FA Cup:
Shadowplay

Newcastle  1  Manchester City  3

Having ended their interest in the Carabao Cup last month, a "weakened" Manchester City side removed Newcastle from the FA Cup at a deflated Gallowgate on Saturday night.

Despite retaining only Matheus Nunes from Wednesday's
Premier League starting line-up and going a goal down here, Pep Guardiola's side ran out convincing winners.

A lively opening from the hosts culminated in them taking an 18th minute lead when Harvey Barnes latched on to Sandro Tonali's incisive pass before firing beyond James Trafford.

However last season's beaten finalists came more into the tie and levelled six minutes before the break when Jeremy Doku's low ball from the left bounced in off Savinho.

With the scorer and Nunes tormenting the Magpies down City's right, United reached half time level but conceded a rerun of the first goal within two minutes of the restart - a Nunes pullback from the right finished by Omar Marmoush.

With the tie ebbing away from him, Eddie Howe attempted to rejig his ailing side but within moments of a treble change, Egyptian Marmoush struck from distance to end the tie as a contest and make it seven goals against us in five games.

There were no more goals, but with Newcastle barely able to get out of their own half, City could have scored more had they desired - despite Erling Haaland's absence.

After recent games where talking points and injustices both real and imagined have abounded, there was nothing controversial here tonight - we were simply outplayed.

The
Eddie v Pep record this season now reads: played five, lost four, won one. That seems like a fair reflection to us.

An FA Cup exit leaves the Magpies with an idle Easter and a break from club fixtures stretching almost three weeks - slightly longer if we're unable to get past Barcelona.

That antidote to our fixture congestion seems a long way away though, with four more blockbuster matches to follow within a fortnight before that ceasefire.

Tino Livramento's return after a 15 game absence was a bonus, but the collective ineffectiveness of messrs Elanga, Willock, Woltemade, Osula and Wissa was most concerning.

What Howe can do to alleviate that against Barcelona remains to be seen: Jacob Ramsey is available again and Anthony Gordon presumably resumes at centre forward.

After the glee of Wednesday though, reality returned on Saturday night against the blue half of Manchester.

Team: Ramsdale, Trippier (Burn 63), Hall (Livramento 80) Botman, Thiaw, Tonali, Willock, Woltemade (Gordon 72), Elanga (Joelinton 62), Barnes, Osula (Wissa 63).
Subs n/u: Pope, A.Murphy, J.Murphy, Neave

Goal: Barnes 18

Booked: Joelinton, Wissa

MCFC:
Trafford, Nunes, Ake, Stones, Khusanov, Gonzalez, O'Reilly, Savinho (Cherki 79), Doku (Foden 79), Reijnders, Marmoush (Semenyo 73).
Subs n/u: Donnarumma, Ait-Nouri, Guehi, Rodri, Bernado Silva, Dias.

Goals: Savinho 39, Marmoush 47,65

Booked: (Kolo Toure), (Guardiola)

Attendance:
51,109.

City were allocated 4,893 tickets but didn't sell them all.

Former Magpie/Citizen Joey Barton was in attendance.

Eddie Howe said:

"Good start from us, really good for half an hour. There's probably two things that happened. We couldn't sustain our start in terms of energy but they also played really well. We just have to accept that.

"I felt we maybe ran out of gas, certainly in the second half but also towards the end of the first half. You have to say they were a very good side. We needed the ball to try and generate pressure but we couldn't get enough of it.

"That was a tough learning lesson for us in that second half, we just didn't have the strength to make a dent in them.

"The way they play and how good they are technically, they took a stranglehold of the ball. When we got it back, we gave it away too easily, maybe looking too vertical and not horizontal enough at times.

"As soon as you make a technical mistake, you're not seeing the ball for long periods and then your energy just drains away. That's why they have been the best team for so long.

On Joelinton:

"Joelinton we did not want to start as he was to big an injury risk, so we were running out of options in there. We had to protect Joelinton today with past experience."

On Anthony Gordon:

"Anthony Gordon's come in with an ankle problem, we had to protect him today."

On Jacob Murphy:

"I couldn't use Jacob Murphy today because of a neck problem which he suffered yesterday and wanted to see how I felt in the warm-up to see if I could use him."

On his side's next game:

"In terms of trying to achieve something totally memorable, yes. All energy and focus now go to Tuesday.

"My focus is really short-term, and it's trying to win the game that is in front of me, and that is winning the game against Barcelona in the Champions League.

"As much as it is easy to be negative in this moment, and I understand we have gone out of the FA Cup, we have the biggest game in the club's history coming up in no time at all. We have no time to dwell on this."

"The supporters were incredible. That second half, when it was very difficult for us, they were still behind us and cheering for us. That typifies the crowd here. I was saying that I was walking around.

"This is an amazing football club and full of incredible people. We are going to need every single person who enters the stadium on Tuesday to try to make the difference for us.

"That is really now our season - it's in the hands of the next two games in the Champions League.

"We need to try and find some energy from somewhere that will elevate our performance to a level that we've not seen before this season because I think that's the only way we get through."

U18s:
Wooster wins it

Newcastle U18s  1  mackem U18s  0

Saturday saw United U18s avenge their 1-4 away derby loss with a single goal success in the return at Little Benton.

A 77th minute shot from Kacey Wooster divided the sides, the striker netting for a fourth successive game to reach double figures in all competitions this season.

The 17 year-old forward had spurned Newcastle's best two chances of the game, twice bearing down on goal only for visiting custodian Finn Robertson to block both efforts.

Wooster then opted to try and control a cross in the area midway through the second period, when the opportunity to test Robertson with a header looked to present itself.

However he made a decisive touch 13 minutes before full time, latching on to Ezra Tika-Lemba's cross from the right and finding the top corner of the mackem net.

The red and whites pressed for an equaliser but were denied by goalkeeper Roman Dowell and the goal frame, keeping out a corner kick in added time that was awarded by referee Jamie Cann after Dowell breached the eight second rule.

Team: Dowell, Tika-Lemba, Bloomer, Moran (Epia 46), Johnson, Cogdon, Pinnington, Callaghan (Hutchison 83), Wooster (Ndiweni 90+2), Gilligan (Morgan 69), Ferreira.

Unlike previous closures north of York, there don't look to be any direct services to and from Newcastle via Hartlepool.

+ The PL don't mention the Palace game would move from the Saturday - and be televised - were Palace in UEFA Conference League Quarter-final action on Thu 09.04.2026.

That's exactly what happened at short notice when Palace progressed to the last 16, with their PL home game versus Leeds pushed back 24 hours to Sun 15.03.2026 (2pm).

Whether Palace progress to the Quarter-Finals will be known after their last 16 second leg on Thu 19.03.2026.

(Were Newcastle to defeat Barcelona, the scheduling of their Champions League Quarter-final tie on Tue 14.04.2026 or Wed 15.04.2026 would also be a factor in when the Palace game is played. If both sides were still in Europe, we don't know how that situation would be resolved).

* The PL note that scheduling of the Arsenal game is still "Subject to participation in UEFA competitions and FA Cup."

Were Arsenal to win their FA Cup Quarter-final, United's visit to the Emirates would be postponed as the Gunners would be in Semi-final action at Wembley over that weekend.

We're not quite sure why the PL mention UEFA competitions for this game; a Saturday teatime slot not impinging on any potential involvement for either side in Champions League Semi-final slots on Tue 28.04.2026 or Wed 29.04.2026.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

On This Day in History
8th March

Born Or Died:

1884 James Brown Montgomerie Fleming born, Musselburgh, Scotland. (1911-13)

Signed from Edinburgh side St. Bernard's, centre forward Jim debuted in a 0-1 defeat at Spurs in November 1912 - three days after scoring twice for United in a friendly.

However he quickly exited Gallowgate in favour of Tottenham before later making a return to Scotland with Armadale.

Serving as a Major in the East Yorkshire Regiment during World War I, Jim died in action in August 1917. His headstone is at Dozingham Military Cemetery in Belgium.

1897 John Thomas Wilson born, Leadgate, Durham. (1919-20)

Centre forward who began his career with Leadgate St Ives, moving on from Leadgate United to join the Magpies in May 1919.

Making his senior bow in a 1-0 victory at Arsenal the following August, Jack netted twice against the Gunners at Gallowgate during a 3-1 success a week later.

Losing his place in the side after a 0-3 loss to West Bromwich Albion, Wilson was recalled for a three game stretch the following February but failed to add to his goal tally.

Twice sustaining a broken leg while at St.James' Park, Jack was released in 1920 and became Leadgate Park player-manager before joining Third Division North side Durham City in February 1922.

Proving his fitness, he was soon signed up by Stockport County and after converting to a half back was sold to Manchester United for £500 during September 1926.

Remaining at Old Trafford until 1932, Wilson ended his senior playing career in the colours of Bristol City at the age of 36.

Later returning to Leadgate, he was reported to be working in the licensed trade around Tynemouth during 1947.

1972 Georgios Georgiadis born, Kavala, Greece. (1998-99)

Midfielder who spent part of his childhood in Germany, but had returned to his native Greece when signing for Doxa Dramas.

1992 saw him join Panathinaikos, where won two league titles and was capped for the first time by his country in March 1993.

The summer of 1998 saw Kenny Dalglish bring him to Tyneside at a cost of £500K, three months after completing the signing of fellow Greek international, Nicos Dabizas.

However, while the defender settled well on Tyneside, "Gigi" made little impact, with the man who signed him quickly exiting and Ruud Gullit arriving in his place.

The Dutchman banished Georgiadis to the reserves until a belated first team debut in a 0-0 draw away at Manchester United in November 1998.

Appearing sporadically thereafter, the undoubted high point of Gigi's time at SJP came in an FA Cup Sixth Round win over Everton on the eve of his 27th birthday.

History records that he did come off the bench to score, but via a weak poke in the vague vicinity of the goal somehow ended up in it via Toffees defender Materazzi.

By the end of that same season though, Georgiadis was out of the first team picture and back in the reserves, his final Magpies contribution a goal in a Northumberland Senior Cup tie against Ponteland United.

Sold to PAOK Salonika that summer for £300K, he later moved on to Olympiakos and was selected for the Greek squad who won Euro 2004 - although like Dabizas, he was never called into action from the bench.

Injury prevented him facint United for Olympiakos in the UEFA Cup tie of 2005 and he joined Iraklis soon after.

Returning to PAOK, Gigi retired in 2008 and took up a scouting post with the club, later coaching the Greek U21 side before taking a post of PAOK Technical Director.

2013 saw him step in as interim boss of PAOK before Huub Stevens was appointed and he took a permanent managerial role at Greek side Veria in June 2015 but lasted barely seven months in charge.

Beginning the 2016/17 season at fellow Greeks Trikala, Gigi had gone by the following January. He returned to PAOK during January 2018 as a scout and later became their Academy Director.

1979 David Beharall born, Newcastle.
(1999-2002)

Central defender who came through our youth and reserve sides, debuting in place of an injured Steve Howey in a 1-3 home loss to Everton at in April 1999.

Unfortunately Beharall didn't have the best of bows; Kevin Campbell netting for the Toffees after just 42 seconds.

Three more Premiership appearances that season in our winless run to the FA Cup Final weren't enough to win Beharall a place on the bench in the 0-2 loss to Manchester United at Wembley.

However both he and fellow local new boy Jamie McClen signed new contracts at the end of the season - a move interpreted in some quarters as Ruud Gullit's attempt to buy support in a dressing room dominated by Alan Shearer and his pals, including the out of favour Robert Lee.

After appearing in pre-season, David found himself behind new arrivals Marcelino and Alain Goma, replacing the latter during a 3-3 draw with Wimbledon at SJP, but giving away a goal soon after arriving.

Omitted for the next game - the infamous 1-2 home derby loss in the monsoon - his last senior outing came when selected by caretaker manager Steve Clarke for Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

A 1-5 loss that saw fellow defender Nicos Dabizas dismissed couldn't be blamed on David - his arrival from the bench coming with United trailing 1-4.

Unselected by Bobby Robson, Beharall's next senior game came in the black and white shirts of Grimsby Town two years later - a trial at Preston North End earlier in the year having come to nothing.

After his four-month Blundell Park loan, a temporary spell at Oldham Athletic was followed a £150K switch in March 2002.

David saw that three year deal through and left Boundary Park on a free in 2005, joining Carlisle United for a season and helping them regain league status via a playoff victory over Stevenage Borough.

Next stop was Stockport County (after a trial with Port Vale), playing for a season before being released.

Retiring due to injury, Beharall remained in the Oldham area and became the MD of internet company Candid Sky.

David was particularly luckless at SJP, making the headlines on two occasions for the wrong reasons - accidentally colliding in training with Louis Saha and breaking the on-loan Frenchman's cheekbone.

He was equally innocent in a second tale, when near namesake and fellow reserve Terry Burghall made the tabloids for some off-field misadventures.

Unfortunately the story appeared with a photo of....Beharall.

PS: David also hit the headlines in 2003 when the victim of a so-called "carjacking" attack, losing his Mercedes when stopping to use a petrol station cash point.

1985 Neale McDermott born, Newcastle.
(2001-03)

An England youth international (playing alongside Wayne Rooney) and the son of Terry Mac, midfielder Neale featured at junior and reserve level for the Magpies.

However he left amid accusations that he and other youngsters were treated poorly by coaches Kenny Wharton and Peter Beardsley - although a club enquiry found in favour of the coaching duo, who stayed in post.

Signing for Fulham in early 2003, he failed to progress into the first team and was loaned at Swindon Town and Darlington.

Leaving Craven Cottage in 2006, McDermott was on trial at Dunfermline Athletic before training with Carlisle United, managed by his dad's former SJP colleague Neil McDonald.

Leaving Brunton Park in 2008, McDermott
later signed for Hartlepool United, Dundee, Grimsby Town, Wrexham, La Louviere (Belgium), Gateshead and Marsaxlokk (Malta) before retiring in 2010.

Working as a players' agent and part of the marketing team for Red Bull energy drink, McDermott later became head of youth scouting for Adidas and worked in marketing for Pitch International.

1990 Remy Cabella, born, Ajaccio, Corsica. (2014-16)

Having failed to secure his signature as a replacement for Yohan Cabaye during the January 2014 transfer window, United had more success attracting the Montpellier playmaker some six months later.

Cabella moved after three seasons in the Montpellier first team, with 14 goals in 37 League appearances helping them avoid relegation and earn him selection in the French World Cup squad - although he wasn't called into action in Brazil.

His first season for United was mixed, getting off to a slow start and often flattering to deceive some with fancy footwork but little end product.

Performances gradually improved though after the replacement of Alan Pardew by John Carver, a fine showing at Stamford Bridge in January 2015 looked to have kick-started his career in England.

After getting off the mark with a decent strike in a 3-0 success at Hull City though, Remy's inconsistency continued and he failed to finish on the winning side in any of his next ten appearances that season.

A thigh injury saw him miss pre-season under incoming manager Steve McClaren before a loan return to Marseille in August 2015 came as part of the deal that saw Florian Thauvin move the other way.

Belated confirmation came in July 2016 that the loan was then permanent - Cabella almost instantly joined at OM by Thauvin, returning on loan. Bonkers.

However, Cabella's second spell at the club went sour within a year and he made a season-long switch to fellow Ligue 1 side St.Etienne during August 2017.

By the following February he had been joined by another familiar face, former Magpie full back Mathieu Debuchy.

Remy's transfer was made permanent in August 2018 but less than a year later he joined Russian side FC Krasnodar, notably scoring against Chelsea in the Champions League group stages.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 saw Cabella's contract terminated and he signed a short-term deal with former side Montpellier.

His free agent status then saw him rejoin Lille ahead of the following season.

After four seasons with Lille he joined Olympiacos in May 2025 on a free transfer but after just ten appearances was loaned to Ligue 1 side Nantes in January 2026.

A header by Wyn Davies from a Dave Elliott cross put the visitors ahead at Parkhead and Jimmy Scott then followed suit from Jackie Sinclair's centre, before Jimmy Johnstone reduced the arrears.

Yet another Scot then came up with an assist, as Bob Moncur set up Tommy Robson to make it 3-1. Bobby Lennox then netted but Jock Stein's side couldn't find an equaliser in the final seconds of play.

From the city of Porto Alegre, the bulk of the Internacional squad represented Brazil at the 1974 World Cup, goalkeeper Manga was a veteran of the 1966 tournament and midfielder Falcao would star at the 1982 World Cup.

The visitors completed a clean sweep of seven tour wins without having conceded a goal.

As good as it ever got for Glenn Roeder - but this victory was the beginning of the end for his managerial reign at Gallowgate.

A scintillating first half performance saw United race into a three goal lead and at 4-1 well into the second half the tie looked over.

However a Steven Taylor handball gave AZ the chance to score and although Shay Given was equal to Mousa Dembele's spot kick, he couldn't block the rebound. We lost the second leg 0-2, won just one of the next eight league games and Roeder walked the plank.

Scott Parker accepted a plaque from UEFA before the game marking our crowning as Intertoto Cup winners - a title bestowed on the last surviving side in the UEFA Cup to qualify via the Intertoto route.

2009 Indisposed Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear predicted a return to the dugout in April against his old side, Spurs:

"I am feeling really good and am desperate to get back. I'm hoping I will return for the Spurs game."

Like most things that came out of his mouth, that proved to be false. However, a return to the SJP payroll would belatedly and bizarrely occur in 2013....

2012 An eventful Tyne-wear reserve derby ended 3-3, Gabriel Obertan, Dan Gosling and Ryan Donaldson on target.

2,995 fans were at SJP, teenage home fans causing proceedings to be halted when Sports Direct hoardings were hurled on to the pitch from the East Stand.
