Matthias Jaissle saw his Newcastle side win for the first time as they beat Championship side West Bromwich Albion at home in the Carabao Cup Second Round on Wednesday.

They had to come from behind however, after Isaac Price had given the Baggies the lead from a free-kick that beat debutant goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from distance.

A debut goal from Bazoumana Toure then restored parity at the break before Harvey Barnes put United ahead - only for Albion to be given a route back into the tie via a dubious penalty award.

Within five minutes though - almost before the thought of a penalty shootout had formed - Barnes struck again to send his side through and preserve their unbeaten start to the season.

Both sides made six changes from their league fixtures the previous Sunday, Albion arriving after winning their opening two Championship games and with one eye on an early-season "six pointer" at Boro three days later - arguably of greater significance than tonight's free hit.

Despite those changes, the visitors looked solid and able to exploit (£50m Spanish-shaped) gap in central midfield that Liverpool had also identified here.

Bazoumana Toure then marked his bow with a maiden strike, equalising six minutes before the break with a close range shot at the Leazes End from Amar Dedic's centre.

A low-key debut for United's Ivorian ended with his replacement by Harvey Barnes at half time - and he immediately made his mark on the tie after the interval.

Barnes put his side ahead within three minutes, following up his own shot via a number of deflections that allowed him to race into the six yard box and hammer the ball home.

A trio of replacements included Yoane Wissa, who instantly posed a threat in stark contrast to Nick Woltemade, who started in the absence of the injured Will Osula but had precious little to show for his 90 minutes leading the line. Given the waywardness of his effort from 12 yards at the World Cup, it's also something of a relief that this tie didn't go to a shootout.

The ovation that Steur received as he departed meanwhile was an acknowledgement of the genuine promise that he shows in possession.

Having made three changes of their own to bring more regular senior players on, the Baggies found a 77th equaliser when Price got his second from the spot after a soft award for handball on Lewis Hall.

Hall then tried to atone for that by joining the attack to smash a shot off the upright, before Barnes centred and Wissa contrived to clear the crossbar from close range.

Parity lasted only four minutes though, until a flowing move ended with former Baggies loanee Barnes providing a precise low finish into the Gallowgate End net. Given that he took nine games last season to get off the mark and ended up scoring 16 times, two in two for Barnes is a good start for a team where the supply of goals isn't certain.

There was time for a few late half-scares and some further tomfoolery from the officials before the final whistle sounded - a home victory still not enough to quell the mass booing of Madley.

A change of coaching staff has also brought alterations to the post-match routine here: the cringe-worthy "Freed from Desire" jettisoned and replaced by Baccara's "Yes Sir, I can boogie." That's a nod to the Jaissle-flavoured chants to that tune audible at pre-season games and on social media.  

That then gave way to Joy Division's, "Love Will Tear Us Apart", prompting a rendition of the Barnes song - one of a diminishing number of matchday ditties that remain appropriate after the squad changes during this window. Friday's UEFA draws then saw the Milan one also disappear....

There was no evidence of a dressing room photo afterwards and no "enjoy the game" from the PA beforehand, but most folks seemed to go away happy taking the positives from this display.
