Premier League:
Gordon, Ramsey:
Cockerel nightmares

Spurs  1  Newcastle  2

Who shot? JR!

A goal in each half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday was enough to end Newcastle's four game winless league run and increase the pressure on beleaguered home boss Thomas Frank, whose turn it was to be booed off.

Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey struck either side of Archie Gray's leveller to propel United back into the top half of the table on a biblically wet night in North London, when the outcome outweighed any stylistic considerations.

The consequences of failing to beat an injury-hit Spurs side with a dreadful home record may not have been fatal for Eddie Howe, but collecting three points was a massive relief on the field, in the stands - and on the bench.

That release of pressure was evident post-match as the victorious Magpies saluted their supporters, Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes pushing the clearly delighted manager forward to give clenched fist salutes and punch the air.

Newcastle had never failed to score in their previous six visits here and looked odds-on to extend that run almost from the off, taking a stranglehold on the game against opposition who provided no threat and little defence.

With strike trio Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa and William Osula all benched, a front three of Harvey Barnes, Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga continually pressed Spurs back towards their own goal and won a series of corner kicks.

Despite all of that pressure though and the lack of interest Spurs had in attacking - much to the annoyance of their support - United's failure to score began to echo their recent 0-0 draw at fellow strugglers Wolves.

The overdue breakthrough looked to come at the end of  the half when Joe Willock raced onto Ramsey's through ball and finished emphatically, only for a VAR call to spot that the scorer's forehead was marginally offside.

Once again we feel duty bound to point out that the film frame used by VAR is arbitrary - not "a matter of fact". Sports are filmed at 60fps (frames per second) so the one used for the ball leaving the passer's foot could be one of a dozen or so. Who decides and how can judgements of millimetres be based on it? Players run at speeds that mean they move at about 15cm per frame....

United weren't denied for long though; Willock sending over a delicious deep centre from the right in time added on and Thiaw's initial header blocked by
Guglielmo Vicario but running free for the United defender to bundle the ball in.

A slightly improved home display after the interval was rewarded by Gray's 64th minute leveller from close range after a corner from the left was nodded back across the Newcastle six yard box by Matar Sarr.

Parity lasted less than five minutes however, before Gordon
did well to tee up Ramsey for a smart first-time shot that
he raucously celebrated in front of the away fans - a tangible reward for a greatly improved performance.

The margin of victory should have really been greater: Sven Botman, Barnes, Willock and Ramsey all going close or seeing efforts saved and blocked.

However the visitors maintained their one goal advantage, helped by a persistently wooden home display that rarely pressurised Nick Pope in his 100th United league game.

Hobbling and signalling to come off, Bruno then appeared to change his mind and two other substitutions were made before he limped out of the action after having collected a booking and what looked like a thigh or hamstring pull.

The three points took United up to tenth in the table, while the Cockerels slid towards the relegation zone, just five points clear of West Ham who were seconds away from beating Manchester United before a late leveller.

Full match report to follow.

Subs n/u: Kinsky, Byfield, Olusesi, Rowswell, Souza, Williams-Barnett.

Booked: Sarr, Spence, Simons.

Goal: Gray 64.

Crowd: Officially 59,773 in a 62,850 capacity venue that included a sold out and jubilant 3,000-strong away area.

After the match Eddie Howe said:

"I thought the players were all out on the pitch, we were getting cramp at the end. Our schedule has been relentless but I thought the performance was brilliant.

"It was a great finish from JJ (Jacob Ramsey). He's getting accustomed to the team. I thought Bruno's performance in the middle of the pitch was really strong.

"We've been waiting for that momentum shift for a long time this season. We just haven't strung it together long enough this season. It's going to be tough for the players but a great result today.

"I think in the moment that we were in, you have to take stock of everything.

"As I said after the press conference at Brentford, that wasn't an act. That was me being very real and very genuine in terms of how I felt.

"I said again that I've got to believe that I am the right person to be in the job with all the sacrifices that it entails. I've got to feel the players are playing for me.

"Today they showed that they are. But that has to be consistent moving forward.

"I think it's brought us closer together and it's reinforced relationships and made us all look inward. It made us all look at what we're doing and how we can do it better.

"This is a really tough job that we're doing. We're at the very highest level.

"You're constantly asked new questions. We're playing a game every three days. Sometimes that can feel like you can't breathe, you can't reset. You're being asked to play again and again.

"That's why we rotated the squad to a degree today to try and freshen a couple of players up so they can really find their top form. We need to try and have the ability to do that more if we can get a few players back from injury."

On Joe Willock's disallowed goal:

"I really felt for Joe because it was an outstanding finish. He ran himself into the ground for me."

On the Bruno Guimaraes injury:

"I'm not sure. He's a little bit worried. He said he’s not sure he's never had a problem with his hamstrings before, so is it cramp? was it a muscle problem?

"It probably feels more of an injury to me but let's wait and see. We'll try and stay positive at this moment."

On the issues integrating signings:

"I keep saying the lack of training is slowing their development, but they are beginning to feel at home in the team and once you feel part of it, and feel integral to how the team plays, you can only get better."

On the post-match reception:

"That was a special connection - I'm grateful it's still there."

Referee: Anthony Taylor - a second Toon posting of the season for the official from very near Manchester, after the 0-1 loss at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

VAR:
Nick Hopton - fine margins.

Stats:

Malick Thiaw
netted his fourth Premier League goal of the season, following a brace at Everton in November and one at home to Crystal Palace last month.

Jacob Ramsey
registered his maiden strike in our colours, becoming the 174th different scorer for the club in the PL - and the 64th to be born in England.

Nick Pope
made his 100th PL appearance for Newcastle.

United scored their 36th and 37th PL goals of the season, moving ahead of their lowest-ever seasonal total in that competition - 35 in the 1997/98 campaign.

Spurs and Newcastle have now had three competitive meetings this season: a 2-2 PL draw at SJP and a 2-0 victory on Tyneside in the Carabao Cup.

The two sides also met in pre-season, drawing 1-1 in a kickabout staged in the South Korean capital of Seoul.

United's 154th PL away win is the thirteenth to have come against Spurs - making them our most favoured opponent on the road in that competition. This latest success sees them move one clear of West Ham, where we've won 12 times.

Departure:
Lascelles
leaves

Update: Lascelles debuted for the Foxes on Saturday, completing 71 minutes of a 1-2 Championship defeat at Birmingham City.

Tuesday brought confirmation that long-serving central defender Jamaal Lascelles had left Newcastle, joining Championship side Leicester City for the remainder of the season, at which point he'll become a free agent.

The 32 year-old made the last of 253 appearances against Arsenal in September, having moved to Tyneside from Nottingham Forest in August 2014 alongside Karl Darlow, the pair immediately returning to the City Ground on loan.

Inheriting the number 6 shirt from Mike Williamson, Jamaal debuted in the League Cup against Northampton Town in August 2015, before a harsh introduction to the Premier League coming off the bench to partner Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba in a 1-6 loss at Manchester City,

The replacement of Steve McClaren by Rafa Benitez failed to prevent relegation but was pivotal for Lascelles, who became a regular starter and was made club captain.

One season in the second tier ended in spectacular style with Jamaal holding the Championship trophy following a home win over Barnsley and Brighton's draw at Villa.

Losing his place for the Premier League opener as Benitez partnered Ciaran Clark with Florian Lejeune, Paul Dummett almost immediately limped off and Lascelles was back in.

Winning goals in successive games against Swansea City and Stoke City were followed by news of a contract extension and what became an effective pairing with Fabian Schar.

Retaining the captaincy after Benitez gave way to Steve Bruce, Lascelles remained a regular until the installation of Eddie Howe and later acquisitions of Dan Burn and Sven Botman saw him slip down the pecking order.

An unused substitute at Wembley in the 2023 Carabao Cup Final, Jamaal found his way back into the side again as Botman succumbed to injury and Burn played at full back - starting all but one of United's six Champions League ties and giving one of his standout displays away to PSG.

Suffering a cruciate injury during a 4-3 home victory over West Ham in March 2024, Lascelles was sidelined for over a year before returning to action with a pair of substitute outings in the early weeks of this season, by which time Malick Thiaw was through the door.

His absence from the playing squad though didn't prevent Jamaal from lifting the Carabao Cup with fellow captains Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier last year - a fitting gesture to acknowledge his long service to the cause.

On This Day in History
10th February

Born Or Died:

1880 Albert Gosnell born, Colchester.
(1904-10 player, 1919-21 trainer)

Gosnell was signed from Chatham and debuted in a 3-0 home victory over Middlesbrough in November 1904, inheriting the winger's shirt from Bobby Templeton.

Netting his first goal two weeks later against Bury at SJP, Albert was a regular starter in both the 1905 & 1907 Championship-winning sides - also playing in United's FA Cup Final losses at Crystal Palace in 1905 & 1906.

Winning a single England cap in 1908, what proved to be Gosnell's final outing for Newcastle was a 3-4 home defeat by Manchester United in February 1910.

Moving on to Spurs, Albert later featured both for Darlington and Port Vale, before making a return to Newcastle during 1919 as an assistant trainer.

Leaving SJP for the second time in 1921 when appointed Norwich City Manager, Gosnell subsequently worked as Colchester Town trainer and became a licensee in Norwich. He died in January 1972.

1903 Edmund "Eli" Wood born, Stirchley, Birmingham. (1928-30)

Having played for Redditch, Northampton Town and Birmingham City, United paid £750 to sign Ed from Rhyl Athletic in 1928.

However, the centre half had an inauspicious debut in defence in a 2-7 home defeat at the hands of Burnley in August 1928.

After two further first team appearances, Wood found himself replaced when United turned to Burnley's Jack Hill.

Featuring only occasionally from that point onwards, Eli's final senior game came in a 1-1 home draw with Birmingham in April 1930.

He later returned for a third spell with Rhyl after appearing for Wellington Town and Runcorn.

Becoming a fireman in Northampton after hanging up his boots, Wood's death was recorded there during June 1986.

1950 Keith Dyson born, Blackhill, Durham.
(1967-71)

Striker who came through the youth setup at Gallowgate and signed his first professional contract in August 1968.

Making his
senior team debut in a 2-2 home draw with Spurs the following month, Keith's first goal came in his third game - against Nottingham Forest at Meadow Lane (The City Ground was closed due to fire damage).

That season also saw Dyson
make four appearances in the Fairs Cup campaign, while he netted against both Dundee United and Anderlecht as we attempted to defend our European crown in 1969/70.

Keith departed for Blackpool in October 1971, after Seasiders boss Bob Stokoe insisted on him being part of the deal that took Tony Green from Bloomfield Road to Tyneside.

Forced into retirement with knee problems in 1976, Dyson was awarded a testimonial against Stoke City in December of that year.

He made a comeback some three years later with Lancaster City, also serving as their manager
- joined there by his former Tangerine colleague, Alan Suddick

Keith later lived in Slaley.

1945 David Elliott born, Tantobie, Durham. (1966-71)

Midfielder signed from the mackems at a cost of £10,000, having come through the ranks at Roker Park - although he had begun his career with Gateshead.

Arriving at SJP, along with fellow new boys John McNamee and Tommy Robson, Dave
made his debut on the last day of 1966
with United rock bottom of Division One.

That game ended in a 0-4 loss to Spurs at White Hart Lane, but his efforts helped United to maintain top flight status.

Making three appearances in the successful 1968/69 Fairs Cup campaign (and one the following season), Dave's final outing in a Newcastle shirt came at home to Ipswich Town in November 1970.

Moving on to Southend United the following January, he had spells as player-manager of Newport County and Bangor City (twice) - leading the latter to the 1984 FA Trophy final at Wembley Stadium (where they drew 1-1 before losing a replay to Northwich Victoria).

Elliott then coached at Cardiff City and took charge of Caernarfon Town. His self-named sports shop can still be found on the main street in Bangor, North Wales.

1964 Michael Dudley Hooper born, Bristol.
(1993-96)

Signed from Liverpool for £550K to replace the departed Tommy Wright, Mike took over as our first-choice goalkeeper initially, but a number of errors saw Pavel Srnicek return.

Kevin Keegan took issue with the stick that Hooper took from some sections of the SJP crowd, even threatening to resign over it.

However, he also sought to augment his goalkeeper options, firstly with a move for Brad Friedel that stalled over work permit problems and then by signing Shaka Hislop.

Hooper went on loan to the mackems in the 1995/96 but never played a game for them.

Never conforming to the stereotype of footballers, Hooper holds an English Language Degree and is a self-confessed 'twitcher'.

Refusing requests for interviews since his retirement in 1996, Hooper reportedly worked as a Bettaware salesman and pub doorman in the Durham City area.

One post-match incident involving Hoops is recalled here.

1994 Miguel Almiron born, Asuncion, Paraguay. (2019-25)

Arriving for a then-record transfer fee claimed to be £20.7m on the final day of the January 2019 window, "Miggy" had built his reputation in two seasons in the USA at Atlanta United that included a MLS Cup success.

The Paraguayan international winger/forward was the second player from that country to join United, after fellow Asuncion native Diego Gavilan in 2000.

Beginning his playing career at Cerro Porteno, Almiron left Paraguay in 2015 for Argentinean side Atletico Lanus, helping them to clinch the Premera Division.

Although not finding the net in England, Miggy's initial impact was tangible and his popularity on Tyneside was almost instant.

Part of a front trio with Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon, they helped United to 21 points from the last 13 games, comfortably avoiding relegation.

However, under Steve Bruce, the pressure of not scoring seemed to affect his game until breaking his duck at the 27th time of asking with a late winner at home to Crystal Palace before Christmas.

Three goals in as many games - one in each of the Rochdale FA Cup ties and one at Wolves - put Miggy one behind top scorer Jonjo Shelvey and he ended the season in pole position with eight.

Five more followed before his 27th birthday with a memorable match-winning brace against Southampton - United finishing an epic 3-2 victory with nine men.

Miggy's start to the 2022/23 season was remarkable, finding the net nine times and receiving numerous awards for his goals and performances as United made it into the top four and then the final of the League Cup.

There were strong rumours of a move to Saudi side Al-Shabab FC in the January 2024 transfer window but he remained on Tyneside.

However, he left the club in January 2025 and re-joined Atlanta in the MLS for a reported fee of around £11m.

1997 Adam Armstrong born, Newcastle. (2012-18)

Involved with the Magpies since the age of nine, striker Adam made his U18 debut in a 0-4 home loss to Spurs in August 2012.

Netting the following week in a 1-2 defeat at Southampton, within a month he'd made an international bow for England U16s.

Scoring six goals in his first U18 season the next season saw promotion to United's U21 squad and a goal in each of his first three league outings.

For England he was also prolific, with seven goals in just five U17 games - although he was denied one other cap when called into Newcastle's first team squad for the League Cup tie at Morecambe in August 2013.

He failed to make the bench that night, but was named among the substitutes in the Premier League for the first time at Norwich City the following January.

That followed further goal feats: a brace in the Youth Cup at Barnsley, two against the mackems and two in the U21 Cup against Leicester City helping to 20 for the season.

Celebrating his 17th birthday with his first professional contract at United, just a month later Adam experienced a memorable week culminating in a senior club debut.

Collecting the Wor Jackie trophy at the Sport Newcastle awards, he scored against Chelsea at SJP in the FA Youth Cup 24 hours later and was picked by England U17s.

Armstrong came off the bench in the closing stages of a 0-1 defeat by Fulham at Craven Cottage in March 2014, becoming the club's youngest-ever player in the Premier League in the process.

After three more subs outings that season, Adam was on the plane for United's pre-season trip to New Zealand and netted against Australians Sydney in Dunedin.

A first competitive senior start then came in a 3-2 League Cup victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in September 2014.

Leaving SJP in July 2015 on a six month loan to League One Coventry City, a fine scoring of 13 goals saw his loan extended.

Notching a 34 minute hat-trick at Crewe in the opening game of 2016, Arma managed 20 goals in 40 Sky Blue outings but after a pair of substitute appearances for Newcastle in the Championship was loaned to Barnsley.

That proved less productive with just six goals in 35 games for the League One Tykes, although his season ended on a high note as an England U20 World Cup winner.

The 2017/18 campaign saw a half season switch to second tier Bolton Wanderers, where he hit three goals in 23 games.

A resurgence followed a loan to Blackburn Rovers in January 2018, a reunion with ex-Coventry boss Tony Mowbray bringing nine goals and Championship promotion.

Sold to Rovers for £1.75m in June as he debuted for England U21s, Adam faced Newcastle in the FA Cup the following January and inevitably scored - although United won the 3rd Round replay.

Remaining a regular scorer in the second tier - and in a race with fellow ex-Mag Ivan Toney for the Golden Boot in the 2020/21 season, speculation over a move to the Premier League coincided with his 24th birthday.

He lost out to Toney for the Golden Boot but earned a transfer to Southampton in August 2021, reported for around £15m.

Armstrong faced his old club in the two-legged League Cup semi-final in 2023 and looked to have equalised in the first leg at St. Mary's before VAR ruled it out for handball.

He remained with the Saints after they tumbled into the Championship at the end of the season and then helped them gain promotion.

Armstrong scored 24 goals in the 2023/24 season, including two in the play-off semi-final second leg against West Bromwich Albion and then the only goal of the game in the final at Wembley.

Reunited with former boss Mowbray when joining West Bromwich Albion on loan in January 2025, Adam scored on his debut in a 2-1 Championship home victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

He returned to Southampton and scored 11 more times for the Saints, including a purple patch of seven goals in six games before joining relegation-doomed Wolves in the Premier League in January 2026.

1979 The home game against Notts County was postponed, but the club anticipated the inclement weather and produced a one-sheet programme titled the "Frost Programme".

It opened with the following statement:

"You may have already read elsewhere that, because of the extremely adverse weather conditions we have decided not to produce your normal match day magazine for today's game.

"We have already lost two match programmes (Preston and Wrexham) and, frankly, the financial losses are such that we cannot afford to go ahead with colour printing and risk today's game being called off.

"So this special "Frost" programme comes to you with our compliments.....and the hope that not too many of you will suggest that we do this with every home game and put yours truly out of a job!  Editor."

Newcastle's debut at The Riverside Stadium didn't begin well, John Beresford turning Juninho's cross into his own net to give Boro a half time advantage.

Kevin Keegan brought on debutant Tino Asprilla in the 67th minute - the Colombian having famously flown that day in and enjoyed a glass of wine with his lunch.

Within six minutes, Tino had charged down the left wing, bamboozled the lumbering Steve Vickers and centred for Steve Watson to level.

Les Ferdinand then won it for United when goalkeeper Walsh fumbled an easy shot into the net. Commentating on local radio, Malcolm Allison was sacked after describing that goal using "industrial" language.

1999 United recorded a fine 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge in their FA Youth Cup Fourth Round replay, thanks to goals from David McMahon and Gary Caldwell.

2003 David Bellion netted to give the mackem reserves a 1-0 win at a dark, cold and windy Gateshead Stadium. Christian Bassedas was dismissed and goalkeeper Tony Caig made a second string bow.

A sodden SJP pitch survived two inspections, but our efforts looked to be in vain when old boy Craig Bellamy beat Steve Harper early on at the Gallowgate End.

However, the Welsh windbag spurned other chances and the Reds paid when Reina blasted a clearance against a team mate and Obafemi Martins nipped in to equalise.

The winner then arrived after Riise clipped Steven Taylor in the box, who sank like the Bismarck, with Nolberto Solano cracking home the resultant spot kick.

2010 The Reserves were in action at Sincil Bank in an afternoon kick-off and drew 2-2 with the Imps.

An inexplicable decision by the referee to kick off ten minutes early resulted in most of the small crowd missing Steven Lennon's opener.

United replied through Jonny Godsmark and Paddy McLaughlin but veteran Ian Pearce supplied a late equaliser for the home side.

Leicester City provided the opposition to Newcastle reserves for a second successive game on Tyneside, but this time it was the visitors who departed from Whitley Park with a thoroughly deserved 2-0 league victory.

2018 Newcastle's U18s secured the notable scalp of a victory over League leaders Manchester United, goals from Elias Sorensen and Mace Goodridge helping them to a 2-1 win at Little Benton.

2020 Flooding saw the U23s PL2 fixture against West Bromwich Albion moved from the Keys Park home of non-league side Hednesford Town, to Albion's Training Ground, near Walsall.

Amid driving rain and a hailstone blizzard a first half goal from Tom Allan won it for United.
