We Said

Howe bows out on far left (thanks to Neal Smith)

Eddie Howe said:

"I thought it was a really good test for us. The scoreline’s a difficult one for us to take. I don’t think we deserved that at all today. I think anyone who watched the game would have seen that we were very competitive today. The goals we conceded were strange ones.

"The first one’s a long-range free kick. It was a good strike from their lad, I think it took a slight deflection on the way in. Second one, I think is a foul on Sven (
Botman). Third one, we made a mistake and got counter-attacked on, and the fourth one’s an own goal.

"So, I think they’ve had six shots in the game, they’ve scored four goals.

"The majority of the game I think we had control of with the ball. We probably didn’t do enough with it in terms of creativity and chances, although we certainly should have scored more than the one we got.

"Ideally, you don’t want to lose. I mean, I’m not saying that we’re happy to lose – we’re not. We wanted to win the game. But you do want a test – you don’t want the games to be too easy.

"We knew coming here with the squad that we have and the current state of their physical well-being, in terms of we haven’t trained for too long compared to a Championship team who no doubt will be a week to two weeks ahead of us. We knew it’d be very difficult.

"We felt we’d probably be strong enough to do better than we did in terms of scoreline, but I’m really pleased the players came through extended minutes. Fitness levels looked pretty good, and we’ll be better for the game.

"I actually thought it was a pretty strong performance, despite the fact that the goals we conceded were bizarre. Pre-season is to get out all the rustiness of the summer, to get the players to a position where, when the team faces Liverpool, they're ready.

"Every day that I'm Newcastle manager is a great day for me. I absolutely love the football club and that will never change."

On Bruno Guimaraes:

"Any distraction, if it's not healthy, is unhealthy.

"So, yes, it would be negative for things to drag on but we’re not in control of that. And to some degree, I don’t think Bruno's in control of that either.

"What will be, will be. We can't control the forces that are at play here, we've just got to make sure that when Bruno comes back, we look after him and he trains well, which I’m sure he will do. And he makes a difference as he always has done.

"We've spoken numerous times. Assurances? I don't think you can push too hard for those.

"I've said many times we want players who are committed and Bruno has always been committed. His training performances and his game performances have been outstanding, every time he's worn the shirt, he's played with the fans by his side. I'd love to see that continue.

"The details I don't actually know but I don’t see any reason why he wouldn't be back
(for training) on Friday.

"We want to keep all of our best players. They’re so valuable. I’ve said numerous times, there’s not many of them, so to get them and develop them, when you have them, you want to keep them. Bruno’s very much in that category, he’s an outstanding player.”

They Said

Michael Skubala said after his first home game in charge:

"For me, it's like any other pre-season game. Of course, its an amazing stadium, amazing fans that have come to watch some good goals, a really good outfit - show it shows what we can do against top, top teams - but like all other pre-season games, there's still stuff that we need to improve on.

"I thought the intensity in the team, the way we played fast and forward, the way that we got off the back of them, the way we looked a threat whenever we moved it through the structure and the patterns we wanted.

"I thought the transition moments were exciting, we looked like we could go and score in transition and there's stuff to work on still when we're a little bit lower and being a bit more solid.

"But saying that, I thought the centre-halves tonight putting their bodies on the line blocking shots, blocking goals was exceptional.

"There's always things to improve on and doing it against a top opposition like that shows our weaknesses.

"We've gone really strong in the first spurt, and then you can see tonight the cohesion as
(we're) trying to work out who best plays with who and what we need (in terms of more signings).

"It's like a jigsaw puzzle that we're trying to put together, but we still want to add to the group. We still think we can add to them and support them, so we're still working hard behind the scenes.

We've been really precise, and the recruitment has been excellent. You saw some of them for the first time tonight, but now it's about - in the sequence of what we want to do - get them right, the next ones."

PS:
City's trialist was reportedly Elijah Adebayo, who was a free agent following his release by Luton Town. Scouted by Newcastle in 2021, the striker scored for the Hatters at SJP during a 4-4 draw in February 2024 - one of ten Premier League goals that season.

Waffle

Newcastle's pre-season preparations went badly awry against Championship opposition at a sun-soaked Ashton Gate on Wednesday night, as a makeshift defence conceded four goals and suffered a further blow when Fabian Schar limped off.

The loss of Schar 20 minutes into the second game of his comeback from injury was a further blow on a night when United enjoyed extended periods of possession but again lacked a cutting edge.

In the absence of any new right back and with both Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley still yet to feature in pre-season, Jacob Murphy stepped in until Leo Shahar's arrival from the bench. Who'll be playing there against Liverpool is anyone's guess at this moment...

City goalkeeper Sam Tickle was twice tested in the early stages before the hosts went ahead on 25 minutes, Ewen Jaouen beaten by Sam Greenwood's free kick from just outside the box that went in off the underside of the bar.

Michael Skubala's side soon doubled their lead, when Lorent Tolaj got away with a blatant shove on Sven Botman outside the area, advancing on goal and beating Jaouen.

The Dutchman and his colleagues protested in vain, perhaps accustomed to the Premier League level of officialdom compared to tonight's less lenient performance from select group whistler Paul Tierney.

Jaouen made way for Nick Pope in United's only interval replacement, but within five minutes of the restart was retrieving the ball from his net after Max Bird got away from Botman and shot home.

Thoughts turned to the infamous 1-6 Leyton Orient loss in pre-season, but City failed to find further goals amidst a multitude of substitutions including one un-named trialist. It's worth mentioning that they simultaneously staged another kickabout, at Forest Green Rovers.

The black and whites did belatedly register a goal when Harvey Barnes converted a low shot from the edge of the area after good work from Matheos Ferreira and Jacob Ramsey, only for Botman to round off his miserable evening by volleying a cross from the City left into his own net.

The scoreline suggests an Avon culling, but in chances created the visitors were ahead; Anthony Elanga denied an obvious penalty just on half time and Sean Neave striking the goal frame early in the second half.

Aside the obvious fact that this was just a kickabout, that 2009 Leyton Orient reverse and a 0-4 shoeing at Braga in 2018 both came concerningly close to the start of the season - and with virtually all of the senior squads involved.

That isn't the case in 2026 with a significant chunk of players still to join pre-season, but concerns abound in all areas of the field, not just the Bruno Guimaraes saga.

The travelling support rightly raised their voices in praise of Kevin Keegan, but in terms of the current crop on show tonight, there wasn't much worth shouting about.

PS: Events took a rather unexpected turn barely 12 hours after the final whistle here, when news that Howe had relinquished his role at the club began to break. That development brought added significance to the following line in his post-match comments:

"Every day that I'm Newcastle manager is a great day for me.
I absolutely love the football club and that will never change."
