aren’t going to get carried away because it's a pre-season game - but in terms
of the three weeks of work we’ve done, we have got to be unbelievably proud of
that performance from the lads with the buy-in and the fitness levels, the
work-rate, the discipline, the shape, everything about the performance.
"That’s what we are trying to create, that’s what we want to do and for
me, as a coach and manager, you want these results just to keep the momentum
going and keep the buy-in from the players. I was over the moon with them.
"It was such a hard game in terms of
the quality, the pace, the movement and for us, it was about the discipline,
staying in shape, controlling the distances between each other and then impress
when we can.
"It only works if every one is at it and if one isn’t at it, we get
caught out, but they were brilliant.”

Newcastle's first public pre-season
game saw them make the short trek to the International Stadium
on Saturday, facing a Gateshead side now managed by Lee Cattermole.
A poor game saw The Magpies salvage a draw thanks to an own goal in
the 79th minute after the Tynesiders had gone ahead in the 34th
minute.
Clad in the new blue away kit for the first time, a fairly strong starting
line-up captained by Jacob Murphy lacked pace and invention and
forward threat - hardly a shock, given the attackers yet to return
for pre-season.
Fabian Schar made his first appearance since returning to fitness
while Sean
Steur gave an assured performance in midfield, but overall it was an unmemorable contest.
Heed's opener came when Billy Chadwick's free-kick hit Newcastle's defensive wall and broke to New
Zealander Luke Supyk, who slotted the ball past Nick Pope from just
inside his six yard box.
United should have levelled after the break when Jacob Murphy looped
a cross from the right hand side of the area to the back post, where
Joe Willock connected with a header but failed to get sufficient
power or direction to steer it away from home custodian Adam Desbois.
An equaliser did follow however, when Alex Murphy found Lewis Hal
down the left and his pull backl deflected off the knee of Ben
Williams beyond the helpless Desbois in the goal at the north end.
Inevitably, most attention was focused on Eddie Howe's post-match
interview, responding to questions over the future of his Brazilian
captain with what amounted to a reprise of last year's comments
regarding Alexander Isak.
