Left winger who marked his 18th birthday by scoring twice for
United in a 6-2 win over New Hartley in the FA Youth Cup.
Within weeks he'd broken through to the first team, scoring twice at SJP in a
reserve win over Bolton, returning there the following week for his senior
debut in a 1-0 victory over Cambridge United.
In retrospect, Gary's chances at United took a nosedive when Arthur Cox took
over in 1980 and a certain left winger named Chris Waddle came to prominence.
Gary joined Mansfield Town in a £25K transfer at the start of the 1981/82
season and later appeared for both York City & Halifax Town.
Moving into non-league with Blyth Spartans in 1987, he also played for Whitley
Bay, North Shields, Guiseley, Gateshead, RTM Newcastle and Lemington Labour
Club.

Newcastle's maiden visit to Anfield was an unhappy one; newspaper reports
claiming that their players reacted badly to falling behind and "showed signs
of roughness."
The hosts were ahead thanks to an
early Jimmy Stott free kick but United's Willie Thompson quickly levelled from
close in.
Liverpool then pulled ahead; Thomas Bradshaw and Douglas Dick both marking
their home debuts with their first goals.

After scoring a hat-trick during a 4-2 home victory over Blackpool a week
earlier, George Robledo repeated the feat at Anfield in a sensational six minute
spell.
However, it wasn't all one-way traffic, with The Journal observing that
the visitors "opened like sleepwalkers and were all but pulverised for
half-an-hour."
1953
A Wednesday afternoon game at SJP saw an FA XI defeat their
British Army counterparts 3-1 in front of a crowd of 15,360.
Mel Charles (brother of John) opened the scoring on 70 minutes for the Army -
who were the nominal home side.
FA captain Jackie Milburn then struck on 79 and 80 minutes, before Burnley's
Bill Holden made it 3-1 to the FA a minute later. Future Magpie Stan Anderson
played for the FA.
1959 United striker Ivor Allchurch

An unforgettable place for Ian Mitchell to make his bow, on a bumpy pitch in
the Hungarian town of Pecs. After levelling the tie on aggregate and holding on
through extra time, Pecsi triumphed in a penalty shootout.
United missed their first three (Pop Robson, Mitchell, Tommy Gibb) while Iam McFaul
failed to stop any of the trio he faced.
As the stunned United team returned to the dressing room, they
were made to send out two more penalty takers, Fairs Cup rules demanding all
ten kicks be taken regardless of outcome.
Pecsi duly scored their last two and volunteers Frank Clark and McFaul did
likewise.

Tommy Wright was unable to continue for United after the break and in these
pre-sub 'keeper days, Kevin Brock deputised.
The midfielder somehow kept a clean sheet despite a kick in the head from
David Speedie early on - regular doses of smelling salts keeping
him awake.
Former Chairman Stan Seymour was later confirmed to have passed away at the team
hotel later that night, at the age of 76.

Having broken his Newcastle duck in the first

point-blank range.
Nobby Solano then provided the bullets for Duncan Ferguson and Gary Speed to

Ahead when Shola drove home at the second attempt after the ball bounced back
off Gareth Southgate, referee Graham Barber then ruled out what would have been
Shearer's 100th United goal for a dubious earlier infringement.
The clincher came from Steve Caldwell on his first senior start since March
2001, conceded by Bobby Robson to be "fifth choice defender."
To add to the hilarity, smoggie Frank Queudrue was red-carded in the
final seconds, in his first game since returning from a ban... after being

The
roller-coaster ride of supporting this club was evidenced again, as the high of
Palermo was followed swiftly by one of our lowest lows,
less than 48 hours later.
Losing at home to a side without a win or away goal all season to leave us second bottom of the
table was beyond belief, Newcastle's greed in taking TV loot outweighing mere trifles like the fitness and recovery of players.
Pocketing cash for this Saturday night game risked our top-flight future and
backfired when post-match protests outside SJP for the first time included anti-Shepherd
shouts.
That would ultimately precipitate a blame- shifting
exercise on to boss Glenn Roeder, who paid with his job the following May.
